This UAE-built AI model understands Arabic and is better than ChatGPT, claims creator

Khaleej Times20-05-2025

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries worldwide, the development of locally built, culturally attuned technologies is gaining momentum.
In the UAE, one company is tackling a long-standing challenge: accurate Arabic speech recognition. CNTXT AI, based in Dubai, recently unveiled Munsit — a speech-to-text model designed specifically for Arabic, trained on thousands of hours of regional audio data.
We spoke with Mohammad Abu Sheikh, CEO of CNTXT AI, about why building this technology in the UAE matters, the complexities of Arabic dialects, and what this means for the future of AI in the region.
What inspired you to build an Arabic speech recognition model here in the UAE, when global giants already dominate the field?
We built Munsit because global tech giants weren't solving our problem. Arabic voice tech has long been underserved. Most models are designed for English, then retrofitted for Arabic, leading to low accuracy and misunderstood dialects. We saw a clear need and felt a responsibility to act. The UAE, with its AI-first vision and infrastructure, offered the ideal launchpad. It's a country committed not just to adopting AI, but building it.
That's what led to Munsit: a model engineered from the ground up for Arabic, reflecting our dialects, our data, and our region. We wanted to accelerate the shift from AI consumer to AI producer.
Many talk about the limitations of Arabic in tech, but few have tackled it at this scale. What were the linguistic or cultural challenges you faced, and how did you overcome them?
While many see Arabic as too complex for AI, we see it as a strategic opportunity. The real challenge wasn't the language, it was the data. Less than 5 per cent of online content is in Arabic, and even less is usable for training. If data is the new oil, then unstructured data is oil unrefined — full of potential but useless until processed. Without high-quality data, you can't build high-performing models, so we solved this problem ourselves.
We developed a data pipeline from scratch using weak supervision — a scalable, algorithmic approach that processed over 30,000 hours of raw Arabic audio and refined it into a clean, high-quality dataset ready for large-scale training. That gave us the foundation to train Munsit on how Arabic is actually spoken, at a speed and cost traditional methods simply couldn't match.
How did you source such a large and representative Arabic dataset, and what did you learn about the voices of the region in the process?
We built our Arabic speech dataset from scratch, sourcing voices from a wide range of real-world environments — news broadcasts, casual conversations, public archives, and everyday interactions across the region. We captured dialectal variation and quickly realised we were documenting the lived experience behind the language. These differences, shaped by history, geography, and culture, are more than linguistic. They're expressions of identity and belonging.
CNTXT AI calls this a 'sovereign technology' — what does that mean for the UAE's place in global AI development?
Sovereign AI means full ownership of the data, the infrastructure, and the outcomes. In the UAE, that translates into national investment and AI readiness at every level. Munsit is a result of that vision: built locally, deployed securely, and aligned with the country's digital priorities.
The UAE is defining its own path in AI; building models that reflect regional identity and serve local needs. Data sovereignty is central to that mission. Data is precious, and it must remain in our hands. That's how the UAE moves from participant to standard-setter in global AI — exporting trusted, culturally grounded technology.
What does this breakthrough mean for everyday Arabic speakers, especially in education, public services, or content creation?
Arabic speakers now have a model that understands them in real time, with contextual accuracy and speed. In education, it enables dialect-aware tools for early learners and non-literate users. Imagine Emirati ed-tech platforms offering voice feedback that reflects how students actually speak. In government, it addresses dialect diversity, especially in judicial settings where interpretation can break down. Munsit detects these differences, transcribes accurately, and localizes output into formats like Emirati Arabic. It powers fast, scalable transcription and indexing in media, making Arabic content easier to find, distribute, and monetise.
How big of a role did homegrown talent play in building Munsit, and do you see this as a turning point for young AI developers in the UAE?
Munsit was shaped by homegrown talent — every layer reflects regional hands and regional voices. And yes, this is a turning point. You don't need to leave the region to build breakthrough AI. The infrastructure is here. The capital is here. The ambition is here. The ecosystem is ready. You can invent, and not just implement, from the region and lead globally. It's validation for the next generation: world-class AI can, and will, be built right here.
What comes next for Munsit and for Arabic voice AI as a whole?
What's next? A new generation of Arabic-first products, designed here and deployed globally. Munsit serves as the voice layer in our broader AI stack alongside tools for preparing, testing, and deploying AI in a sovereign way. From this foundation, we're expanding fast: domain-specific voice agents and multilingual dialect switching. One of the most exciting developments : our Arabic Text-to-Speech suite, launching with Emirati and Saudi dialects. With native voice talent onboarded, we're delivering the region's fastest, most accurate Arabic TTS, a major step toward full-stack voice infrastructure.
What would you tell a young developer or linguist in the UAE who dreams of building world-class tech, right here?
Start now. Move fast. You don't need permission. You're already in one of the most AI-ready nations on earth. So build. Don't just dream of catching up. Dream of leading. Because if we don't build the future in our language, solving our own problems, who will?

