Ukraine-Russia war latest: Trump says Putin call ended in ‘no progress at all' and defends weapon supply halt
"I didn't make any progress with him at all," Mr Trump told reporters in brief comments at an air base outside Washington yesterday.
The US president also issued his first comments on the US decision to halt some weapon shipments for Ukraine. He defended the move, blaming his predecessor Joe Biden for sending too many weapons.
"We're giving weapons, but we've given so many weapons. But we are giving weapons. And we're working with them and trying to help them, but we haven't... You know, Biden emptied out our whole country giving them weapons, and we have to make sure that we have enough for ourselves," Mr Trump said.
The US has blocked a number of planned shipments to Ukraine that included Patriot air defence missiles and precision-guided artillery, warning that its own domestic stockpiles were running low, but said that 'robust' options for Kyiv were still available.

President Vladimir Putin updated North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on his upcoming talks with US president Donald Trump in Alaska this week, the Kremlin said on Tuesday. North Korea's state news agency KCNA later reported the two leaders' call without mentioning the meeting scheduled on Friday between Putin and Trump. Putin expressed appreciation for North Korea's help in 'liberating' the Kursk region in western Russia in the war against Ukraine and 'the bravery, heroism and self-sacrificing spirit displayed by service personnel of the Korean People's Army,' KCNA said, and the two leaders pledged to strengthen cooperation. North Korea has dispatched more than 10,000 troops to support Russia's campaign in western Russia in the Ukraine conflict and is believed to be planning another deployment, according to a South Korean intelligence assessment. Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Ukraine could not agree to a Russian proposal to give up more of his country's territory in exchange for a ceasefire because Moscow would use what it gained as a springboard to start a future war. Speaking to journalists in the run-up to the Trump-Putin summit, and a day before a virtual meeting with US and European leaders, Zelenskyy said he believed Putin wanted to dominate his country because he 'does not want a sovereign Ukraine'. Ukraine's leader, who confirmed he would not be at the summit, said he wanted Putin to agree to a ceasefire on the current frontlines and for both sides to return all prisoners of war and missing children, before any discussion about territory and the future security of the country. 'Any question of territory cannot be separated from security guarantees,' he said. Zelenskyy also said Friday's summit would effectively postpone new US sanctions on Russia, which Trump had promised to impose if Putin refused to halt his war, and called the talks a 'personal victory' for Putin. 'First, he will meet on US territory, which I consider his personal victory. Second, he is coming out of isolation because he is meeting on US territory. Third, with this meeting, he has somehow postponed sanctions,' Zelenskyy said. Zelenskyy also said he had received a 'signal' from US envoy Steve Witkoff that Russia might agree to a ceasefire, without elaborating. 'This was the first signal from them,' Zelenskyy said. Zelenskyy is to hold virtual talks with European leaders and Trump on Wednesday ahead of the Alaska summit, in which they will discuss ways of putting pressure on Russia and preparing for potential peace negotiations, according to Germany. On Tuesday all EU leaders apart from Hungary signed a statement appealing to Trump, saying that any 'solution' must protect Ukrainian and European security interests. The White House said the Alaska summit would be a 'a listening exercise for the president'. 'Only one party that's involved in this war is going to be present, and so this is for the president to go and to get, again, a more firm and better understanding of how we can hopefully bring this war to an end,' White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said. 'This is a listening exercise for the president.' In his briefing with journalists, Zelenskyy said Russia was taking heavy casualties of about 1,000 a day, with 500 killed and 500 wounded on Monday, because it relies heavily on infantry assaults to break Kyiv's defensive lines. Zelenskyy said Ukraine's casualties on the same day were much smaller – a total of 340 – '18 killed and 243 wounded, with 79 missing in action'. Russian forces have made a sudden thrust into eastern Ukraine near the coal mining town of Dobropillia, a move that may be an attempt to increase the pressure on Kyiv to give up land ahead of the summit with Trump. Ukraine's authoritative DeepState war map showed on Tuesday that Russian forces had advanced by at least 10 km (six miles) north in two prongs in recent days, part of their drive to take full control of Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region. Zelenskyy warned Russia was planning new ground assaults on at least three different areas of the front line. Ukraine's SBU intelligence agency said on Tuesday its drones hit a building containing long-range Shahed attack drones in Russia's Tatarstan region, 1,300 km (800 miles) from Ukraine. The SBU said this was the second such strike in four days, and that videos filmed by local residents there confirmed the facility had been hit. It was not possible to independently confirm the report. UN secretary-general António Guterres warned Russia on Tuesday that he has significant concerns about patterns of certain forms of sexual violence by their armed and security forces, according to a report seen by Reuters. Guterres wrote that he was 'gravely concerned about credible information of violations by Russian armed and security forces and affiliated armed groups' primarily against Ukrainian prisoners of war, in 50 official and 22 unofficial detention facilities in Ukraine and Russia.

