Maharashtra Politics: Are Decks Clear For NCP-NCPSP Merger? Chatter Grows About NDA Crossing 300-Mark

Is Maharashtra's political landscape set to witness another twist? There are indications but no concrete answers as of now but the talks of Ajit Pawar-led NCP's merger with Sharad Pawar-led NCP-SP has once against ignited political debates. Ajit Pawar recently shared dias with Sharad Pawar in Pune and those aware of the matter said that the two leaders held separate talks about the reunion. Meanwhile, NCP-SP leader Rohit Pawar also dropped a big hint about the possible reunification of the two warring factions. Speaking to reporters, Rohit Pawar said that senior Pawar has entrusted Supriya Sule with the task and she will take the final call after discussing it with party leaders. He said that while Sharad Pawar has been hinting at a possible alliance with Ajit Pawar, there may be some twist with respect to the BJP. Rohit Pawar said that Sharad Pawar is known for making decisions which are mostly unexpected and totally out of the blue. "What unfolds in the coming days will depend on him, but he will always take a decision in favour of the people," Rohit said. While NCP leaders like Rohit and Anil Deshmukh have maintained that no official talks have been held so far between the two parties, the clamour around the merger has already forced leaders to vie for key party posts. Notably, if the merger happens, Praful Patel and Supriya Sule will be among the top contenders for the Modi cabinet. The chatters have also grown on social media with people claiming that the NCP-NCPSP merger could take place in June itself and thus, the BJP-led NDA's number in the Lok Sabha may go beyond the 300 mark. Notably, the NDA has 293 seats in the Lok Sabha and if the NCPSP joins the alliance, then its tally will go to 301 with the eight seats of Shara Pawar's party. NCP-SP's merger or joining of the NDA will deal a big jolt to the Maha Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra where the Congress and Shiv Sena-UBT are largely dependent on the NCP-SP in regions like Western Maharashtra and Marathawada.

16 Opposition parties seek special Parliament session on Operation Sindoor, India-Pakistan tensions

Leaders from 16 Opposition parties on Tuesday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding a special session of Parliament on Operation Sindoor and its aftermath. Leaders from several parties, including the Congress, Trinamool Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Samajwadi Party, and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), held a meeting to discuss the matter earlier in the day. Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien told the media: 'The government is responsible to the Parliament; Parliament is responsible to the people. That's why we are demanding a special session of the Parliament.' Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda said the special session should address matters from the Pahalgam terror attack to Operation Sindoor to the United States announcing a ceasefire between India and Pakistan on May 10. The letter said: 'There are serious questions facing the nation about the terror attack, killing of civilians in Poonch, Uri and Rajouri, the ceasefire announcements and the implications on our national security and foreign policy.' Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) was not a signatory to the letter. However, speaking about the party's absence, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said: 'Sharad Pawar is also with us. Supriya Sule is out with the delegation. When I reach Mumbai, I will speak with Sharad Pawar.' O'Brien added that the Aam Aadmi Party is also due to write a separate letter to the prime minister with a similar demand on Wednesday. At least 22 Indian civilians and eight defence personnel were killed in Pakistani shelling in India's border areas. Tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad escalated on May 7 when the Indian military carried out strikes – codenamed Operation Sindoor – on what it claimed were terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes were in response to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which killed 26 persons on April 22. The Pakistan Army retaliated to Indian strikes by repeatedly shelling Indian villages along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. At least 22 Indian civilians and eight defence personnel were killed in the shelling. India and Pakistan on May 10 reached an 'understanding' to halt firing following the four-day conflict. The announcement by Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri came minutes after Trump claimed on social media that New Delhi and Islamabad had agreed to the ceasefire.

INDIA bloc to meet on Special Session of Parliament

Leaders of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance will be meeting in the capital on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) to present a united front and press for a Special Session of Parliament to 'discuss the developments following the terror attack in Pahalgam'. The Opposition has been in talks to write a joint appeal demanding a Special Session, arguing that it has stood by the government and supported its efforts in engaging with the international community on India's position. Seven multi-party delegations are on a tour across the world with the aim to refocus the narrative on Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. The Opposition wants the Parliament session to be organised after the delegations return over the next week. They are arguing for a 'full and frank debate', saying in wake of similar conflicts, the Parliament had debated the issue. 'There are serious questions facing the nation about the terror attack, conflict, killing of civilians in Poonch, Uri and Rajouri, the ceasefire announcements, and the implications on our national security and foreign policy,' a top Opposition leader said. He further pointed that while the foreign nations and their media have been briefed, the Indian Parliament has not been. As per sources, the Opposition was undecided on whether to pen a joint letter or to get every Opposition MP to send a separate plea. A decision on such minutiae will be taken in Tuesday's meeting. As per sources, however, there could be more than a few absentees. No representative from the Nationalist Congress Party (SP) is likely to attend the meeting. Its leader Sharad Pawar had earlier said that a Special Session might not be appropriate. 'I am not against calling a Special Session of Parliament... but this is a sensitive and serious issue and discussing such a serious issue is not possible in Parliament... In such a situation, it is necessary to keep the information confidential for national interest,' he said. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had chaired an all-party meeting on May 8. On Monday, Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Manoj K. Jha wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi making the same demand. Elaborating the reasons for the need to have a Special Session, Mr. Jha in his letter citing alleged 'interference of foreign governments in our sovereign foreign policy.' He pointed out, 'The United States President Donald Trump has claimed credit for brokering peace between India and Pakistan no less than 12 times since operations began.' It is crucial, Mr. Jha said, that the government explained who the U.S. government reached out to and what stand or perspective did India articulate in these discussions. 'When foreign leaders claim credit for resolving India's security challenges, our country's global standing takes a beating, Mr. Jha said. He added, 'The American intervention has hyphenated India and Pakistan once again. What began as India's legitimate counterterrorism response has become another chapter in President Trump's self proclaimed role as global peacemaker.'

Rohit Pawar hints at likely NCP merger

Mumbai: Rohit Pawar , a member of the Sharad Pawar family, has stirred the pot regarding a possible merger with the Ajit Pawar faction , stating that Supriya Sule would clarify the issue. Rohit Pawar, MLA and grandnephew of Sharad Pawar, was asked about merger talks and mentioned that it would be up to Supriya Sule to make the final decision. "Saheb (Sharad Pawar) has entrusted Supriya with this responsibility, and until she returns and speaks clearly on the matter... Supriya is currently abroad (with an all-party delegation for Operation Sindoor). She will return on May 5th, and after that, we are all waiting for her views," said Rohit Pawar, speaking at an event in Pune on Saturday. Rohit further claimed that no discussions have taken place among party leaders or MLAs, like himself, about merging with the NCP (Ajit faction). "Until Supriya returns and clarifies, we won't be able to shed light on this," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo He hinted that, while Sharad Pawar has been signaling a potential alliance with the Ajit Pawar faction and the BJP , there could still be a twist. "No one knows what's in Pawar saheb's mind. When he takes a decision, it's often unexpected and totally out of the blue. If he speaks politically, something different may happen. What unfolds in the coming days will depend on him, but he will always take a decision in favor of the people," Rohit said. It is significant that when the Ajit Pawar faction split and formed an alliance with the BJP, the Sharad Pawar faction opposed the move, citing ideological differences with the BJP. Live Events
