Today in Politics: PM Modi to meet multi-party delegations; amid reunion buzz, NCP factions to mark foundation day
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet members of the multi-party delegations, who had travelled to world capitals to convey India's stand following Operation Sindoor, on Tuesday, sources said.
Official sources said the members will be sharing their feedback with the PM, whose government has praised the work of the seven delegations comprising over 50 persons, mostly current MPs.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has already met the delegations and praised their efforts in conveying India's strong stand against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.
Four delegations were led by the ruling alliance, including two BJP MPs, one JD(U) MP and one of Shiv Sena, while three were led by opposition MPs, one each of the Congress, DMK and NCP(SP).
NCP foundation day
Amid buzz of a possible reunion, the two rival factions of the NCP – led by veteran leader Sharad Pawar and his nephew and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar – will hold separate 'Foundation Day' gatherings in Pune on Tuesday.
Despite the reports of a potential reunion between Ajit's ruling NCP and Sharad's Opposition NCP(SP), both sides have insisted there was no such proposal on the table. Frequent meetings between Sharad and Ajit Pawar at public and private events have fuelled speculations about the factions reuniting after a split in the party in July 2023.
On Tuesday, while Sharad Pawar will address workers and office-bearers at a function in the morning, Ajit Pawar will participate in a programme in the evening in Pune, the home turf of the Pawar family.
According to political observers, party workers are expecting clarity and future roadmaps for their respective factions from the top leadership.
Stampede petitions in Karnataka HC
Karnataka High Court on Monday said it will hear on Tuesday the petitions of Royal Challengers Bengaluru and DNA Entertainment Pvt Ltd challenging criminal cases against them in the stadium stampede incident.
The stampede occurred on June 4 in front of the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru, where a large number of people thronged to participate in the RCB team's IPL victory celebrations. Eleven people died and 56 were injured in the incident.
Meanwhile, CM Siddaramaiah of the Congress government will travel to New Delhi on Tuesday to meet the Congress high command, where he is expected to discuss various developments, including the stampede. Siddaramaiah had on Sunday denied reports that the Congress high command had sought information from him regarding the stampede.
CPI(M)'s delegation to J&K
During a meeting of its central committee earlier this month, the CPI(M) decided it would send a party delegation led by general secretary M A Baby to Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday as part of its campaign against terror.
The other members of the delegation include Lok Sabha MPs Amra Ram, K Radhakrishnan and Su Venkatesan, and Rajya Sabha MPs John Brittas, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya and A A Rahim.
The party is also planning to hold a week-long campaign in June against 'terrorism, war mongering and efforts to spread communal hatred' using the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

Amid din over Bengaluru stampede, Congress orders new Karnataka caste survey
NEW DELHI/BENGALURU: Congress decided Tuesday to undertake a fresh caste survey in Karnataka, citing rumblings within the state's dominant communities about the reliability of the 2015 enumeration data, and asking CM Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar to target a 60- to 80-day timeframe for the exercise. Sources said the immediate incentive for the Congress brass to push the exercise was to deliver something that would potentially take the heat off the Siddaramaiah govt amid an accountability crisis in the aftermath of the June 4 Bengaluru stampede in which 11 cricket fans died. Also read: Congress top brass raps state unit for Bengaluru stampede "The party agrees in principle with the state govt on addressing the concerns of some communities that have reservations about caste data, which is a decade old and outdated. Hence, the party suggested re-enumeration within a stipulated time," AICC general secretary KC Venugopal said. The decision effectively means that the Kantharaj Commission's 2015 report goes into deep freeze, although Venugopal said it would be "discussed" at a cabinet meeting scheduled for Thursday. Siddaramaiah said the proposed re-enumeration would mimic the ongoing survey of Scheduled Castes in the state and would likely be completed within three months. Leaked data from the Kantharaj Commission's report suggest Siddaramaiah's core vote bank of Ahinda (Kannada acronym for minorities, backward classes and Dalits) has grown exponentially, compared to the Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities. Congress insiders suggested that CM's reluctance, if any, to accept the decision to conduct a fresh caste survey would be balanced by the prospect of the stampede backlash getting "lost in the new noise". Deputy CM Shivakumar said the decision was meant to enable everyone to resubmit information during house-to-house surveys and through online submissions. "Since this process would be an extensive one, we will decide the strategy at the next cabinet meeting. CM will then announce the timeline."

Proud of how MPs advocated India's voice, says PM Modi
NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday commended the seven multi-party delegations for effectively representing India's stance in global capitals following Operation Sindoor , a decisive strike against terrorist hubs in Pakistan and PoK. "Met members of various delegations who represented India in different countries and elaborated on India's commitment to peace and the need to eradicate the menace of terrorism. We're all proud of the manner in which they put forward India's voice," PM said on X. Over 50 representatives from the delegations, who visited 33 foreign capitals and the EU, called on Modi to share their experiences. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said the PM was "very pleasant" to the delegation members, seeing it as an opportunity to thank them. "He walked around the lawn to different tables, talking to different groups of people... It was a good, lively, informal meeting," Tharoor said, adding that MPs shared insights and suggested such visits be made a regular practice, which the PM seemed to support. The delegations - comprising current and former MPs and ex-diplomats - conveyed India's firm stand against Pakistan-linked terrorism and its commitment to global peace. EAM S Jaishankar had earlier praised the delegations for highlighting India's position.

"Slogans Not Enough. We Are Not Saints": Ajit Pawar On Joining BJP Alliance
Pune: Justifying his decision to join hands with the BJP, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Ajit Pawar on Tuesday said he and his colleagues were not "saints" who could remain in the opposition and be content with protesting and shouting slogans. Speaking at an event here to mark the 26th Foundation Day of the undivided NCP, Ajit Pawar, currently Maharashtra deputy chief minister, made no definitive statement about the possibility of reuniting with his estranged uncle Sharad Pawar's faction. "The NCP was founded on the ideologies of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Mahatma Phule, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj. Some people question our decision to join hands with the BJP and the Mahayuti coalition," said Ajit Pawar, who parted ways with his uncle in 2023. "But didn't we align with the Shiv Sena in 2019? Even then, compromises were made. Just sitting in the opposition, raising slogans and taking out protest marches is not enough. We are not saints. We are here to give a direction, address people's issues, and practice the politics of inclusion," he said. The party did not form an alliance with the BJP at the cost of ideology, Ajit Pawar claimed. "When we decided to join the NDA and Mahayuti in Maharashtra, we saw that leaders like Chandrababu Naidu, known for secular ideology, had also aligned with the NDA. In the past, leaders such as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee were also part of the NDA. Our focus is want the schemes of the Centre and state government to reach the last man in society, to improve the people's standard of living and ensure that no section of society feels excluded," he said. On speculation surrounding a possible merger of the two NCP factions, Ajit Pawar said party workers may hold differing opinions, but the final decision rests with the leadership. "It is the party leaders who deliberate and decide on such matters," he added. A systematic campaign was underway to spread misinformation about fund distribution by his ministry, said Pawar who holds the finance portfolio in the BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP government. "Compared to the previous budget, we have increased allocations for Scheduled Tribes," he said, referring to a row over alleged diversion of funds from the ST department for the Ladki Bahin scheme for women. He also refuted rumours that the Ladki Bahin scheme, under which eligible women receive Rs 1500 per month, was being discontinued.
