Thulashi, Nithya Secure Gold As India Triumphs At British & Irish Para Badminton 2025
India excelled at the British & Irish Para Badminton International 2025. Thulashi and Nithya Sre won gold. Sukant Kadam and Krishna Nagar won silver and bronze.
India delivered a standout performance at the British & Irish Para Badminton International 2025, a prestigious Level 1 event on the BWF circuit, held in Cardiff, United Kingdom.
Leading the medal charge were Thulashi Murugesan and Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan, who captured gold in their respective singles categories.
In the women's singles SU5 category, Thulashi showcased resilience and tactical brilliance to defeat compatriot Manisha Ramadass in a tightly contested all-Indian final. After dropping the first game 18–21, Thulashi fought back strongly to take the next two sets 21–17, 21–16, securing the gold in a thrilling encounter.
Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan added to India's gold tally with a gutsy win in the women's singles SH6 final. Facing Peru's Giuliana Poveda, the Indian shuttler won the opening game comfortably 21–11. After narrowly losing the second 21–23, she rebounded with a dominant 21–11 performance in the decider to seal the title.
Strong Showing in Men's Singles
India also impressed in the men's singles events, with Sukant Kadam taking silver in the SL4 category and Krishna Nagar securing a bronze in SH6.
World No. 2 Sukant reached the final after overcoming fellow Indian Naveen Sivakumar 21–14, 21–19 in the semifinals. However, he was outplayed by France's Lucas Mazur, the reigning Paralympic champion, in the final, losing 6–21, 14–21.
Paralympic gold medallist Krishna Nagar, meanwhile, battled hard in the SH6 semifinals but narrowly lost to Brazil's Vitor Tavares in a nail-biting match: 21–19, 20–22, 19–21. He settled for bronze after a valiant effort.

Indian chess prodigy Divya Deshmukh became the youngest to win the FIDE Women's World Cup on Monday at just the age of 19, outshining the seasoned Koneru Humpy in the tie-breaker of an all-Indian final. She his now the fourth Indian woman player to achieve the GM feat after Humpy, Dronavalli Harika and R Vaishali. 'I need time to process it (win). I think it was fate, me getting the Grandmaster title this way because before this (tournament) I didn't even have one (GM) norm, and now I am the Grandmaster,' she said. Divya Deshmukh secured a gold, Humpy Koneru pocketed silver, while China's sensation Tan Zhongy finished the tournament with a bronze medal. According to the FIDE website, the total prize fund accumulated for this year's Women's World Cup was $691,250. Out of this, the winner will be given $50,000. This means Divya Deshmukh received a prize money of $50,000, or roughly ₹ 43.5 lakh for winning the prestigious championship. The FIDE World Cup also awards three spots to the FIDE Women's Candidates Tournament to be held in the first half of 2026. However, the prize money is significantly lower than that of the FIDE World Cup (Open section, which includes both men and women), where the winner gets $110,000. During the tense contest, a string of inaccuracies in the second rapid game contributed to Koneru's downfall. She found herself a pawn down in the rook endgame, which played out in Divya's favour. The veteran allowed the situation to sink in and resigned on the 75th move and fell short in a gripping final with a score of 2.5-1.5.
