Over 60 pc Americans doubtful of Trump's decision- making abilities on Russia-Ukraine war
Anchorage, Aug 15 (UNI) The Alaska summit between Trump and Putin is not finding many takers in the US, as over 60% of American public believe the meeting won't yield any solutions for ending the three-year long Russia – Ukraine war, as per the findings of Pew Research Center Poll. According to Politico, the poll's findings released on late yesterday, noted that the majority public was either 'not too confident' or 'not at all confident' that Trump can make 'wise decisions', regarding one of the deadliest conflicts in the world today. Democrats and other left-leaning parties and organisations have expressed even greater doubt regarding Trump's decision-making abilities, particularly over ending the war, as per the August poll. However, Trump's popularity has waned even in his own political circle, with the Republicans' confidence recording a downslide. 73% of the Republicans told Pew they are somewhat or very confident in Trump's ability to handle the war, compared to 81% reported in July 2024. The White House has refused to make any assumptions about the meeting's outcomes, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt calling it a 'listening exercise', while Trump likened it to a 'game of chess.' Trump has, however, commented on his willingness to impose greater economic sanctions on Moscow, if Putin refuses to agree to a settlement, threatening 'very severe economic sanctions.' Prior to the summit in Anchorage, Trump held a virtual meeting with Zelensky and other EU leaders on Wednesday, telling them that Ukraine would be a part of any discussions about possible territorial concessions after he previously suggested that any truce would include 'land swapping.' British CDS Admiral Tony Radkin says NATO can handle any Russian military venture
London, Aug 15 (UNI) The UK Chief of Defence Staff, and commander of the Royal UK Navy Tony Radkin, has urged NATO nations to not be afraid of Russia, stating that Moscow was just one while the bloc has 32 nations, and are capable of tackling any possible Russian aggression, reports Pravda. While speaking to PolitNavigator, Radkin said "The Black Sea Fleet was destroyed by a country that barely has a navy. Russia's strategic bombers were destroyed by a country that barely has an air force, and Russia was forced to restructure its economy on a war footing that will be incredibly difficult to get off... We should not be afraid of Putin's rhetoric or his campaign of state sabotage. 'As disgusting as they are, they do not change the situation. In fact, Russia is conducting covert attacks on us precisely because it cannot do so more openly - Putin does not want a war with NATO, he cannot even win a war with Ukraine.' The British Defence Chief's comments come ahead of increased fears by EU nations that Moscow could wage war against Europe if it wins its war in Ukraine, with the bloc agreeing to increasing its defence budget by 5% of its total GDP by 2035. The EU is also opting for increased militarisation, having already increased its total military expenditure by over 30% from 2021-2024, and committing to divert increased civilian funding towards Europe's defence infrastructure to reduce reliance on US munitions. Stating that Russia had grown 'weaker' and thus more 'dangerous', he added 'Putin is not shy about using violence to achieve his goals. And we must clearly understand the threat that the Baltic and Scandinavian countries bordering Russia are particularly acutely aware of.' Urging joint defence cooperation between members, he said 'We need to defend ourselves on the front line. Russia has more reason to fear the union of 32 countries than the other way around.' Russian FM arrives in Alaska donning sweatshirt with USSR initials in apparent mockery of West
Anchorage, Aug 15 (UNI) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in the American city of Anchorage on Friday, as part of the Russian delegation for the US-Russia presidential summit. The Russian official gained considerable media notoriety for donning a sweatshirt with the initials of the USSR on it. His fashion choice invited considerable backlash, as well as speculation over Moscow's position on the Russia-Ukraine war, with the sweater carrying the initials 'СССP' (translating in English to USSR). While this has been cited as more of a move trolling Ukraine than anything else, reflecting Moscow's combative and uncompromising tone – further lending credence to the FM's earlier statement on Russia's firm stance on the summit - there's been considerable speculation over Lavrov having a strong bout of Soviet nostalgia with him. The move invited massive slamming by netizens and foreign officials, who said that the Russian Foreign Minister donning a sweatshirt with the initials of the erstwhile Soviet Union on US soil was a clear nod to the Kremlin's lack of respect for Washington, with many American netizens stating that this was Moscow's way of mocking and laughing at the entire West.