Elon's blood feud with Trump will not gut SpaceX's $350 billion valuation

Matein Khalid I had analyzed SpaceX as a potential 10X winner in the Dubai media circa late 2020 when it traded at a mere $46 billion in the private market and even invited a number of close friends in an investor syndicate after sourcing shares from the Founders Fund in San Fran via the secondary market. Shakespear's Henry V praised the English longbow archers who won him the battle of Agincourt and thus the crown of France as 'we few, we happy few, we band of brothers'. I feel the same way about my SpaceX chums except our band of brothers includes a very noble sister. ADVERTISEMENT Is the 9X fairytale in SpaceX shares over, now that Elon publicly accused Trump of falsehood and even suggested that POTUS-47 was on a Jeff Epstein's Fantasy Island paedo guest list? Not at all, even though Trump has threatened to take away all Uncle Sam subsidies and contracts away from Elon's companies, now that the bromance of the century has gone sour with such a bang. Tesla (TSLA) shares naturally lost $150 billion last night on Nasdaq as TSLA plunged to 295 but a mass market EV car brand with stiff Chinese competition and declining market share cannot remotely be compared to SpaceX – Why? Unlike Tesla, SpaceX has no real technological peer and neither the Pentagon's Space Command nor NASA can or will replace SpaceX just because Trump has fallen out with Elon. America is not yet Russia, where Elon would take a jump from a window or be found with 6 bullets in his head, as happens in every Kremlin routine suicide. True, Wall Street is agog with rumours that the Navy SEAL team that whacked Osama in his safehouse is now rehearsing for even a more secret mission than Zero Dark Thirty to silence Geronimo. Jokes apart, SpaceX is too crucial to US national security, the rocket launch program and Space warfare to do anything but nurture SpaceX and help it grow bigger and richer in the years ahead for my band of brothers and noble sister. SpaceX is gaining market share and key awards and neither Trump nor even Musk can do much to derail its meteoric rise to Silicon Valley superstardom. SpaceX just won a $6 billion contract for 28 rocket launch missions critical to US national security from Space Command. Blue Origin only won a $2.4 billion contract for 7 rocket launches. SpaceX is easily the largest, most reliable, most successful, most technologically advanced space contractor for Uncle Sam and the President can do squat about this cold hard reality. SpaceX is on a roll with the world's top governments and intel agencies apart from USG/Uncle Sugar. After all, SpaceX commercial launch revenue rose by an incredible 56%, the kind of growth I see in a snappy, nappy software unicorn rather than a 20 year old Valley golden oldy that mesmerizes and owns Space, the Final Frontier… Sadly for Trump, Elon is Captain James T. Kirk and naughty even though he gets to yell 'beam me up Scotty' when the going gets tough on FX deal making with President Xi in Beijing. SpaceX is already the most profitable commercial rocket launch business the world has ever seen and its growth curve is not yet over. The FAA allowed SpaceX a five fold increase in rocket launches from its Texas base, now rebranded and incorporated as the City of Starbase. The air war between Indian and Pakistan tell the world's heads of state/spymasters that air battles will be won or lost via satellite based command and control centers, which the Chinese PLA has perfected to an art form. So I expect SpaceX to get some multi-billion dollar mega contracts from India, which is miffed at both Trump and French electronic warfare technologies. So can SpaceX command a $500 billion valuation? To borrow Obama's slogan, yes we can! Also published on Medium. Notice an issue? A sordid tale of the Blackstone IPO and a jailed NRI private bankster!

