Young Talent Big Dreams drew hundreds of performers. Meet the 2025 winners

Miami Herald16-05-2025

A high-stepping ninth-grader from New World School of the Arts soared above the stage with the agility of yesteryear dancer Gene Kelly. Tamerlan Guliyev won the grand prize of the 15th annual Young Talent Big Dreams competition in Coral Gables on May 10.
His vehicle to the top of the judges' sheets? 'Dancin' Fool,' an ebullient number from Barry Manilow's 'Copacabana: The Musical.'
An 11-year-old's original composition swept North Beach Elementary fifth-grader Soleil Nation to victory in an individual category.
One group vocal winner of kids ages 9 to 13 sang a song called 'Revolting Children.' The chuckle-inducing title proved anything but.
That tune, performed by children from Doral's SAH Conservatory of Dramatic Arts, comes from 'Matilda the Musical.' But the title of Soleil's winning composition, 'Stepping Stones,' proved a more fitting thematic description of what a cheering audience saw on the Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre stage: Young talented people's stepping stones to success in the arts.
Actors' Playhouse, together with presenting sponsor The Children's Trust, held the finals of the 15th annual Young Talent Big Dreams, a local, free youth talent competition that has scoured Miami-Dade County for young talent every year since 2010.
Young Talent Big Dreams invites students, ages 8 to 18, to compete in nine categories that tap their talents. The competition features six individual categories: pop/rock/rap vocals, Broadway/jazz/classical vocals, dance, musical instrument, original spoken word, and original vocal and/or instrumental composition. There are also three group categories for dance, musical instrument/bands, and vocal groups.
The competition proved that powering through disappointments with pluck, perseverance and poise can pay off.
Nina Marie, 16, has competed for nearly half of her life — seven years — at previous YTBD auditions. She finally seized the spotlight as a winner at the 15th finals showcase. She sparkled on Andra Day's aptly titled 'Rise Up' in the Individual Vocal Pop/Rock/Rap category.
After confetti exploded on stage after Tamerlan's win as the overall best of the night, YTBD's 2024 champ Gerry Ibarra, 17, bounded on stage to congratulate his successor.
A two-month marathon of preliminary and semifinal competitions began in March at the Miracle Theatre in Coral Gables. Subsequent auditions were held at the Dennis C. Moss Cultural Arts Center in Cutler Bay, the City of Miami Little Haiti Cultural Complex and Miami Arts Studio 6-12 @ Zelda Glazer in West Miami-Dade.
The rounds drew hundreds of contestants. Prizes include cash awards, master classes with industry professionals, year-round performance opportunities and performing arts scholarships.
'Marking 15 incredible years of Young Talent Big Dreams is both a milestone and a celebration of the extraordinary young artists who have taken our stage,' Barbara Stein, executive producing director of Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre said in a statement. 'Watching these talented performers blossom year after year continues to be one of the most rewarding aspects of our work.'

Harry Potter Actor Alastair Stout's Age Explained

With the casting process for the upcoming Harry Potter reboot series entering its final stages, HBO has now announced the trio who will occupy the leading roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. With Alastair Stout joining the cast as Ron alongside Dominic McLaughlin as Harry and Arabella Stanton as Hermione, fans have become curious about the child actor and his age. Here's everything you need to know about Stout and what's currently known about his age. While the exact age of Alastair Stout remains unknown, he is believed to have been born between 2014 and 2016. As such, the British youngster could be anywhere between 9 to 11 years old at the time of writing, as this was the age range given in the casting call put out by producers. This would make Alastair Stout a similar age to the 11-year-old Arabella Stanton, as well as Dominic McLaughlin, whose age also falls in the 9 to 11-year-old bracket. Unlike his co-stars, however, Stout hasn't had much experience performing in front of the camera. McLaughlin has already secured roles in the upcoming Sky comedy Grow, as well as the BBC action adventure series Gifted, while Stanton has featured in renowned plays such as Matilda the Musical and Starlight Express. In sharp contrast, Alastair Stout, whose real age remains under wraps at the moment, has reportedly only starred in a single advertisement for Albert Bartlett potatoes so far. The newcomer portrays 'Son at dinner' in the commercial, which is titled 'Roll on Jersey Royal Season,' as per The Scotsman. While Harry Potter fans might take some time to adjust to the aforementioned child actors taking over the roles of Hogwarts' iconic trio from Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner believes that they have found the right actors to carry on the Harry Potter legacy. 'The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen,' Gardiner noted while confirming the cast for Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the much-awaited Harry Potter reboot. HBO's Harry Potter Series Casts Harry, Ron & Hermione

