
Another four people rescued in Red Sea after Houthi attack on Greek cargo ship
Thursday's rescue brought the total number of those saved to 10, including eight Filipino crew, one Indian and another Greek security guard.
Four members of the 25-member crew, three Filipinos and one Russian, were killed in the Houthi attacks. Eleven people were still missing, six of whom are believed to have been kidnapped by the Houthis, maritime security sources told Reuters.
'We remain deeply concerned for the welfare of the crew members in the custody of the Houthis, as well as for those currently unaccounted for,' Ellie Shafik, the head of intelligence with UK-based maritime risk management company Vanguard Tech, said. 'Their safety and swift release must be a priority for all involved.'
The Eternity C was the second ship sank by the Houthis this week,breaking a May ceasefire with the US that was predicated on an end to attacks on vessels in the Red Sea. Houthi forces also sunk the Greek-owned Magic Seas on Sunday, with all the crew rescued.
The last time the Houthis attacked a merchant ship was in December 2024, coinciding with a Gaza ceasefire.
'We are now with grave concern seeing an escalation in the Red Sea with attacks on two commercial ships, with civilian loss of life and casualties, as well as the potential for environmental damage,' said Hans Grundberg, the UN special envoy to Yemen.
The US mission in Yemen accused the Houthis of kidnapping crew members and called for their release.
The Houthis first attacked the Eternity C on Monday with bombs, sea drones and rocket-propelled grenades fired from speed boats. Footage released by the Houthis showed a surface-to-surface missile being fired to the screams of 'death to Israel!' and a large cloud of black smoke billowing from the Eternity C.
The ship was attacked again on Tuesday night, forcing the crew to jump into the water, as Houthi skiffs circled the vessel.
On Wednesday, the Houthi military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, said that its navy had rescued members of the ship's crew, given them medical care and taken them to a 'safe location.' The Houthis had previously held the crew of another ship it attacked, the Galaxy Leader, for over a year.
The Houthis have said that their attacks are in solidarity with Palestinians and a means of pressuring Israel to stop the war in Gaza, which has killed more than 57,000 people over the last 21 months.
The Houthis have also regularly launched ballistic missiles at Israel, the vast majority of which have been intercepted by the country's missile defence system.
Early on Thursday morning, the Houthis said that they had attempted to hit Ben Gurion airport in Israel with a ballistic missile, which the Israeli military said they had intercepted.
The Houthis had threatened to resume maritime attacks on any Israeli-owned ships as the US considered firing missiles at Iran, which it eventually did on 22 June, striking three Iranian nuclear sites. The Iran-backed group then followed through on its threat by sinking the Greek-owned Magic Seas on Sunday and the Eternity C, neither of which were linked to Israel but the Houthis claimed were heading to ports in the country.
It was unclear how the US would respond to this week's attacks in the Red Sea, which not only interrupted months of calm in the area but also were the first time that seafarers were killed by the Houthis in over a year.
The Red Sea is a vital shipping route, carrying about a third of the world's total container traffic. By the end of 2024, traffic through the Red Sea had declined by about 75%, a result of the Houthi attacks on shipping vessels starting in November 2023, according to the World Bank.
The resumption of attacks caused anxiety among maritime merchants, with at least one Hong Kong flagged ship Blossom Glory listing its destination as 'NO ISRAEL US EU LINK' as it passed by Yemen on Tuesday, with other ships listing similar destination ports.

Trump says US will stick to 25% tariff on Japan, may have deal with India soon
WASHINGTON, July 16 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Wednesday the U.S. will probably "live by the letter" on tariffs with Japan and may have another trade deal coming up with India, following his announcement of an accord with Indonesia on Tuesday. "We have some pretty good deals to announce," Trump told reporters at the start of a meeting with Bahrain's Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa at the White House. He said he would also discuss trade issues with the Bahraini leader. "The big one really is going to be on the 150 countries that we're really not negotiating with, and they're smaller -- we don't do much business with." On July 7, Trump announced 25% tariffs on imports from Japan and South Korea, effective August 1. He also announced separate rates for a number of other countries. On Tuesday, he said letters would be going out soon to dozens of smaller countries notifying them their goods would face a tariff rate of over 10%. He said those smaller countries would receive a "notice of payment" with a uniform tariff rates for the whole group. The deal with Indonesia is among the handful struck so far by the Trump administration ahead of an August 1 deadline when duties on most U.S. imports are due to rise again. The European Union and Canada, meanwhile, are readying countermeasures if their talks with the U.S. fail to produce a deal. Trump has said he does not expect to reach a broader deal with Japan. Trump's trade moves have upended decades of negotiated reductions in global trade barriers. They have unsettled international financial markets and stoked worries about a new wave of inflation. Israel wants to show Syria it can strike without consequence
A couple of days into the rule of Syria's new president Ahmed Al-Sharaa, we were filming at one the prisons outside Damascus, when the familiar thud of airstrikes shook the ground. Familiar, because for the previous months we had seen and felt similar strikes in Lebanon as Israel sought to destroy Hezbollah. And we had seen them from afar in Gaza. The Syria strikes were said to be aimed at destroying munitions sites before they could pose a threat to Israel's security. Since then, there have been over 900 air or artillery strikes on Syrian territory. The Syrian response - two complaints to the United Nations. And yet today they found Damascus on Israel's hit list. However these strikes have a notable difference from the others. The issues between the Druze and Syrian forces are a domestic matter, they do not threaten Israel's security. Israel says its actions are to protect Syria's Druze minority, yet the reality is, however much it might wish to be, Israel is not the appointed arbiter nor enforcer of the Middle East. To strike in the centre of another capital, hitting close the presidential palace, the military headquarters and in front of live cameras, are the acts of a government which feels it can act with impunity. Israel, emboldened after almost two years of military action on its neighbours, clearly has no fear of significant penalty or response when it comes to striking a sovereign capital. The strikes, cloaked in the defence of the Druze, suggest more of a wish to exert control across the region and warn the Al-Sharaa government to keep its forces away from the border. It's also an effort to reaffirm Druze support domestically within Israel. But regionally it serves, again, as a warning as to Israel's sense of exemption from the norms and laws. Israel defends its actions in Gaza as destroying Hamas, in Lebanon as destroying Hezbollah, in Yemen as destroying the Houthis, in Iran as destroying their perceived nuclear threat. Syria does not pose any of those issues. Striking so close to the centre of its power is an attempt to deliver a calculated message that it can strike when and where it wishes, pretty much without consequence, should Syria step out of line. Even if the United States does succeed in de-escalating this situation quickly, Israel has made its point. However it may not have made the Druze any safer, nor its position in the region or indeed the region itself.