Matein Khalid I have had a neurological soft corner for Wall Street's alternative asset manager stocks ever since I resisted the come hither importunings of multiple Morgan Stanley (MS) managing directors before the firm sold its private wealth division in the DIFC to Credit Suisse. Everyone of these MS honchos wanted me to subscribe to the Blackstone IPO in the summer of 2007 at $32. They assured me that the biggest institutional investors in the UAE had all subscribed to the IPO and I was even excluded from a dinner with Stephen Schwartzmann, Blacktone's founder and chairman, since I refused to give MS an order for a $50 million IPO bid. By the summer of 2007, I was convinced that the world was headed into a traumatic global recession and even published an article in English which would have saved my fellow Dubai investors billions of dollars had they bothered to read it for free in the Khaleej Times as far back as January 2007. This article accurately predicted the global financial meltdown a year before it happened and is uploaded above. ADVERTISEMENT Naturally, these Morgan Stanley private bankers despite their fancy titles of MD, Imperial Wizards, King of Kings and Chief Concubine were clueless about the nuances of the global capital markets. I have learnt the hard way that the private banking and wealth business in the Middle East is really the blind leading the blind to the slaughterhouse, invariably with high octane leverage and absurdly high fees for the privileges of helping you gut your financial net-worth in the capital markets they barely understand. I sealed my unpopularity with Morgan Stanely's pinstriped bureaucrats in Dubai when I wrote successive articles, listing myriad reasons why I wanted to short both Morgan Stanley and Blackstone at 32. History or a cursory look at your smartphone will record that MS almost failed in the post Lehman Wall Street panic and the Blackstone IPO plunged from 32 to 4. To compound the insult that Dubai's top NRI investors faced as they haemorrhaged money on the advice of the MS clowns, the top Indian broker on the MS bench (Manoj Prasad) was jailed for fraud, money laundering and trying to bribe a CBI officer in India. So much for Wall Street/Swiss due diligence/ethics when it comes time to fleece the leveraged NRI lambs in the Gulf. My readers know I wrote successive columns in the UAE/British media recommending investors buy Blackstone (BX) shares at 10-12 when the distribution yield was 9%. I even recommended in writing to the chairman of the royal investment office where I was CIO not to allocate $25 million to Abraaj Capital for a board seat that meant squat at 3.5X book value when he could invest in Blackstone at $10 a share, way below book value. That $25 million went to money heaven when Abraaj failed in 2018 after Arif Naqvi's criminal fraud. Blackstone shares I recommended rose from $10 in 2010 to as high as $200. So that $25 million in Abraaj's eternal money heaven would be valued at $500 million if my poor chairman who had never heard of Steve Schwarzman but Magu, our Group CFO, a Karachi accountant, was dazzled by the intellectual brilliance of Arif Naqvi, the Gulf media's financier of the millennium. Moral of the story? If you think Wharton is expensive, try ignorance! Blackstone is now the planet's biggest alt asset manager with $1.2 trillion AUM and is valued at $167 billion on the NYSE. I am a nervous long at $136 since I believe the US private credit market will be gutted in a recession that is now inevitable in Q3, the reason why I went long up the wazoo on TLT at 84 as I expect JayPo to capitulate on rate cuts at the September FOMC. I want to exit my BX long via a covered call strategy before July 4th, our Independence Day. I am pretty sure I will be able to buy BX below 100 when the macro wolf finally swallows Grandma Goldilocks. We saw this movie before in the autumn of 2008 ADVERTISEMENT Also published on Medium. Create Production brings Vox Cinemas' sonic identity to life with Hans Zimmer

Create Production has joined forces with Majid Al Futtaim Entertainment to unveil Fall in Love with Film, Vox Cinemas' latest brand film that signals a new chapter for the region's premier cinema operator. The cinematic tribute, released in celebration of Vox Cinemas' 25th anniversary, is underscored by an original score and sonic identity created by legendary composer Hans Zimmer. The emotionally rich film is a love letter to the power of cinema, weaving together themes of love, community, and escapism. At its heart is the story of a young boy growing up with the cinema as his lifelong companion. The narrative is brought to life by Zimmer's evocative score, blending Hollywood-style orchestration with 90s nostalgia and Arabic musical elements. As part of Vox's broader 'experience-first' strategy to reconnect with audiences, Create Production oversaw the entire creative process, from script development to full-scale production across eight regional markets. The campaign produced more than 85 assets in a variety of languages, formats, and platforms, ranging from IMAX screens to social media reels. Create also led localisation efforts across four languages and dialects, ensuring cultural resonance throughout the region. Muhammad Ashraf, Senior Producer at Create Production, said: 'Working alongside the Vox Cinemas team to develop a film worthy of Hans Zimmer's signature sound was a true privilege. We set out to craft a narrative that celebrates Vox's magic and elevates the region's sonic identity.' The brand film is currently screening in Vox Cinemas across the Middle East, with additional distribution on digital platforms, social media, and out-of-home advertising. The custom sonic branding developed for the campaign will continue to roll out throughout 2025, becoming an integral part of the Vox experience—from cinema lobbies to customer service interactions. This project adds to Create Production's portfolio of landmark regional campaigns, continuing its track record of high-profile collaborations, including previous work with Zimmer and large-scale productions across the Middle East.
