‘Terrified' mama dog came to shelter with 8 pups. Now, she gets second chance

Miami Herald17-06-2025
A mama dog with eight puppies was 'terrified' — and now, she gets a second chance.
After all of Polly's pups were adopted from a Florida shelter, she finally has a home of her own.
'We continue to get amazing updates from her family on her progress,' Peyton Davis, marketing manager for the Humane Society of Pinellas, told McClatchy News in a June 16 email. 'Her progress was slow in the beginning, but her family had been determined to never give up on her.'
The heartwarming adoption came after Polly landed at the shelter in March. At the time, she was 'underweight, recovering from heartworms, and terrified,' the humane society wrote in its email and in a Facebook post.
'Polly was extremely timid and shy,' Davis wrote. 'She took a while to warm up to new people. She was quite fearful of the world around her.'
Polly had arrived at the shelter with her eight puppies, who all bear names of toys: Barbie, Beyblade, Bratz, Furby, Game Boy, Hot Wheels, Lego and Tamagotchi. The babies were weaned, so they got ready to go to new homes.
'While her puppies were quickly adopted, Polly needed something more — time, patience, and a whole lot of love,' the animal organization wrote. 'Our team never rushed her. We celebrated the tiniest milestones — like taking a few steps outside or sniffing a new friend.'
Then one day, a couple saw Polly on the shelter's website and 'felt a spark.' At the shelter, they were warned that Polly might be hesitant to come close, but the pair still wanted to meet her.
'Every step of the way, they let Polly take the lead,' Davis wrote. 'They brought blankets and toys that smelled like them and their home to get her comfortable with their presence, even when they weren't here. They brought her favorite treats, too!'
For weeks, the couple kept visiting the shelter to bond with Polly. Eventually the pair adopted her, kicking off their next chapter together on May 23.
'When Polly finally went home, our work didn't end,' the shelter wrote. 'We checked in regularly, helped troubleshoot routines, and celebrated alongside her new family as Polly bloomed. Because of this partnership, Polly nearly became a new dog — from frozen in fear to zoomies around the yard and snuggles at bedtime.'
The humane society is in Clearwater, west of Tampa.

Cruiserweight Jake Paul and lightweight Gervonta Davis announce they will fight on Nov. 14

ATLANTA (AP) — YouTuber-turned-cruiserweight boxer Jake Paul and undefeated WBA lightweight champion Gervonta 'Tank' Davis have agreed to fight on Nov. 14 at Atlanta's State Farm Arena. Paul's promotional company, Most Valuable Promotions, and Netflix announced the highly unusual matchup Wednesday. Netflix will stream the fight worldwide to its more than 300 million subscribers. The 30-year-old Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs), a three-division world champion, would be the first star near his ostensible prime to face Paul (12-1, 7 KOs), the online celebrity who has become one of the world's highest-paid combat sports athletes despite never fighting an elite boxer. Netflix and Nakisa Bidarian, Paul's business partner, did not refer to the fight as an exhibition, but it's unclear how Georgia officials would allow the matchup to be held as a competitive bout, given the fighters' dramatic difference in size and experience. Paul typically weighs more than 200 pounds in the ring, while Davis is a 135-pound champion who has never fought above 140 pounds. The fighters did not announce a contracted weight or the number of rounds in their planned bout. The fight would mark a return to Netflix for the 28-year-old Paul, whose victory last November over the then-58-year-old Mike Tyson drew an estimated 108 million viewers globally. After Paul beat a tepid Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. by decision earlier this summer, he entered the World Boxing Association's cruiserweight rankings at No. 14, making him eligible to fight for world titles. Instead of pursuing a cruiserweight belt, Paul recently discussed a fight with two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua — a more logical opponent in terms of size and strength — but shifted his focus to the popular Davis. who has jousted with Paul on social media for years. Perhaps Paul can look inside his own family for a plan: His older brother, Logan, weighed 189 pounds before fighting Floyd Mayweather at 155 pounds in an eight-round exhibition bout in 2021. Promoters said the spectacle sold more than 1 million pay-per-view buys and made more than $80 million. Davis has been billed by his promoters as 'the modern day Mike Tyson" because of the frequency with which he has won by knockout, but his career and life have been rocky in 2025. He struggled to a shocking draw against Lamont Roach Jr. in his most recent ring outing in March, and he was arrested on a domestic violence charge in Florida last month before the misdemeanor battery case was dropped last week. Bidarian said Paul and Davis are 'favorites of the Gen Z and Gen Alpha audiences,' and that their bout will 'determine the true face of boxing's next generation.'

Watch Oklahoma QB John Mateer give Sooners teammates Beats By Dre

When the Oklahoma Sooners added quarterback John Mateer via the transfer portal, the hope was that he'd help resurrect an offense that was one of the worst in the nation in 2025. Not only has he done that, but he's also been a big part of building team 131 from a leadership standpoint. Players and coaches have spoken of Mateer's leadership and how he's not only built relationships with everyone on the offensive side of the ball, but he's also built a strong rapport with the guys on defense as well. He's sat in on meetings with each position group and has gone above and beyond to build confidence and camaraderie. Mateer recently entered into a name, image, and likeness agreement with the worldwide brand Beats by Dre. Oklahoma football released a video of Mateer walking into Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium sporting the Oklahoma Sooners-themed Beats. But that wasn't all. Mateer also gifted his teammates with a pair of Beats. The reaction will leave you smiling, as teammates could be heard in the video shouting, "We love you, John!!!" The gesture had the players smiling and cheering after practice let out. Watch the video of Mateer giving his teammates the Beats headphones below as released by Oklahoma Football's social media team. Jake Paul to face lightweight boxing champion Gervonta Davis on Nov. 14

Jake Paul will face Gervonta "Tank" Davis in a boxing match on Nov. 14 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Netflix announced Wednesday. The bout is expected to be the biggest test to date for Paul, a social media star with 28 million followers on Instagram and 21 million followers on YouTube. Paul (12-1) became a professional boxer in January 2020 and has impressed despite limited experience in the ring. He has faced criticism for his competition, however. Most of his opponents have been nonboxers — a former NBA Slam Dunk champion in Nate Robinson, and MMA fighters like Anderson Silva, Tyron Woodley, Ben Askren and Mike Perry. He beat a 59-year-old Mike Tyson, and his lone loss came to boxer Tommy Fury, the half-brother of former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. Paul, 28, is coming off a unanimous decision against former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in June. Davis is without question Paul's most heralded opponent. The 30-year-old WBA lightweight champion is one of the sport's top talents, amassing a 30-0-1 record. Though he stands just 5-foot-5, Davis is known for his vicious punching power and has 28 knockouts in his career. He most recently retained his belt with a majority decision draw against Lamond Roach Jr. in March. Davis' boxing career was in jeopardy after he was arrested on July 11 in an alleged domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend. According to the Miami-Dade County Clerk's Office, a misdemeanor battery charge against Davis was dropped. Paul vs. Davis is the latest boxing match promoted by Netflix as it gets more involved in live sports. Paul's bout with Tyson last November, for example, peaked at 65 million streams, according to the streaming service. Netflix is also promoting Terence Crawford vs. Canelo Alvarez on Sept. 13, and has WWE Raw and multiple NFL games on Christmas Day. Not everyone in the boxing world is happy Paul vs. Davis is happening. Ryan Garcia, a former WBC interim lightweight champion who lost to Davis in 2023, wrote on social media that "boxing is officially the WWE … integrity of the sport is getting ruined every day."
