All eyes on Damian Willemse after last wearing Springboks' jersey during 2023 victory parade

The last time South Africans saw Damian Willemse in a Springbok jersey was during the early part of the 2023 Rugby World Cup victory parade through the streets of South Africa.
Nobody could get Willemse out of the kit he wore with much distinction during that World Cup-final win over the All Blacks. It was probably only after the stench of the kit got to the players on the bus that it decided he needed a fresh outfit.
Unfortunately, Willemse hasn't worn the Springboks jersey since sustaining a couple of injuries that kept him out of the entire 2024 international season. The jersey he cherishes so much was taken away from him.
A lot has changed since Damian Willemse last wore the No 15 jersey, as the Sharks' Aphelele Fassi having a breakout 2024 to put him top of the list as far as the fullback berth is concerned. Veteran Willie le Roux is also still going strong and is on the cusp of his 100th Test in the green and gold.

Fassi made eight starts at fullback in Willemse's absence in 2024 after seemingly leapfrogging Le Roux as the Boks first-choice No 15.
'The Weekend Special' - a nickname Fassi earned because his surname is similar to South Africa's music legend Brenda Fassie - played in most of the big matches for the Boks. He faced the All Blacks in Johannesburg, Argentina in the Rugby Championship decider in Mbombela and featured in the big November Test against England at Twickenham.
Fassi also started in the season opener against the Barbarians as Willemse was still serving a suspension for a dangerous tackle while playing for the Stormers in a United Rugby Championship match.
But this weekend, against Italy at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, Willemse will finally feature again in a Bok jersey after almost 20 months.
Willemse certainly knows he is going to be in the spotlight after Fassi's bright performances. But the Strand-born player is keen to make up for lost time.
'I'm looking forward to it, very excited. Lots of nerves as well, it's my first Test match in a couple of years since the World Cup final,' Willemse told SuperSport TV this week ahead of the Italy clash.
'A lot has changed, especially at the international level. The rest of the boys who have played in the position have done an excellent job. They have set the standard.
'For me, coming in, I know there will be a lot of eyes on me. But I'm just focussed on my primary job. Hopefully I can have a good game.'
Fassi has proven to be a lethal counter-attacking player in the new era of the Boks' offensive play. He cut the line beautifully last season, while he showed off his attacking kicks in the wet against the BaaBaas.
But Willemse will also welcome the Boks' new style of play as a lethal runner from the back himself. The Stormers man has wonderful anticipation and can also slip in flyhalf to distribute when needed.

Baby Boks triumph over England in thrilling World U20 Championship match
Junior Springbok scrumhalf Haashim Pead feeds one of the scrums against Australia. He was a constant thorn in the flesh of England on Friday night as the Baby Boks beat the defending champions 32-22. The Junior Springboks started slowly in their World Rugby U2O Championship pool match against champions England in Rovigo, Italy on Friday night, before eventually settling into their stride and running out 32-22 winners. The South African youngsters had no answers to an early England onslaught that yielded two tries, the first from fullback Josh Bellamy, who converted his own try, and the second from Connor Treacey (14-0). But SA hit back with a spectacular score from the hot-stepping Cheswell Jooste, who burst through the England defensive line after a set move in midfield, and blew past a number of defenders to score. Jooste was a menace whenever he touched the ball. Flyhalf Vusi Moyo kicked the conversion to make the score 12-7. The Baby Boks were suddenly full of running, with scrumhalf Haashim Pead, who was pulling strings for SA at scrumhalf, starting and finishing an attacking move down the right wing for SA's second try. England were then gifted a try off a South African mistake close to their try line (19-12). More silky touches and pace to burn by the SA backs put fullback Gilermo Mentoe over for the third SA try. Centre Cupido showed great vision and timing in the pass. Moyo landed the conversion to draw SA level (19-19).

Junior Boks beat England at U20 Championship

Picture:The Junior Springboks overturned an early 14-point deficit to claim a bonus-point win against England at the World Rugby U20 Championship in Rovigo on Friday. The 32-22 triumph took South Africa to the top of Pool A with 10 points. England are second on five points, along with third-placed Australia, who beat winless Scotland 34-24 earlier in the day. The final round of pool matches take place on Wednesday, with the Junior Boks up against Scotland (3.30pm SA time) and England taking on Australia (6pm). Both teams came into this match on the back of big opening wins, with South Africa smashing Australia 73-17 and defending champions England hammering Scotland 56-19. But it was England who carried on from where they left off last Sunday, with tries to scrumhalf Jonny Weimann and flanker Connor Treacy giving them a 14-0 lead after 10 minutes. Junior Boks fight back The Junior Boks hit back with a brilliant try from Cheswill Jooste, who ran the perfect angle off his wing to split the defence of England, who had sloppily conceded a scrum after knocking on from a quick penalty tap. Shortly after, another dazzling Jooste run resulted in a try to scrumhalf Hassiem Pead that reduced the deficit to two. England wing Jack Bracken then capitalised on a risky in-field pass from Junior Boks replacement Jaco Williams to score. But Williams made amends by putting fullback Gilermo Mentoe over for a try that flyhalf Vusi Moyo converted to levelled the scores. England took a 22-19 lead into the break after a penalty goal from No 10 Ben Coen, but two from Moyo – the second from 55m – put the Junior Boks in front for the first time. Pead then scored an outstanding individual try from just outside his 22, converted by Moyo, to extend the lead to 10.
