Sherlock and Homes: Benedict Cumberbatch and Ed Miliband's wife battle plans for £5.6million six storey block of flats near their north London properties
The Oscar-nominated actor is among residents in Dartmouth Park urging Camden Council to reject current proposals to transform an existing property called Lamorna - also including former Labour leader Ed Miliband's wife Dame Justine Thornton.
Cumberbatch, 48, raised concerns about the planned replacement of the two-storey, redbrick 1930s property currently standing in the district not far from Hampstead Heath.
The actor, whose films include The Imitation Game and The Power Of The Dog, has a home in the area with his theatre director wife Sophie Turner.
The scheme suggesting the current building be knocked down and replaced with a new six-storey block has been put forward by developers HGG London, the Camden New Journal reported.
Responses both in opposition and support have been sent to and shared online by the Labour-run Camden authority which is yet to make a decision on the proposals.
A report by BPS Chartered Surveyors for the council estimated the planned six new flats would be worth a total £5.6milion, ranging from £700,000 to £1.4million each.
Cumberbatch's submission states: 'Approval would set a precedent. For example, could I now demolish my property and replace it with flats and not require the same extensive planning approval?
'Or worse, the properties located behind this proposal could apply to be demolished with an even bigger property that this proposal is being submitted to form a mega development.'
He and his wife provided a letter arguing the new-look building would be out of keeping with Dartmouth Park's heritage.
They added: 'You only have to look at the adjacent properties to see the difference in style, materials, colours and feel.'
Firms behind the planning application describe it on their website as 'an exciting new residential development'.
Maddox Planning, which has been working alongside HGG London, said: 'We are thrilled to present this high-quality project that will deliver much-needed new homes in a well-connected and vibrant area.
'Our team is excited to share with you the innovative proposals we've designed to truly enhance the area, making it an even more attractive place to live.'
Among the other critics, however, has been lawyer Justine Thornton, who lives nearby with her husband, the Environment Secretary Ed Miliband.
She wrote: 'No objection to the principle of redevelopment, particularly in the context of the need for more housing. However, the design appears to be too tall, too bulky and too dense.
'This application presents another opportunity for the council to demonstrate its commitment to the provision of sympathetically designed housing by acknowledging the benefit of redevelopment whilst rejecting this design.'
Other responses sent in by fellow residents include comments such as: 'It must be more sustainable to renovate/extend Lamorna using the existing house and materials to upgrade it rather than the whole process of demolition and construction.'
Another contributor said: 'The proposal is oversized, bulky, pretentious and does not fit comfortably in the street scene.'
The council was also told in a different submission to its consultation process: 'I have no objections to the proposal to demolish Lamorna. It is an ugly modern house with no character.
'However, the new application to build a block of six flats plus basement is too bulky and will destroy the feel of the place.
'Grant permission if you must but restrict the new development to four floors at most to keep some sort of harmony with the neighbouring houses.'
Meanwhile, Camden councillor Camron Aref-Adib said: 'I would like to share my support for some of the concerns raised by residents regarding this planning application.
'My primary concerns relate to the potential loss of light and privacy for neighbouring homes and I ask that planners look closely at such risk, seeking the appropriate mitigations.
Another resident who has written in objection to the plans for is lawyer Dame Justine Thornton, pictured with her Labour politician husband Ed Miliband in May 2015
'I seek assurances that the developer will commit to the highest possible standards in minimising carbon emissions during demolition, and to high standards of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability in the proposed new building.'
Developers HGG London have said in their application to Camden Council: 'The development is an excellent opportunity to improve the economic, social, and environmental conditions of the area and it is in accordance with the development policies on housing.
'Notably, the development will deliver new housing on a brownfield site in an accessible location.'
The proposed new building would 'improve the local townscape' and provide 'much needed two bedroom and family housing provision', the company added.