National Guard descends on streets of Washington DC after Trump vows to 'rescue capital from bloodshed'
The National Guard started patrolling the streets of Washington DC on Tuesday night after President Trump announced the government would takeover policing in the city. Troops with the National Guard arrived into the capital late on Tuesday night in a bid by the White House to curb violent crime. Images of the troops started to pour in shortly after 8pm EST, showing camo clad officers being dispersed throughout the city. Military Humvees also parked on the National Mall on Tuesday evening with officers standing closeby. FBI Director Kash Patel said that so far arrested 23 people were arrested in the city with help from partners in a post to his X. According to Patel one person was arrested on a search warrant for a previous murder charge while others were nabbed for unlawful possession of firearms. Patel added that multiple people were also arrested for having outstanding warrants for DUI, while one was taken in for violating a restraining order. 'These are just a few examples we are just getting started. When you let good cops be cops they can clean up our streets and do it fast', he added. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that around 850 officers and agents had fanned out across the city on Monday and made the arrests. The move by Trump was announced on Monday, the president said the move was to 'rescue our nation's capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor'. Flanked by cabinet members Attorney General Pam Bondi, US Attorney for DC Jeanine Pirro, FBI Director Kash Patel, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Interior Director Doug Burgum, Trump said he would instruct federal law enforcement officials to deploy aggressive tactics against the city's worst offenders. 'You spit and we hit and we can hit real hard,' he said. The president also vowed to clear out camps of homeless people from Washington, DC parks and public lands. Federal law officials began their citywide deployment over the weekend, ramping up a public display of force that was seen immediately by residents. 'Our Capital City has been overtaken by violent gangs, bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged out maniacs and homeless people, and we're not going to let it happen anymore,' he said. 'We're not going to take it.' Trump also highlighted recent horrific crimes in the city including a 21-year-old congressional intern who was hit by a stray bullet in a drive-by shooting and killed. As well as a former Trump administration official murdered in a carjacking, and a Democratic congressman who was carjacked at gunpoint. Trump also recalled a 'demented lunatic' that stabbed an aide to Sen. Rand Paul in 2023 and a 3-year-old girl who was shot and killed near the Capitol. The president's claim that crime has spike has been contested by the D.C.'s Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser, who has pointed to stats that show violent crime has decreased in the District since 2023. Violent crime in DC is down 26 percent this year and in 2024 reached a 30-year low, with 190 homicides in 2024 compared to 274 in 2023, according to metro police department statistics. 'The Mayor of D.C., Muriel Bowser, is a good person who has tried, but she has been given many chances, and the Crime Numbers get worse, and the City only gets dirtier and less attractive,' Trump said in a Sunday night Truth Social post. In April, Bowser announced the creation of a special police force specifically to tackle underage crime. In an interview on MSNBC Sunday, she pushed back on White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller saying that D.C. was 'more violent than Baghdad.'
