Five MLB players who shouldn't have made All-Star team
It's a yearly tradition when the All-Star rosters are released — everyone points to who was left off. This year there were plenty of snubs: Juan Soto, Seiya Suzuki, Joe Ryan, and Cristopher Sanchez, among others. So who shouldn't have made the 2025 All-Star team? We take a look at the top five.

Ronald Acuna Jr.

Ronald Acuña Jr. has been on a tear since coming back from his second major ACL injury that cost him most of 2024. The Atlanta Braves right fielder is hitting .331/.450/.561 with a 182 OPS+ and nine home runs in 40 games since returning May 23. Those are great numbers, but he's missed 49 games this season. His starting spot should've gone to someone who has played the full season. The fans got this one wrong.
Julio Rodriguez

Julio Rodríguez is one of the best defensive center fielders in the game, but he's been below average at the plate this season. The Seattle Mariners star has a .695 OPS and 103 OPS+, with just 11 home runs while hitting .247. Those numbers are down from his career marks of .272 average, .782 OPS and 126 OPS+.

Javier Baez

Javier Báez has been one of the top feel-good stories in baseball. He resurrected his career in his fourth season with the first-place Detroit Tigers, and because of that, the fans voted him to start for the AL squad. However, when you look at his numbers compared to other outfielders, they fall short. His .769 OPS would be tied for 17th among AL outfielders, while his 10 home runs would be tied for 19th.
MacKenzie Gore

Washington Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore is a good pitcher, ranking third in the NL in strikeouts. But there's a strong case that Philadelphia Phillies starter Cristopher Sanchez should've been chosen over Gore. Sanchez is tied for seventh in the NL in strikeouts and leads Gore in ERA (2.59 to 3.11), WHIP (1.13 to 1.20), batting average allowed (.229 to .237), ERA+ (164 to 129) and FIP (2.75 to 3.01).

Yusei Kikuchi

Because MLB requires every team be represented at the All-Star game, it can cause some worthy players to be snubbed. The Los Angeles Angels' lone selection in pitcher Yusei Kikuchi helped push Minnesota Twins starter Joe Ryan out. Kikuchi is having a solid season for the surprising Angels, with a 3.02 ERA and 139 ERA+, but Ryan is having a superior year. Ryan has a better ERA (2.76) and ERA+ (152), and also tops Kikuchi in bWAR (3.9 to 3.0), strikeouts (116 to 110), FIP (3.25 to 3.86), WHIP (0.891 to 1.379) and walks (21 to 48).

Zach Neto hits 2 homers, Angels overcome Shohei Ohtani's 42nd HR for a 7-4 win over the Dodgers
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Zach Neto hit his eighth leadoff home run of the season and added another homer in the sixth, and the Los Angeles Angels overcame Shohei Ohtani's 42nd homer during an eighth-inning rally in their 7-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. Mike Trout had a two-run single and Yoán Moncada drove in two runs for the Angels, who are improbably 4-0 in the Freeway Series this season. The defending World Series champion Dodgers' lead over San Diego in the NL West also slipped to just one game for the first time since June 14 with the Padres' win over San Francisco. The Dodgers trailed 7-0 before Ohtani homered in his third straight game, driving a solo shot to right in the eighth inning. Ohtani has a 10-game hitting streak in August, and he has four homers among his nine hits in the Dodgers' last five games. Max Muncy followed with a three-run homer to slash the Angels' big lead, but Connor Brogdon ended the eighth before Kenley Jansen earned his 22nd save. Angels right fielder Gustavo Campero got injured while chasing Muncy's drive into the short porch. He was taken off the field on a cart. Colson Montgomery hits his 10th home run — all since the All-Star break — in Chicago White Sox loss
Chicago White Sox shortstop Colson Montgomery crushed another home run. But Spencer Torkelson hit a go-ahead solo home run off the left-field foul pole in the ninth inning and the Detroit Tigers held on to defeat the Sox 2-1 on Monday in front of 16,054 at Rate Field. The game featured a 63-minute rain delay during the top of the ninth. Montgomery homered for the second straight game. His liner to right leading off the fifth just remained fair for a game-tying home run. 'I feel great,' Montgomery said. 'I just feel like each day is a new opportunity for something to happen. Some nights aren't your night and some nights are. I feel like in this game, what I'm learning now, you have to try to stay as consistent as you can and as neutral as you can. 'You can't get too caught up in the highs and the lows. Every single night you are going to get your other team's best. It's business and you are trying to win games. I feel good.' He has 10 home runs, all since the All-Star break. 'I wouldn't really say I'm surprised by any of it,' Montgomery said. 'You just never know what's really going to happen until you get here in the big leagues and you face pitching. I'm pretty happy with how things are going right now. It just comes down to what me, (hitting coach) Marcus (Thames) and (assistant hitting coach) Joel (McKeithan) are doing in the cage every single day. Staying consistent in my routines. 'The biggest thing is not trying to do too much.' What Chicago White Sox manager Will Venable is focusing on during the final 2 months of the seasonThe Sox were in position to draw even thanks to solid contributions from the bullpen. 'As far as today, those guys did an outstanding job and kept us in the game,' Venable said of the relief work. 'We couldn't muster anything offensively and they gave us a chance there throughout the game. We're in a tough spot bullpen-wise, we needed to get outs and they did that tonight.' Montgomery robbed Wenceel Pérez of a single, leaping to make a catch to begin the ninth. '(Reliever Brandon) Eisert, he's pitching his butt off,' Montgomery said. 'It was a late situation in the game, tried to stop their momentum and didn't really see it go in my glove. Just went in my glove.' Torkelson then hit a 1-0 fastball from Eisert for the go-ahead home run. The game was paused because of rain with two outs in the top of the ninth. It concluded with Cam Booser throwing one strike in the top of the ninth for a strikeout and then the Sox getting retired in order on a strikeout and two grounders in the bottom of the ninth. While the Sox came up short, they continued to see Montgomery's progression. He is the third rookie in Sox history to hit 10 home runs over his first 32 career games, joining José Abreu in 2014 (12) and Zeke Bonura in 1934 (10). 'He continues to have good at-bats and put himself in a really good position to hit the ball hard,' Venable said. 'It seems like every day he's doing something positive at the plate. Certainly doing positive things defensively. Really nice to see a young guy go out there and perform like he's performing. 'Just continues to throw out great performances night after night.'
