‘Hertz Tried to Sue Us:' P.I. Rents Nissan Altima. Then He Shares What You Should Always Do Before Leaving the Rental Lot

A private investigator offers rental car drivers a tip: Take a video of your vehicle before driving it off of the lot.
TikTok user Mike Calnan of Northstar Investigations (
@mikecalnan5
) posted a video with his rental car advice on July 7. In the video, the private investigator (P.I.) with 30 years' experience is circling a Nissan Altima with visible dents and scrapes.

Calnan says private investigators often rent cars. That's how he learned this trick.
"Always take videos of the car before you rent it," he says. "Because I dropped it off after the weekend. They called me and said, 'You returned a dented car.'"
'Nope, not having it,' he adds. 'That was a 4th of July party in your parking lot that dented your car.'
People largely agree Calnan's advice is sound.
Many offered additional advice they've heard about the rental car process over the years.
One said, "A rental agent told me to video, take pictures, and then email it all to myself immediately so that there's a time stamp. Best advice ever!"
Another agreed. "I video and take pictures," they wrote. "Plus, on the sheet with the car diagram on it I circle every area no matter how tiny the mark is and even on the windshield."
A third suggested, "Take a video when returning as well."

'Hertz tried to sue us for damages we did not do,' wrote one.
A second said, 'Yup SIXT at Atlanta Airport emailed me a month after I rented a car and said I need to pay 1451.00 for the damaged bumper I forgot to mention, nope here's the video, sorry thank you.'
Calnan did not identify the company he rented the car from.
Car Rental Advice
According to
industry data
, a quarter of rental car insurance claims are due to preexisting damage.
These claims are purportedly often filed because rental car customers aren't meticulous about documenting the state of vehicles before they're driven off the lot.
A personal injury attorney
says
that if you receive notice about a rental car insurance claim that you believe is due to preexisting damage, you can:
Provide the company with time-stamped photos and/or videos you took before leaving the lot and upon return;
Ask for rental records from after your vehicle return date;
Contact your insurance company; and/or
Hire an attorney who is knowledgeable about rental car laws.
To avoid an unwarranted claim, the easiest thing to do is be obsessive about documenting the condition of the vehicle before you leave the lot. Look over and note each and every paint chip and bumper scuff before ever climbing behind the wheel.
If you get into an accident while in your rental car, it's important to contact the company and your insurance provider to report it. If another driver was at fault or if you secured a vehicle protection policy for the rental at checkout, you'll generally be in the clear, per
Hertz Car Rental
.
Your own car insurance may also cover the damages, depending on your policy.
If you didn't notice the damage or the vehicle came into your possession already damaged, and you return it to the rental car company, the company may file a rental car insurance claim. This may come at a shock if the claim is over damage caused by someone else.
That way, as Calnan says in his TikTok's caption, you may 'avoid this nonsense happening!'

ICE detainee found hanging by neck in detention facility

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainee has died in custody after he was found hanging by his neck in the shower room at the Pennsylvania facility where he was being held, according to ICE. Chaofeng Ge, a 32-year-old citizen of China in ICE custody, was pronounced dead by the Clearfield County coroner at approximately 6 a.m. on Tuesday, according to ICE. While the cause of death is under investigation, Ge was found hanging by the neck and unresponsive in the shower room of his detention pod, ICE said. MORE: ICE recruitment efforts upset some local law enforcement leaders Staff who discovered Ge immediately lowered him to the ground, began CPR and contacted emergency medical services, state police and the coroner's office, according to ICE. Ge had been in ICE custody for only five days and was awaiting a hearing before the Department of Justice's Executive Office for Immigration Review, ICE said. Ge was detained at the Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania. He was arrested in January for criminal use of a communication facility, unlawful use of a computer and access device fraud, according to ICE. ICE Philadelphia's Enforcement and Removal Operations York sub-office lodged an immigration detainer with the Dauphin County Prison one day after he was arrested. Ge pleaded guilty to accessing a device issued to another who did not authorize use and conspiracy to commit the same on July 31, according to ICE, and was sentenced to six to 12 months for each count and granted immediate release to the ICE detainer. He was then taken into ICE custody and transported to the York ICE office for processing, ICE said. MORE: IndyCar says it was unaware of DHS's use of AI-generated image featuring ICE branding "ICE remains committed to ensuring that all those in its custody reside in safe, secure, and humane environments," ICE said in a statement. "Comprehensive medical care is provided from the moment individuals arrive and throughout the entirety of their stay." "All people in ICE custody receive medical, dental and mental health intake screening within 12 hours of arriving at each detention facility, a full health assessment within 14 days of entering ICE custody or arrival at a facility, access to medical appointments and 24-hour emergency care," ICE said. The Department of Homeland Security acknowledged in a statement there was an in-custody death at the processing center. 'This morning, one detainee passed away at the Moshannon Valley Processing Center. All in-custody deaths are tragic, taken seriously, and are thoroughly investigated by law enforcement," a senior DHS official told ABC News. "ICE takes its commitment to promoting safe, secure, humane environments for those in our custody very seriously," the official said.

FBI fires senior officials at odds with Trump administration

Congressional news January 6th Federal agencies Donald TrumpFacebookTweetLink Follow Two senior FBI officials, including one who initially resisted the Trump administration's effort to gather the names of agents who worked on cases related to the US Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, are being fired, multiple sources tell CNN. Brian Driscoll, who was acting FBI director in the weeks before now-Director Kash Patel was confirmed, is being dismissed, sources said. Steve Jensen, the acting director in charge of the Washington Field Office, is also being fired, according to two separate sources. The administration has also fired other agents in the bureau this week who were perceived to be opposed to Trump in the past, according to three sources familiar with the agency's actions. CNN has reached out to the FBI and its New York field office for comment. The FBI's Washington field office declined to comment. Earlier this year, a plan to quickly fire more than 100 mid-level and senior employees blew up into a weeklong standoff between then-acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove and Driscoll and sparked internal protest against the move inside the agency. The rebellion prompted Trump to appoint a loyalist podcaster Dan Bongino as deputy director of the FBI. Bongino recently considered resigning from the post following the administration's handling of documents and information relating to Jeffrey Epstein. The demand earlier this year for thousands of names of FBI agents involved in the January 6 cases came from Bove, who said in a memo at the time that the list of names would be reviewed for any firing or 'personnel actions,' according to the memo. 'The FBI — including the Bureau's prior leadership — actively participated in what President Trump appropriately described as 'a grave national injustice that has been perpetrated on the American people over the last four years' with respect to events that occurred at or near the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021,' Bove said at the time. 'This request,' Driscoll wrote to all bureau personnel following Bove's memo, 'encompasses thousands of employees across the country who have supported these investigative efforts.' Both Driscoll and Jensen had been with the FBI for nearly 20 years and served in various roles, including in leadership roles across the country. In 2020, Jensen served as the section chief of the Domestic Terrorism Operations Section at FBI Headquarters in Washington. Driscoll – who has been awarded the FBI Medal of Valor and the FBI Shield of Bravery for actions under fire – also served as the commander of the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team and special agent in charge of the Newark Field Office. CNN's Kara Scannell and Kristen Holmes contributed to this report.
