How topless car thieves met their match against the defence force officer in pyjamas and slippers
It was a bad day at the office for these five men, who lived to tell the embarrassing tale.
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has finally explained how five alleged car thieves ended up topless and lying on the ground defenceless against several officers last weekend.
According to the SANDF, the men met their embarrassing fate on Sunday after allegedly stealing a vehicle near the Tek Base, a military facility in Tshwane.
Videos and pictures circulating on social media show them topless and lying on the ground as they are questioned by SANDF officials after being caught.

An official in pyjamas and slippers, seemingly furious, questions the alleged car thieves about their motive for stealing cars.
'How do you know that house? There's no need for you to steal cars,' he tells one of the suspects, who moves towards him as he answers his questions.
The suspect is warned to stop approaching the SANDF official, who tells his colleagues to leave him be.
'Don't worry, let him move, I will show him his a**,' says the official.
The suspect being questioned could offer no explanation for his alleged criminal activities.

He explained that he stole a car from one of the houses there because there was no one home.
'This is what we do, we steal cars,' he says.

According to the SANDF, the five suspects are believed to be involved in a criminal syndicate targeting civilian vehicles in and around military establishments.
The suspects from Mamelodi were caught using the vicinity of Tek Base as a sanctuary for their illegal operations.
On Sunday, members of Trek Base acted on intelligence and reports from military police personnel. The coordination between the South African Police Service (Saps) and military police led to the arrest of the five suspects.

A white Toyota Fortuner, suspected to be stolen, was discovered near the Engineering Formation.
The suspects were also found in possession of a second vehicle, a white Kia with falsified licence plates, which raised further suspicions of an organised illegal vehicle syndicate.
They have been detained at the Lyttelton police station.
'The soldiers who attended and managed the scene with professionalism and bravery are a true embodiment of the SANDF discipline and duty calling,' the SANDF said.
'The SANDF reiterates that military bases are secure and protected zones. Any civilian found within or near military facilities engaging in criminal conduct will face the full might of the law. There is zero tolerance for unlawful activity within our military bases.
'The SANDF remains committed to upholding law, order and the protection of both state and civilian property. Our bases are sanctuaries of national security, not safe harbours for criminals.'

'If sentiments from residents are anything to go by, police in KwaZulu-Natal are on the right track to deliver the service that they need.' He said during the 2024/2025 financial year, various operations across the province led to the arrest of 144,019 suspects for various crime categories. 'The excellence that we are celebrating tonight is for those members who collectively and individually ensured that 5,016 firearms and over 51,000 rounds of ammunition were removed from the streets.' He said officers also successfully shut down 20,362 illegal shebeens in the province, which prevented murders, rapes, and assaults from happening. Next Stay Close ✕ According to Mkhwanazi, what was also being celebrated was officers' exceptional use of their resources and training to safeguard themselves, colleagues, and the public while pursuing dangerous armed criminals. He highlighted that excellent police and community partnership will indeed isolate criminals and create safer communities. 'Excellent detective work by our officers deserves to be celebrated. It takes a focused and dedicated investigating officer to put pieces together until a trail of clues emerges,' he said. Mkhwanazi stated that it was brilliant investigative work by detectives who traced the suspects who shot a South African Revenue Service advocate last year at a hotel in Umhlanga. 'During the year under review, our detectives secured a total of 125 life imprisonment sentences and a total of 1,114 years in jail for 1,239 accused who were found guilty on cases of murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and rape,' he said. He noted that KwaZulu-Natal achieved 95% in the summative physical assessment, which is the highest in the country, as well as a firearm competency status of 98%. However, Mkhwanazi said between April 2024 and March 2025, KZN lost six police officers in the line of duty. He said four officers were shot and killed by criminals when they either responded to a robbery in progress or attended to an active crime scene. 'Police in KwaZulu-Natal are policing over 12.4 million counted citizens with just over 19,600 police officers. The killing of one police officer leaves so many community members vulnerable.' General Mkhwanazi congratulated the winners and emphasised that all the nominees deserve to be recognised. 'You are all winners, but only one will ascend this stage and represent you all,' he stated. His success in securing convictions, including over 184 years of imprisonment for crimes like murder and armed robbery within a single year, was acknowledged by all 11 district commissioners, three deputy provincial commissioners, and the provincial commissioner. Sergeant Mhlongo solved the kidnapping and murder of a 21-year-old woman last seen in Umhlanga on Christmas Day 2024. He identified her manager as the suspect, who killed her at his home in Inanda and buried her in a shallow grave, according to Netshiunda. Mpumalanga Police launch manhunt after on-duty cop gunned down
Mpumalanga police launched a manhunt for suspects following the fatal shooting of an on-duty police officer in Phakane, Pienaar, on Friday. Const Donald Mathebula, 34, was found inside his private vehicle in uniform when police arrived at the scene. He was rushed to the hospital, and he was declared dead on arrival. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lt-Col Jabu Ndubane said preliminary investigations suggested the deceased stopped at a tuckshop when three suspects armed with firearms and wearing balaclavas approached and shot him. 'The member drove his vehicle in an attempt to flee. He was shot, the vehicle lost control, hit a tree, and the car came to a standstill, and nothing was taken. 'The vehicle had bullet holes on the rear side and the right side of the window. The three suspects fled the scene,' said Ndubane. She said the deceased was identified as Constable Donald Mathebula, who was stationed at Pienaar police station, serving under the visible policing unit. He had served the South African Police Service for ten years. 'It is believed Mathebula was ambushed and fatally shot by the suspects while visiting the area. The motive of the attack is not known yet, and police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing' . Acting provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Maj-Gen Zeph Mkhwanazi, has mobilised a 72-hour activation plan to ensure that all necessary resources are deployed to trace and arrest the perpetrators Police have asked anyone with information that could assist in the arrest of the suspects to contact the nearest police station. Tip-offs can also be reported anonymously via crime stop number on 08600 10111 or through the MYSAPS App. Meanwhile, Mpumalanga MEC for community safety, security, and liaison, Jackie Macie, called members of the public who have any clues on the suspects' whereabouts to come forward and report to the police. Macie said police should spare no effort in ensuring that the suspects are swiftly brought to book. 'In honouring the memory of the deceased and many other members who have lost their lives to criminals, the police must urgently arrest the suspects. Members must remain relentless in their efforts to serve and protect communities. 'They should not be deterred by attacks on their colleagues. Those who attack law enforcement officers, whether on or off duty, are attacking the state and therefore such individuals must be harshly punished,' said Macie.

DA demands answers after top crime boss vanishes amid R45 million property scandal
Major-General Philani Lushaba, the Chief Financial Officer of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence unit, has allegedly vanished just as authorities were preparing to question him about his involvement in financial misconduct linked to properties valued at over R45 million. According to the Democratic Alliance (DA) member of Parliament, Dianne Kohler Barnard, Lushaba failed to report for duty on the morning of 6 June. Barnard said the alleged disappearance comes just as the National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) Investigating Directorate sought to question him, reportedly over a multi-million Rand property scandal. At the heart of the scandal, are two high-value acquisitions: a luxury boutique hotel in Pretoria North, purchased for R22.7 million, and a commercial property in Berea, Durban, acquired for R22.8 million.
