Nezza sang U.S. national anthem in Spanish after the Dodgers requested it in English
Los Angeles has been at the center of massive protests the past week in response to ICE's enforcement tactics and the deployment of U.S troops to the downtown federal building. And over at Dodger Stadium, the singer, Nezza, did her part to show support to the Latino community.
It took disregarding a Dodgers employee to do so.
Nezza was the anthem singer for Saturday's game against the Giants, and she performed 'El Pendón Estrellado' — the Spanish version of the "Star-Spangled Banner."
The Spanish rendition of the anthem — which is an officially commissioned version — was greeted to massive applause at Dodger Stadium. But Nezza would later show that the Dodgers asked her to perform in English just before she took the field.
She wrote on Instagram:
Para mi gente ❤️ I stand with you. Yesterday was easily one of the scariest days of my life. I sang 'El Pendon Estrellado' the OFFICIAL Spanish star spangled banner (commissioned by President Roosevelt) at the Dodgers game after being told I couldn't. And I'm so proud that I did. Stay safe. Stay strong. I love you.
The Dodgers had not commented about the protests over the past week. And according to The Athletic, the Dodgers declined to comment about Nezza's performance and the request to sing in English.

Trump orders deportation drive targeting Democratic cities

US President Donald Trump on Sunday directed federal authorities to ramp up deportation efforts in Democratic-led cities, doubling down on a politicized anti-immigration drive after major protests in Los Angeles. "We must expand efforts to detain and deport Illegal Aliens in America's largest Cities, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, where Millions upon Millions of Illegal Aliens reside," Trump said on his Truth Social platform. "These, and other such Cities, are the core of the Democrat Power Center," he claimed, citing debunked right-wing conspiracy theories that undocumented immigrants are voting in US elections in significant numbers. Trump has made deporting undocumented immigrants a key priority for his second term, after successfully campaigning against an alleged "invasion" by criminals. Raids by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency in Los Angeles sparked unruly protests, prompting Trump last week to deploy 4,000 National Guards and 700 Marines, against the wishes of local and state authorities. California has sued to regain control of the National Guardsmen from Trump, arguing he overstepped his authority. That suit is working its way through federal court. In a long screed on Truth Social Sunday, the Republican president charged that "every day, the Brave Men and Women of ICE are subjected to violence, harassment, and even threats from Radical Democrat Politicians." But, he insisted, "nothing will stop us from executing our mission... ICE Officers are herewith ordered ... to do all in their power to achieve the very important goal of delivering the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History." Trump insisted that "Radical Left Democrats are sick of mind, hate our Country, and actually want to destroy our Inner Cities — And they are doing a good job of it!" "There is something wrong with them," he said, listing a litany of grievances, including charges that Democrats "believe in Open Borders, Transgender for Everybody, and Men playing in Women's Sports." That, he said, was why he wanted ICE and other law enforcement agencies "to FOCUS on our crime ridden and deadly Inner Cities." Doubling down on his characteristic bluster, Trump seemed to compare migration to the United States with weapons of mass destruction. He said he had directed his entire administration "to put every resource possible behind this effort, and reverse the tide of Mass Destruction Migration that has turned once Idyllic Towns into scenes of Third World Dystopia." With his typical divisive rhetoric, Trump said he wanted "our Brave Officers to know that REAL Americans are cheering you on every day." "To ICE, FBI, DEA, ATF, the Patriots at Pentagon and the State Department, you have my unwavering support. Now go, GET THE JOB DONE!" he wrote. nl/des

San Francisco protesters block entrance to unmarked building amid fears of ICE trap

Protesters in San Francisco spent the day blocking the entrance to an unmarked building in the South of Market area. Immigrants had been told to report there in what some believed was a trap by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to capture people for deportation. Over the weekend, a number of undocumented immigrants were sent a mysterious text message telling them to report to an unmarked building on Tehama Street on Saturday or Sunday. It warned that not showing up would be considered an "infraction." "And we don't know why," said attorney Nancy Hormachea with the National Lawyers Guild. "Some of them have been reporting regularly before, but there was some concern that people might be detained under some of the new administration's policies." A group of protesters blocked the entrances to the street and marched in front of the door, and lawyers were present to warn immigrants about what could be waiting for them. "We can't say for sure, but people here thought that they were being trapped because some of them have pending court cases," Hormachea said. "They have shown up for all of their hearings. Many have filed for political asylum and they showed up here with their children, as well, yesterday." "In other cities, we've heard information about potential detainments or activity around ICE in these offices. So, we just shut down the office entirely from 7 a.m. yesterday until 4 p.m. when they close. And the same thing today," said protest organizer Luna Osleger Montañez. The building at 478 Tehama St. houses a private subcontractor for the Intensive Supervision Appearance Program, or ISAP, which keeps tabs on people who have been previously detained and released by ICE. The protesters thought the purpose of the weekend order, if not to arrest people, was to scare them into not appearing for future court hearings. "Including new tactics like this, which really are unprecedented," said Osleger Montañez, "where on a weekend, community members are asked to go to an office that's not an ICE office for a check-in that they don't have a lot of information about, with fear of detainment if they don't go. That's really the reason we chose to shut it down all weekend from the beginning." A man named Brian S. lives in the South of Market area and said he had no idea that the building was involved with immigration enforcement. "You know, the cruelty is part of the purpose of what they're trying to do," he said. "So, it's terrifying, to be honest with you. It's terrifying." Brian thought the administration may be intentionally targeting San Francisco as a way of picking a fight. He said the city supports its immigrant community and knows how to mobilize quickly in support of them. "The response needs to be immediate," he said. "If this would have worked, they would have done more of it." The organizers said ICE is frequently shifting its tactics and that the rapid response group has responded to six emergency actions in just the past week and a half. There was no indication that people were being called to the location after the weekend, but the activists promise that if they are, they'll be back. CBS News Bay Area reached out to ICE for a comment on the text message and protest, and did not hear back before publication.

Trump orders ICE to step up deportation efforts in Democrat-run cities

President Trump has ordered Immigration and Customs Enforcement to "expand efforts to detain and deport" undocumented immigrants in Democratic-run cities. The big picture: Trump's targeting of Democrat-run cities comes as California's Democratic leaders challenge him in the courts over his deployment of the state National Guard and U.S. Marines to ICE protests in Los Angeles — one of the cities he singled out in Sunday's Truth Social post. It builds on the president's April order directing federal agencies to document " sanctuary cities" that are not complying with his immigration agenda, when the White House said those that failed to do so "may lose federal funding" — prompting a coalition of 20 Democratic attorneys general to file lawsuits against the administration. And follows top Trump aide Stephen Miller and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem demanding last month that ICE seek to arrest 3,000 people a day — triple what agents were arresting in the early days of the second administration. Driving the news: Trump wrote he's ordering ICE officers via Truth Social to "do all in their power to achieve the very important goal of delivering the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History." To achieve this, Trump wrote "we must expand efforts to detain and deport Illegal Aliens in America's largest Cities, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, where Millions upon Millions of Illegal Aliens reside." He added that these and other cities were the "core of the Democrat Power Center" as he echoed baseless claims he made during the 2024 presidential election about Democrats using undocumented immigrants to "cheat in Elections," among other allegations that he did not provide evidence on.
