Air Canada flight attendants organize national action to protest working conditions

On Monday, August 11 th , Air Canada flight attendants, represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), will hold a simultaneous action at airports in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary, to raise awareness among Canadians about ongoing issues related to their working conditions. Flight attendants are asking Air Canada to recognize the key elements of the negotiation, including non-working hours and poverty wages that are no longer consistent with the economic reality of 2025.
This mobilization aims to remind the public that flight attendants play a crucial role in aircraft safety, in addition to providing quality service and ensuring the smooth operation of flights across the country.
'We're heading into an intense weekend of bargaining, with strong support from our members. The standard simply can't be maintained, because it's no longer acceptable,' says Wesley Lesosky, president of the Air Canada component of CUPE.

Air Canada flight attendants intend to strike this weekend, union says
The union representing Air Canada's flight attendants has signalled that its members intend to go on strike this weekend, paving the way for workers to walk off the job as early as Saturday morning. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) gave the carrier a requisite 72-hour notice after the two sides reached an "impasse" in negotiations. The earliest their more than 10,000 workers can walk off the job is on Saturday at 12:58 a.m. ET. CUPE representatives say that in response to their strike action, Air Canada has issued a notice of lockout starting at 1:30 a.m. ET on Saturday. "We do hope that Air Canada will come to some form of rationale and show up at the table and truly engage us in bargaining the final pieces of this," said Wesley Lesosky, president of CUPE Air Canada Component. The two sides have been negotiating a new collective agreement since March, going over key issues like wages, work rules and unpaid hours. Air Canada said late Tuesday afternoon that the two sides were far apart in negotiations. What's next? CBC News reported earlier on Tuesday that CUPE had declined a proposal by Air Canada to resolve the talks through binding interest arbitration, and that both the union and the airline were back to reviewing each others' proposals. That work went on past midnight on Tuesday, but resulted in the union serving strike notice almost an hour later. "The employer rejected our final pass ... that we gave them on some monetary issues. We wanted to thoroughly review it, but really wanted the members to still be in the forefront of that decision. So it took a lot of discussion," said Lesosky. WATCH | The latest on the negotiations before the strike was called: Air Canada had said that any passengers booked to travel between Aug. 15 and Aug. 18 can change their flight if desired, provided that it was purchased no later than Aug. 13. The airline was also going to allow these passengers to change their flights, for free, to another date between Aug. 21 and Sept. 12. "If your flight is cancelled, we will do our very best to rebook you on the first available flight, exploring options with over 120 international and domestic carriers," the airline said on its website. "As we are in peak summer travel season, we know that space will still be very limited. If your travel is disrupted, you can always choose a refund." CBC News has reached out to Air Canada to confirm the lockout notice and for the company's latest plan for passengers who might be affected. "On behalf of the flight attendants, obviously we are sorry and empathetic towards this, but we also need to bargain a collective agreement. And unfortunately, this was the next stage in the process," said Lesosky. "I would assume that we're going to start seeing kind of their ramp down [on Wednesday]. I would certainly hope that they're not going to leave our members stranded. They're obviously working to those destinations and should be brought back."

Windsor gets $5.2 million from province for meeting housing targets
Windsor is getting $5.2 million from the Ontario government for meeting, and blowing past, its 2024 housing targets under the province's Building Faster Fund. Ontario Premier Doug Ford joined Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens to make the announcement Tuesday at Windsor City Hall. The city broke ground on 2,306 new homes in 2024, the province said in a news release issued Tuesday; that's 213 per cent of its target for the year. "I'm delighted to announce that … the City of Windsor has done an incredible job," Ford said. "Matter of fact, I have to tell you, I've never seen anyone achieving 213 per cent. So you're the Ontario champs." The Municipality of Chatham-Kent achieved 644 per cent of its 2023 goal and nearly half of its 10-year pledge that year. Windsor missed its target in 2023, but it also didn't report all of its housing starts to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation because of an error. Different methods of counting housing starts Those missed starts were added to the 2024 total, helping Windsor far exceed this year's target. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation data lists 2,157 housing starts in Windsor in 2024, about 150 fewer than the province's number. But the provincial numbers include additional builds, such as long-term care beds and student housing. Asked by reporters Tuesday about the appropriateness of including those units when they aren't providing homes for families looking for housing, Ford defended the move. "A lot of these people are leaving their homes, leaving their condos, opening it up," he said. The province's two-year-old Building Faster Fund is a three-year, $1.2 billion program that is designed to encourage municipalities to speed up municipal approval processes and get more homes built faster, the province said. Municipalities that achieve 80 per cent or more of their targets are rewarded with funding for infrastructure such as roads, bridges and culverts to support new home construction. "Windsor has been identified as one of the most important and fastest growing communities to watch in Ontario and in all of Canada," Dilkens said. "Much of that unprecedented growth and development is closely linked to the vital support that we continue to receive from Premier Ford and the provincial government." Ford spoke to reporters after the funding announcement about a range of issues affecting the Windsor-Essex area, including concerns about the impact of U.S. tariffs on the local economy and the auto sector. Ford addresses tariffs, local economy The premier will meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday, he said, and plans to push for lower corporate tax rates and a two-year pause on HST on new home sales. He also expressed his desire to see the Bank of Canada lower interest rates. Asked by CBC about last month's Canadian Federation of Independent Business report that found that tariff relief programs launched by Ontario weren't working for small or medium-sized businesses, Ford said his government plans to announce more funding starting Wednesday. "We're rolling out the money, and I won't hesitate to keep rolling it out because I know we're going to get through this and we're going to come out stronger than ever before," he said. Ford is also pushing to onshore manufacturing of steel and aluminum products in response to American tariffs, he said.