Noel Gallagher admits he 'grossly underestimated what he was getting into' amid huge Oasis reunion tour with brother Liam as he says he wanted to run backstage five minutes after the first gig started
Noel Gallagher has opened up on how he felt on stage during the first Oasis reunion gigs, admitting he 'grossly underestimated what he was getting into.' The rocker, 58, recently reunited with younger brother Liam, 58, after 16 years for an epic 41-date world tour, which kicked off with a huge concert at Cardiff's Principality Stadium with over 70,000 fans in attendance. Speaking during his first interview since getting back with Oasis, Noel confessed that he had 'jelly legs' and felt like running backstage to his dressing room within five minutes of the opening show as he underestimated the scale of the event. Noel told talkSport radio to hosts Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent: 'I'm completely blown away, everyone is. It's difficult to put it into words, every night is the crowd's first night, so every one has that same energy to it. 'It's been truly amazing, I'm not usually short for words, but I can't really articulate it at the moment. For me personally, I grossly underestimated what I was getting into.' He went on: 'After about five minutes, I was thinking can we just go back to the dressing room and start this again. 'This is...I've done stadiums before, but my legs turned to jelly about halfway through the second song and I could have done with going back and taking a minute. 'It's been an amazing thing, it really is an amazing thing.' Meanwhile, the Don't Look Back In Anger hitmaker told how 'proud' he was of brother Liam and forgot how 'funny' he was after having buried their years-long feud. When asked if he'd been feeling emotional on tour amid the sibling's show of unity, Noel responded: 'We're not those kind of guys, it's great just be back with Bonehead and Liam and doing it again. I guess when it's all said and done, we'll sit and reflect on it, but it's great being back in a band with Liam. 'I forgot how funny he was.' He added of his brother: 'Liam's smashing it and I'm proud of him. 'Having been fronting a band for 16 years, I know how difficult that is and I couldn't do the stadium thing like he does it, it's not in my nature. 'I've got to say, I kind of look at him and go: "Good for you, mate". He's been amazing." Having played Dublin's Croke Park last week, Oasis will take their monumental gigs to North America before returning to the UK for dates at Wembley. They will then continue the tour with gigs in South East Asia, Australia and South America. And during the interview, Noel told how he's most looking forward to playing at Argentina's River Plate stadium as the venue is a 'special, special place' for the band. He explained: 'The River Plate stadium in Buenos Aires in November. It's the second last show and we've played there a couple of times. 'The Argentinians are without doubt in the top five places for us to play in the world and it's the furthest away from Ireland and Manchester. 'Everybody is looking forward to River Plate because it's a special, special, special place for us.' Noel's words comes amid reports he has been inspired during the Oasis tour and has written a number of new songs for a potential Oasis album. The singer is currently on tour with brother Liam and hasn't decided yet if they will perform the new music together. Noel, who also fronts High Flying Birds, is reportedly debating whether to keep the tracks for a solo album or join forces with Liam again to released a new Oasis album. An insider has told The Mirror: 'Noel has been inspired by playing to adoring crowds, who have supercharged his creativity. But he is undecided whether his work will become a new album for Oasis with Liam on vocals.' Noel is said to be 'waiting to see how things play out' on tour but so far is said to be in a 'fine mood'. But the source revealed: 'Noel has been in an absolutely fine mood. He's also been strumming some new tunes in his dressing room. But, from what he has said, these tracks are not yet aligned for any project. 'There is no Oasis studio return as yet agreed by the band, and they still have a long way to go. Things are great now, but who knows what will happen given the brothers' past troubles on the road.'

The 'real reason' Alex Reid shared video of ex Katie Price brazenly counting cash is 'revealed' - and the unlikely 'final straw' that made him speak out
Alex Reid shared the video of his ex Katie Price brazenly counting cash after being left furious by an unlikely comment in her recent statement, it's been claimed. The former cage fighter, 50, shared a clip on Instagram on Monday that showed the star, who at the time had been declared bankrupt, counting a wad of notes. And a friend of Alex has now told The Sun that he decided to post the video online after repeatedly seeing four seemingly innocent words in a string of statements shared by Katie's team last week. They went onto claim that Alex's work opportunities dried up in the wake of his split from Katie, and he's grown tired of seeing her flaunt a luxurious lifestyle while he lives 'month to month'. Last week, Katie hit back at her ex Peter Andre after he shared a statement accusing her of 'baseless lies' over the past 16 years. The statement in question said: 'Kate is in a much better and clear headspace and is at peace with the situation. 'This was in the past, and she doesn't feel the need to bring up tit for tat comments, but more importantly she's dealing with this the right way and it's now in her lawyers hands. Kate will no longer be gaslighted and bullied as she once was.' Alex's friend said he was 'crushed' when he read the repeated phrase that is ex 'Katie was at peace.' They added: 'It was those words that touched such a nerve for him, out of everything Katie has said, because the trauma of everything he has been through since the end of his marriage to her is still very raw. 'He feels like Katie just washes her hands of stuff and takes no accountability - saying she is at peace feels so dismissive, hypocritical and absolutely ridiculous.' They went onto claim Alex has 'game-changing evidence' that will 'change the way people view this sorry saga.' The source went onto claim that Alex has grown increasingly frustrated with Katie since their 2011 split, after she took a string of public swipes at him, and particularly his cross-dressing alter-ego Roxanne. Alex also reportedly grew irate at seeing Katie show off a £1700 YSL handbag after jetting back from Turkey following yet another facelift, as well as a Van Cleef and Arpels necklace, which retails for £14,000. It's also alleged that Katie has not paid a penny of £175,000 in damages and legal costs Alex was awarded after he sued her for showing a sex tape of him on Big Brother spin-off show Bit On The Side without his consent. Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Alex Reid and Katie Price for comment. The video Alex shared, which is believed to have been filmed in 2020, shows Katie saying she is 'enjoying counting' the wads of money in front of her during a conversation with her daughter Princess Andre. There is no suggestion that Katie didn't declare the cash. In the video she brags: 'There's loads here… I'm just sorting it out.' A representative for Katie Price told Daily Mail: 'This is a video that was shared with Katie's Trustee in Bankruptcy several months ago and Katie has fully complied with the Trustee's investigations into the same. 'The cash featured did not belong to Katie and the property referred to was dealt with in the financial settlement proceedings arising out of Katie's divorce from Peter Andre. 'Katie's Trustee in Bankruptcy is aware of the property and has undoubtedly investigated whether the same ought to be comprised in the bankruptcy estate.' A source close to Peter also said: 'Peter has seen the video and is totally disgusted, even more so because his young daughter has been involved in it.' His representatives added: 'Peter will be dealing with this with his lawyers.' Alongside the video, Alex said: 'For years, I've watched as stories — many false, exaggerated, or deliberately twisted — have been pushed out into the public. Fake news isn't just a headline, it destroys lives, reputations, and families. 'This has been years in the making. Countless hours of collaboration, gathering evidence, and finding the strength to finally stand up and say: enough is enough. 'I have stayed quiet long enough. Now is the time to speak. This isn't about gossip, this isn't about drama - this is about the truth. 'The announcement I'm about to make will challenge the false narratives and shine a light where it has been needed for far too long. 'The time for speculation is over. The truth is about to come out.' As Alex shared the video on social media, Princess Andre took to Instagram to share a post telling her followers that she's 'got her sparkle back.' After receiving praise from viewers for her ITV2 documentary series, the influencer shared a video of herself gracing a catwalk in a blue bikini, a moment which in the show she admitted made her feel 'exposed.' The post featured the text: 'To the girls who are getting their sparkle back.' She captioned the post: 'Being so honest on the show wasn't easy, but your love and support has meant the world to me. 'Thank you for watching and for all the kind messages.' Katie later responded to Peter's bombshell statement with a bizarre Instagram post about 'fake Sinners who play the victim' on Friday It comes after it was reported that Alex and Katie's third husband Kieran Hayler are teaming up and have consulted lawyers in a bid to block Katie from including them in a tell-all Sky documentary. The three-part show, likely to release next year, is set to delve into the details of her fleeting flings, serious relationships and time in the spotlight. A source told The Mirror: 'They feel like they have been backed into a corner and have no choice. 'They just want her to stop trashing them, and can't believe she is being given a platform.' Elsewhere, Katie and ex-husband Peter are currently locked in a bitter feud after he hit out at her 'baseless lies over the last 16 years' in a blistering statement on Thursday. Katie responded to Peter 's bombshell statement with a bizarre Instagram post about 'fake Sinners who play the victim' on Friday. Rumours of a 'rift' between Katie and their daughter Princess have been growing in recent weeks after Katie didn't attend Princess's 18th birthday party, or appear on the nepo baby 's fly-on-the-wall ITV television series. Katie later claimed that it was her daughter's management who had told her not to appear on the show. In a lengthy Instagram statement, Katie pleaded 'I'm trying to be the best I can' while noting she hasn't 'always been the best mother'. She wrote: 'Saints and sinners. As we know, in this life we are thought of as Saints and Sinners. I know I will always be a Sinner. That's fair, I allowed myself to fail into reliance on drugs and alcohol. 'At times I was not the mother I should have been while I struggled with mental illness. I have been at times a poor friend, an awful sibling, an an untrustworthy partner. I've self medicated, been unfaithful, damaged myself and those that I love. 'I've had many reasons - I was sexually abused when younger; I've had relationships that have been coercive; and my mental health issues - but I don't want to make excuses.' Katie continued: 'I've recognised my issues and worked to put them behind me. Sometimes I tried and failed, sometimes I succeeded. 'I've pulled myself out of suicidal spiral because I love my children and want to be there for them. 'I don't pretend to be perfect by any means - but I'm trying to be the best I can. Then there are the "Saints". Some are genuine and some have helped me. 'But some Saints are not who they would have you believe they are. They have a carefully managed image which must be exhausting to maintain. 'Some Saints are fake. They play the victim and to succeed in life they need a villain... or at least a Sinner. Without the Sinner they don't get to be the Saint... 'As a Sinner - I sometimes get bored of these Saints. But maybe I should feel sorry for them, It must be such hard work having to pretend all the time. 'Anyway, all you Sinners keep your heads up and keep trying to be better. All you Saints, it's ok not to be perfect xxx' Peter shared his side of the story on Thursday, explaining: 'For sixteen years, I have stayed silent in the face of repeated lies from my ex-wife and her family, out of respect for my children and loved ones, but staying silent has been incredibly frustrating. That ends today. 'The latest comments about my children's welfare and living arrangements compel me to set the record straight. For well-documented reasons, and for their safety, Junior and Princess came into my care in 2018 and remained with me until they reached adulthood. 'In 2019, the family courts issued a legally binding order to enforce this arrangement. I have never made this public before, out of respect for my children.' 'In 2011 and 2015, publicly documented court cases found my ex-wife had made false claims. She was ordered to pay substantial damages and legal costs, and to apologise to me and my management. The same falsehoods are being repeated today. 'Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations I have yet to address. Those will now be dealt with in the coming months.'

