Japanese Breakfast Play Tug of War With Time in ‘Picture Window' Video
Michelle Zauner turned a lifelong rumination on loss into a cinematic capsule in Japanese Breakfast's 'Picture Window' music video. 'I wanted this video to feel like a short film,' the musician shared about the visual, which stars Omega from Balming Tiger and Gyuri Kim. Filmed while Zauner, who directed the video, was living in Seoul last year, 'Picture Window' follows the pair as they play tug of war with the passage of time.
'Ever since I was a young girl I've dealt with intrusive thoughts of loved ones dying horrible deaths,' Zauner said in a statement. 'When someone is running late or they've neglected a text or even if they're just looking over a balcony, my mind has a tendency to run to the worst case scenario, a reflex only exacerbated by my experience of many real deaths. It can be both a relief and a struggle to love someone who doesn't share this same proclivity for anxiety. Picture Window explores that dynamic.'

The video cuts between scenes that are soaked in cold blue hues and others that are hyper-realistic, where the couple runs through city streets and frolic through parks. Zauner was drawn to Omega's energy and charm when casting him in the role, but it was Kim's 'melancholy and uncertainty,' she says, that made them a perfect match.
'Watching it back, it's bittersweet to look back on my year abroad—the wonderful people I met, the neighborhoods I loved and lived in,' Zauner said. 'The constant tracking from left to right is a reminder of how time continues to pass no matter how forcefully you struggle to beat it back or rush to get ahead of it. I watch out the window as the scenery passes, visualizing all my unlived lives swishing past.'
'Picture Window' appears on the recently-released Japanese Breakfast album For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women), their first since 2021's Jubilee.

Conan Gray Announces New Album ‘Wishbone'
Conan Gray surprised fans this morning by announcing that his fourth album, Wishbone, will be released on August 15th. The lead single, 'This Song,' is set to drop next week. Gray shared the news in a lengthy post, revealing that he had been slowly writing new music on his own, late after shows and between tours over the past two years. 'I'd come back home and write all the things I felt nobody wanted to hear,' he explained, 'maybe even the things i didn't want people to hear.' 'But over time, I began to feel something I'd never felt before,' he wrote. 'I started to need the music. I listened in airports, in long cab trips, blaring in the shower. In heartbreak, then in joy. I started to play it for my friends, and they started to need it too. In car ride requests with the windows down, in a split pair of wired headphones on the subway home. It became an egregiously niche soundtrack to our own lives in real time, singing just for us.' After playing the songs for frequent collaborator Daniel Nigro, Gray began to record the album. 'It felt like the music was reminding me who I am, at an experimental time in my twenties where 'who I am' had no definition at all,' he continued. 'My driftwood childhood in texas. My lucid summers in London. My blue striped bed sheets in my college apartment.' Gray added that every song was written by himself, in his pajamas, in his bed. Nigro, along with Ethan Gruska, Noah Conrad, Elvira Anderfjärd, and Luka Kloser, produced the album. The fantastical album cover depicts Gray dressed like a sailor floating on a pillow and holding a large wishbone of the album's namesake. 'Here's so much left to say, but I'll say it in the music,' he wrote. In a postscript to the message, he added that 'a wishbone never breaks even.' Gray released his third LP Found Heaven last April. He subsequently went on tour that summer in support of the album. He'll be playing Governors Ball in New York this June. Miley Cyrus concealed the cost of drugs from her accountant during the making of her 2015 album by disguising them as high-end vintage clothing purchases. The 32-year-old singer and songwriter, whose battles with drink and drugs have been well-documented, made the admission during an appearance on the Every Single Album podcast. Speaking about the period surrounding her experimental album Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz, Miley said: 'We called (drug purchases) vintage clothes. And every time (my accountant) saw me, she'd be like, 'Where's that, like, $15,000 original John Lennon T-shirt that you bought?' 'It's like, 'Oh, it's upstairs.' So I bought a lot of vintage clothes that year.' The Grammy-winning artist went on to explain to avoid suspicion, she would tell her accountant the garments were 'really delicate' and needed to be stored away to 'protect' them. She added: 'I'm so glad I survived that time in my life. I would definitely not encourage anyone else to go this hard, but the fact that I got through it, I'm very glad I got to do it.' Miley, who rose to prominence as a Disney Channel star before launching a highly successful music career, has long been candid about her relationship with drugs. In a 2013 interview with Rolling Stone, she said: 'Hollywood is a coke town, but weed is so much better. And molly, too. Those are happy drugs – social drugs. They make you want to be with friends. You're out in the open. You're not in a bathroom.' In 2017, she revealed she had gotten sober after rekindling her relationship with then-partner Liam Hemsworth. She told Billboard magazine: 'I haven't smoked weed in three weeks, which is the longest I've ever (gone without it,) I'm not doing drugs, I'm not drinking, I'm completely clean right now!' But in November 2020, Miley acknowledged that she had relapsed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking publicly at the time, she confirmed the setback but said she had resumed sobriety within two weeks. Miley has also recently been in the headlines over a rumoured rift with her country-rock singer father Billy Ray Cyrus, but other reports have said the two have quietly reconciled.
