The pro golf world may still be basking in the afterglow of Scottie Scheffler's bravura fourth major victory, but while fans pause to reflect on whether the current world No. 1 may be echoing Tiger in his prime, the tour has pressed onto Minnesota for the 3M Open.
With only two events to go in the regular season, the stakes are elevated at TPC Twin Cities as players battle to improve their position in the FedExCup standings. For those hovering around the bubble, the margins are as thin as Scotch Tape and there's way more on the line than simply a share of the 3M Open's $8.4 million purse.
The top 70 after next week's Wyndham Championship advance to the FedExCup Playoffs. Golfers who finish in the top 50 in the standings after the FedEx St. Jude move on to the BMW Championship and from there only the top 30 will be left standing and go on to East Lake in Atlanta for the Tour Championship.
Beyond the immediate postseason horizon, to secure spots in next year's lucrative signature events, players must stick inside the top 50 when the season is in the bag. Otherwise, they'll need to punch their ticket via the Aon Next 10, Aon Swing 5, or else hold onto the hope of a sponsor's exemption.

Tony Finau is tied with Xander Schauffele for the longest active streak of Tour Championship appearances with eight straight East Lake appearances. But the Utah native isn't quite on solid footing to extend his run to nine. The six-time PGA winner, who topped the leaderboard here in 2022, finds himself perched at 59th in the standings, inside the top 70 but still shy of that all-important top 50 cutoff, so he's got work to do.
'It's definitely in the back of my mind because I know how important that top-50 number has become on the PGA Tour,' Finau said in his pre-tournament press conference.
'I'm trying to put myself in a situation to have a chance to win on Sunday this week and if I'm able to do that, then I know the points and everything will take care of themselves,' he added.
Gotterup Rising
You don't have to scroll too far back on the calendar to the days when Chris Gotterup wasn't on most golf fans' radar. Sure, he'd won the inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic last year—an opposite-field event—but his sophomore season on the PGA Tour had been more steady than spectacular. He notched nine top-25 finishes, offset by just as many missed cuts.
But then cue up Born To Run. Gotterup vaulted 55 spots in the FedExCup standings in the space of a fortnight, outdueling Rory McIlroy to win the Scottish Open and showing he had staying power by coming in third in the Open Championship.
No one would begrudge the New Jerseyan if he took a week off after his cross-the-pond breakout, but Gotterup wants to keep the pedal to the metal.
'I'm trying to ride the hot hand obviously right now, so that's goal No. 1.,' Gotterup said. '3M gave me a spot a couple years ago when I came out of school and I felt like I kind of owe a little something back to them. I was planning on playing but that definitely helped,' he added.
Now firmly inside the top 30 in the FedExCup standings, Gotterup is navigating uncharted territory—and embracing the moment.
'I feel like I'm playing with house money at the moment, especially with what's happened. I'm excited for the rest of the season.'

Pivetta's dominant outing and Merrill's clutch hit propel Padres to sixth straight win

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Nick Pivetta gave up one hit and one run in seven innings, Jackson Merrill drove in two runs, and the San Diego Padres won their sixth game in a row, 4-1 over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night. Pivetta (11-3) struck out five and did not give up a walk. His only blemish was a solo homer by Willson Contreras in the fifth that gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. San Diego answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth in large part to two errors that led to three unearned runs. With Jake Cronenworth at first and one out, Jose Iglesias hit a slow grounder to third baseman Nolan Gorman, whose wide throw hit first baseman Contreras' glove and rolled away. Cronenworth went to third and scored when Contreras' throw to Gorman skipped away. Elias Díaz singled in Iglesias and four batters later, Merrill hit a two-out single up the middle against Matt Svanson. Robert Suarez notched his major league-best 31st save with a scoreless ninth. Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore (6-9) pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up four hits and four runs (one earned). Key moment Padres reliever Mason Miller, acquired at the trade deadline on Thursday from the Athletics, trotted in from the bullpen in the eighth inning to roaring applause from the soldout Petco Park crowd for his first appearance with San Diego. Miller got Yohel Pozo to ground into a double play with one out and runners at the corners to get out of the inning unscathed. Key stat The Cardinals have lost five of their last six games. In those five loses, St. Louis has scored a combined four runs. Up next The Cardinals' RHP Michael McGreevy (2-2, 4.91 ERA) takes the hill in game two of the series Saturday night versus Padres' RHP Randy Vásquez (3-4, 3.65). ___ AP MLB:

Lakers have revealed their 2025-26 City Edition jerseys

The Los Angeles Lakers have one of the most iconic uniform designs in all of sports. The design has seen some tweaks over the years, but it has largely remained the same, generally speaking, for over 50 years. Every team has four uniforms it can wear, which include the City Edition uniforms. The Lakers' City Edition uniforms for the 2024-25 season weren't well regarded, and they played so poorly in them that they stopped wearing them around midseason. This coming season, the Lakers will be recycling their City Edition uniforms from the 2023-24 campaign, per the team's official X (formerly Twitter) account. When this design was first unveiled two years ago, plenty thought it was at least somewhat uninspired and even boring. The fact that the team is simply using it again instead of coming up with a new one has led to fans expressing their disappointment. On a brighter note, the Lakers' Statement Edition uniforms have been improved. The black stripe down the sides that they had has been removed, and the team's wordmark and the player numbers are now in white with gold trim. Now, if only L.A.'s Icon Edition uniforms would go with gold instead of yellow as their primary color, the team's fans would likely be happy enough with its on-court threads. Pittsburgh Steelers fans soak in the excitement at annual Friday Night Lights practice

The energy was electric when the Steelers showed up to Latrobe Memorial Stadium for their annual Friday Night practice under the lights. 'Just the atmosphere,' said Jason Stone of Uniontown, attending his third Friday Night Lights. 'The people the crowd, the noise, you can't get anything better than being here! Friday Night Lights!' Fans told Channel 11's Andrew Havranek they look forward to this practice all summer. They said there's just something special about seeing the pros up close, and getting their autographs. This year, a highly coveted autograph was that of the four-time NFL MVP Quarterback Aaron Rodgers. 'I've gotten Aaron Rodgers, [Spencer] Anderson, Pat Friermuth, that was awesome!' said Lexi Thurston of Chesterfield, Virginia. '[Rodgers is] an absolute legend like you can't get any better than that. It's like crazy it made me freak out, I didn't know what to do.' 'I'm hoping he leads us to the Super Bowl, obviously getting him that last one before he retires,' said Landon Thomas of Lancaster, Ohio. Before practice started Channel 11's Andrew Havranek caught up with fan who shares the Aaron Rodgers name. Of course, her first name is spelled a bit differently, but it's still caused her some hardships, especially after Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers beat the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV. 'Growing up I always got name like, all kinds of jokes about me, when I go into restaurants, everyone thinks I'm joking most of the time, they're like 'you're Erin Rodgers?'' she said. Now, she's just hoping that since Aaron Rodgers is in the black and gold, she won't be booed anymore. 'It makes it a lot better instead of it being kind of an exciting but also booing me it will be more an all around 100% good because now I can outwardly support him and not be shunned,' Rodgers said. And as for that Rodgers Packers jersey she owns? 'Are you going to be replacing that with a Steelers' Rodgers jersey?' Havranek asked. 'I am considering it,' Rodgers said.
