Custom Consoles MDesk-Technical HA workstation to make IBC debut

Broadcast Pro24-07-2025
The MDesk-Technical HA features sturdy aluminium legs, high-strength CDF build, LED lighting, cable trays with ports and under-desk power sockets for equipment.
Custom Consoles will promote its full range of broadcast control room and production suite furniture at IBC 2025, Amsterdam, 12-15 September. The company has nearly three decades of experience in developing and producing technical control furniture for a customer base which includes television and radio channels as well as media production service providers in Britain, mainland Europe and around the world.
Making its first IBC appearance will be the MDesk-Technical HA height-adjustable workstation. 'M-Desk Technical is an industry-proven design developed for use in control rooms and related locations where there is no requirement to house large equipment within the body of the desk,' commented Gary Fuller, sales manager. 'MDesk-Technical HA has an electrically motorised desktop which can be raised or lowered between 66 and 125 cm above floor level. Operators can choose their preferred height or transition between seated and standing work modes. Total lifting capacity is 400 kg, meeting practically any control room or postproduction suite requirements.'
The MDesk-Technical HA feature set includes robust extruded aluminium legs, high-strength CDF construction, LED lighting at the front and sides and in the footwell, desktop cable trays feeding work-surface cable ports, plus under-side power sockets for desktop equipment. Available options include personal or PC storage, a wide choice of worktop surface finishes, freestanding 19 inch desktop pods and desktop induction pads to charge mobile devices.
Also on Custom Consoles' IBC stand will be a latest-generation desk in the Modular-R series. 'One of the most successful product ranges in our entire portfolio, Module-R allows customers to select the exact features needed for their current workflow,' added Neil Reed, Managing Director. 'The desks are also highly futureproof as they can be modified or extended easily to allow changes in location, staff numbers or workflow.'
Module-R elements include single-bay, dual-bay and triple-bay desk sections with front or rear access, work surfaces in matching widths, corner desk sections with integral worktops, slide-out keyboard drawers, equipment pods, storage pedestals and equipment bays. Also available is Module-R Lite, a space-saving version with a front-to-back depth of only 95 cm compared with the 120 cm of Module-R.
Complementing Custom Consoles' IBC 2025 stand will be an example of the MediaWall video and audio monitor support frame system which offers the same combination of structural rigidity and operational versatility as Module-R desks. MediaWall is fully adjustable to ensure optimal sight lines. Individual or multiple frames can be used in self-supporting mode or coupled directly to the studio wall. Flat-screen video displays of practically any size can be accommodated in almost any configuration. Video display screens can be positioned so that the edges meet exactly to form a continuous horizontal display limited only by the monitor panel bezel. Monitor signal and power cables are fully concealed and can enter or leave the structure at any desired point. Enhancements in the latest version include narrower front-to-back depth, reduced from 60 to 50 cm.

Google to reduce AI data centre energy consumption

Google has partnered up with two US electricity companies to help reduce the energy consumption of its AI data centre during spikes in demand. The rapid rise of generative AI is putting a strain on the US electrical grid as companies such as Google, OpenAI, Microsoft and xAI require massive amounts of power to train their models. It stated the agreements with Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) and Tennessee Power Authority mark the first time Google is delivering data centre demand response, by temporarily reducing workloads during periods of high usage. 'It allows large electricity loads like data centres to be interconnected more quickly, helps reduce the need to build new transmission and power plants, and helps grid operators more effectively and efficiently manage power grids', Michael Terrell, Head of Advanced Energy for Google explained in a blog post. The tech giant released its tenth annual environmental report in June, which stated the company reduced its data centre energy emissions by 12 per cent. While it is early days for Google's demand response programme, Terrell noted flexible demand is an important piece of its sustainability portfolio. 'It can be deployed quickly, helping bridge the gap between short-term load growth and long-term clean energy solutions, and delivers immediate benefits'. R&D centre of OIA-backed US tech venture planned in Oman

MUSCAT: US-based climate innovation tech venture Sense, known for its leadership in smart energy solutions, will establish a Research & Development (R&D) facility in Oman to support the deployment of its technology in the Sultanate of Oman. According to the Oman Investment Authority (OIA)—an investor in the Massachusetts-headquartered firm—the R&D facility is part of a broader initiative to localise Sense's technology for tracking energy consumption in the country. In August 2019, IDO Investments, the tech-focused arm of OIA, joined a group of leading international investors in a funding round for Sense. The US firm develops machine-learning-powered hardware and software that monitor household energy consumption and device usage in real time—helping users reduce energy waste. Commenting on its strategy to support the localisation of Sense's smart energy solutions, OIA stated: 'Sense conducted field trials in Oman to optimise the technology's performance and adapt it to local conditions. The company expanded its partnerships with local energy providers to enhance the national electricity grid's efficiency and strengthen its ability to meet growing energy demand. This partnership paves the way for establishing a research and development center in Oman, supporting the national economy and creating new job opportunities for Omani citizens.' A leader in climate-tech innovation, Sense's groundbreaking direct-to-consumer Home Energy Monitor initially reached over 100,000 homes in the US. The company has since expanded its reach by embedding its technology into smart meters—providing electricity providers with software that enhances grid management and customer engagement. Sense says its mission is to reduce global carbon emissions by transforming the relationship between people, homes, and the electric grid. To this end, it partners with meter manufacturers to offer utilities software that supports their electrification goals by making the grid more scalable and resilient. Its consumer app empowers users to make smarter energy decisions, lower electricity bills, and reduce their carbon footprint. In Oman, smart meters are playing a key role in helping rationalise electricity consumption by enabling modern digital infrastructure and giving consumers real-time access to their energy usage. Supplanting analog meters—prone to faults and billing errors—smart meters improve billing accuracy, collection efficiency, and customer satisfaction. With access to ongoing consumption trends, consumers can make informed decisions to reduce household electricity use. At the national level, utilities gain access to real-time data that enables better detection of losses, tampering, and power quality issues, while reducing operational costs and improving usage planning. Additionally, the underlying Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) supports time-of-day pricing and demand-response programs, encouraging consumption outside of peak periods. The Authority for Public Services Regulation (APRS) is overseeing the National Smart Meter Programme, which targets the installation of approximately 1.2 million smart meters by the end of 2025.