Robbie Williams, 51, reprises iconic dungarees from his Take That heyday at new album Q&A as he admits he's battling with his hair which is 'thinning everyday'
Robbie Williams gave fans a cheeky throwback to his Take That days as he attended a Q&A for his new album Britpop on Tuesday. The hitmaker, 51, arrived a pair of denim dungarees akin to the ones he wore while performing in the beloved boyband back in the 1990s. Robbie, who is set to release his new album on October 10th, also reflected on how his appearance has changed over the years, during an interview with Joe Lycett at London's Groucho Club. The Angels legend confessed his hair is now 'thinning everyday' and he's struggling to keep his locks looking full for his fans. Asked how he's maintained his ageless appearance, Robbie said: 'Because I've got like ADHD and I don't look, and my self care is appalling and then I have to remember to apply moisturiser, which I do have. 'Then it's just a fools error because then I don't do it again for another two months. Robbie Williams gave fans a cheeky throwback to his Take That days as he attended a Q&A for his new album Britpop on Tuesday The hitmaker arrived a pair of denim dungarees (left) akin to the ones he wore while performing in the beloved boyband back in the 1990s (pictured right in 1992) 'The hair is powder and scaffolding because it's thinning and it's going and I think about it everyday. 'The skin at the moment is due to my makeup artist, who I think has done a really good job.' Robbie famously wore his denim overalls, and little else, while taking to the stage with Take That to perform at the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party back in 1992. Reflecting on the look in an interview with British Vogue, he previously said: 'Dungarees were part of my look back in the day, cost effective, slightly unusual because not many people were wearing them. 'I'd be naked underneath with my top, but it could cover up my belly, so it gave the illusion that I was a buff ting!' Robbie's new album also sees him reunite with his Take That bandmate Gary Barlow, with the pair working on a song together for the first time since he briefly reunited with the band for an album and tour in 2010 and 2011. He said: 'I've collaborated with Gary on a lot of tracks actually. It's great because that particular track is a song made by Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow about Morrisey. Describing the song as 'considerate', he added: 'The reason I'm considerate about it is because I'm writing it from the point of view of a stalker, so it's somebody who's stalking, and is completely obsessed and in love with him.' Robbie, who is set to release his new album on October 10th, also reflected on how his appearance has changed over the years, during an interview with Joe Lycett The Angels legend confessed his hair is now 'thinning everyday' and he's struggling to keep his locks looking full for his fans Robbie and his wife Ayda, 46, share four children, Teddy, 11, son Charlie, nine, daughter Coco, five and three-year-old son Beau. Robbie previously said that his kids are a massive factor in deciding where to live because they need to be placed in suitable schools. It was reported earlier this month that he and his wife Ayda have splashed out £30 million on a lavish new waterfront mansion in Miami. He explained: 'The four kids are constantly a Rubix Cube puzzle that we're trying to sort out because if they are schooled then they don't see me because I'm all over the place and if they are home-schooled then they have another set of things that are a problem.' Speaking in 2014, Robbie - then a father of two - admitted he was keen to make the United Kingdom his permanent base after spending an extended period of time in the United States. He told The Sun: 'I love LA. The people and the weather are great but it's not England. It can't offer the same. Things change when you're a dad - there are people to look after who are more important than yourself. 'I want [daughter] Teddy and the new baby, whatever it may be, to be educated in England. Teddy is already surrounded by English people so she's bound to have an accent anyway. 'But that's not the point - we want to educate her in London. We've just bought a ruddy big house so we had better be coming back!'