The HBO Harry Potter series has found its three leads. Newcomers Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton have been cast as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. They will play the starring roles in a TV epic that will span at least a decade. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint did the same for the hit blockbuster movies. Rowling Says & More Ralph Fiennes Set For Villain Role Of President Snow In 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping' 'The Last Of Us' Season 2 Finale Draws 3.7 Million Cross-Platform U.S. Viewers For HBO Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod said: 'After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It's been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.' A whopping 32,000 kids had auditioned for what are undoubtedly three of the biggest TV roles of the coming decade. McLaughlin, Stanton and Stout will now prepare for cameras to roll, which will happen this summer at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden with the first season set to air in 2026. They are all relative TV newcomers. McLaughlin has a role in the BBC's upcoming action adventure series Gifted while Stanton played Matilda in Matilda The Musical in London's West End across several months. The process to find the Boy Who Lived and his two best friends has gone on for months and months, we revealed in our deep dive several weeks back, following a much-publicized open callout published by the show's casting director Bevan, which asked for children aged between nine and 11 as of April 2025 who were residents of the UK and Ireland. The call specified a commitment to 'inclusive, diverse casting' and asked that, for each role, agents 'submit qualified performers, without regard to ethnicity, sex, disability, race, sexual orientation and gender identity.' The initial round asked candidates to submit two videos, one performing a short story or poem and the second asking them to talk about themselves as well as 'a family member, friend or pet that you are particularly close to.' Adult cast so far revealed for the high-profile HBO adaptation include Paapa Essiedu taking on potions master Snape, John Lithgow as head master Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Given the number of audition tapes that were submitted for Harry, Ron and Hermione, sources have previously told us it is likely that many other young cast members will be drawn from said tapes, allowing Bevan's team to more easily locate the future Draco Malfoy, Dean Thomas and Cho Chang. Some of the Weasley's in particular, of which there are six brothers including mischievous twins Fred and George, could be drawn from those who didn't quite make the cut as Ron. The series has been described as a 'faithful adaptation' of the beloved books and is being exec produced by the source material's author J.K. Rowling, who has attracted controversy aplenty for remarks around trans rights over the past few months. It will land on the recently re-rebranded HBO Max (formerly HBO Max then Max). The series is written and executive produced by Gardiner. Mylod will executive produce and direct multiple episodes of the series for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. The series is executive produced by Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films. Stanton is represented by Gavin Mills and Julie Gordon at Olivia Bell, and Public Eye. Best of Deadline 'Hacks' Season 4 Release Schedule: When Do New Episodes Come Out? Meet the actors who will play Harry, Hermione and Ron in HBO's ‘Harry Potter' series

After an extensive search, HBO has officially found young wizards Harry, Ron and Hermione for its upcoming 'Harry Potter' series. Newcomers Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton are the chosen ones to play Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, respectively, of the more than 30,000 children who auditioned during the open casting call. Filming begins this summer and the show premieres next year. 'The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen,' executive producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod said in a statement. 'We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It's been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.' Gardiner will serve as showrunner and Mylod will direct multiple episodes of the series. Author J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film & TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films will also executive produce. Here's everything we know about the reimagining of the classic franchise. Prior to nabbing the titular role in 'Harry Potter,' McLaughlin studied at the Performance Academy Scotland for five years. He is set to appear in BBC's upcoming series 'Gifted,' about Scottish teens who discover they have superpowers, and the Sky film 'Grow,' about a grumpy pumpkin farmer and her orphaned niece. 'The news is out and this one is MAGICAL!!' wrote the Performance Academy Scotland on Instagram. 'We are not sure that this will ever feel real but we said from the start that Dominic was the perfect Harry & we are thrilled for everyone else to see this soon too.' 'Harry Potter' is Stout's first major role. His only other credited appearance is a commercial for Albert Bartlett potatoes. Stanton starred as Matilda Wormwood in 'Matilda the Musical' in London's West End from 2023 to 2024. The English actress also played the narrator Control in Andrew Lloyd Webber's play 'Starlight Express' in 2024. Previously announced cast members include John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch. HBO has said the show will span a decade and remain faithful to Rowling's books. The original films starred Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson. In addition to the seven bestsellers and eight hit films, the franchise also spawned the 'Fantastic Beasts' movie prequels, starring Eddie Redmayne, the play 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' and themed areas at Universal parks.
