Manhunt for ex-soldier after his three young daughters found dead at campsite
Authorities asked the public on Tuesday for help finding Travis Decker, 32, who is wanted for three counts of murder and kidnapping, according to police in Wenatchee, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of Seattle.
Police said it was unknown whether Mr Decker, a former army soldier with 'extensive training', was armed.
On Friday, the mother of Paityn, nine, Evelyn, eight, and Olivia Decker, five, reported that their father did not return them after a planned visit, police said.
Over the weekend, authorities looked for the children and for Mr Decker, who was believed to be living out of a white 2017 GMC Sierra pick-up truck with Washington plates.
Mr Decker's unoccupied truck was found on Monday near a campground west of the city of Leavenworth, which is about 20 miles (30 kilometres) north west of Wenatchee.
According to an affidavit, Chelan County Sheriff's Office deputies found the girls' bodies about 68 to 91 metres away from the truck, The Seattle Times reported. Police believe the girls died from asphyxiation and reported that their wrists were zip-tied, court documents said.
'Due to safety concerns do not attempt to contact or approach Decker,' police said.
The Wenatchee School District said the girls were students of Lincoln Elementary and that counselling services were available.
The mother told police that Decker picked the children up at around 5pm and had not returned them by 8pm.
When she tried to reach him, his phone went straight to voicemail, court documents said.
The detective said she 'expressed concern because Decker reportedly has never done this before and is currently experiencing some mental health issues'.
'What prompted her to call us was that ... he was late returning the girls and had not communicated to her that he was going to be late, which was his typical fashion and so this was out of the ordinary,' Capt Brian Chance said.
Washington State Patrol was contacted on Friday night to request an Amber Alert, but it did not meet the required criteria, Wenatchee police said. The following day Wenatchee detectives contacted the patrol with additional information that led to the issuance of an endangered missing person alert.
The lacking criteria was suspected abduction and imminent peril of death or serious injury, said Chris Loftis, the director of public affairs for the state patrol.
'In this case, it was a parent with custodial privileges, and the children had not been returned home on time. But that's a rather common occurrence and not something where you just automatically assume abduction,' he said, adding that there was no indication Decker, a custodial parent who had the children for a visit, would harm them.
'We're people too, you know, so the loss of a child, the loss of two children, the loss of three children is devastating,' Mr Loftis said. 'Everybody always looks to how we can improve.'
The alert systems are constantly evolving and this could prompt further change, Mr Loftis said: 'Obviously it didn't work this time. Obviously we have three children that are dead.'
'Absolute tragedy'
Mr Decker joined the army in 2013 and transferred to the Washington National Guard in 2021, Karina Shagren, the Washington military department spokeswoman, told The Associated Press. He was a full-time member of the Guard until 2023 or 2024, when he switched to part-time.
Mr Decker stopped attending mandatory monthly drills a little over a year ago, and the Guard was in the process of a disciplinary discharge for him, Shagren said.
'This is an absolute tragedy,' Ms Shagren said. 'We are mourning along with the community.'
The Chelan County Sheriff's Office, which found the truck, was leading the search in the Okanogan Wenatchee National Forest area while other teams followed up on 'potential credible information and tips' regarding Decker's location, the agency said in a statement.
The agency was working with US Marshals to locate and apprehend Decker and the search continued on Tuesday evening. A reward of up to $20,000 was available for information leading directly to his arrest.

Illegal Salvadorian fugitive jailed for murdering Maryland mother
An illegal migrant from El Salvador has been sentenced to life in jail for raping and murdering a Maryland mother on a popular hiking trail. Victor Martinez-Hernandez, 24, was found guilty of first-degree murder, first-degree rape and kidnapping following a jury trial in April this year for his attack on the 37-year-old Rachel Morin. Prosecutors alleged he carried out a planned attack when in August 2023, he grabbed the mother of five off a popular Maryland hiking trail, bashed her head against nearby rocks and concealed her body in a gutter. During a hearing on Monday, a judge handed down the maximum sentence, condemning Martinez-Hernandez to serve life without the possibility of parole, another life sentence, and an additional 40 years in prison. Alison Healey, Harford County State Attorney described Martinez-Hernandez as 'completely and entirely unamenable to treatment or rehabilitation' as she called for the toughest possible sentence. 'If he is released our community is in grave danger ... It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when,' she told the court. The judge concurred, telling the killer: 'You are not a candidate for rehabilitation. There is simply no hope to rehabilitate you. 'You took a life that was not yours to take. Your acts not only brutalised a young woman but also terrorised a community. The Ma & Pa Trail is a place of beauty ... your acts turned that into a place of terror.' Morin's brutal killing – in which she was raped and strangled to death – sent shocked the suburban community of Bel Air, northeast of Baltimore. It became a flashpoint during the 2024 presidential election as Donald Trump called for mass deportations of immigrants living in the US illegally. In April, Mr Trump embraced Moran's mother, Patty Moran, in the Oval office, telling reporters: 'She's been through hell.' Ms Moran also spoke at a press briefing alongside Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, in which she said: 'This person took my daughter so violently and so gruesomely and so graphically that they sealed the pictures because I don't want my granddaughters to see these pictures.' The court previously heard that Moran was running along the Ma and Pa Trail in Bel Air when she was dragged into the woods and killed. A post-mortem found she died from a combination of blunt-force trauma and strangulation. Martinez-Hernandez was arrested last summer in Oklahoma after DNA from Morin's body linked him to the scene. Police said he had been living in the US illegally since February 2023. They also linked him to a 2023 home invasion in Los Angeles. In the months after Morin's death, her killer had searched online for information about the case and taken a screenshot of a media report, prosecutors said. Martinez-Hernandez will not be deported to El Salvador, which has been used by the Trump administration to relocate alleged foreign gang members, as judges in Maryland only have the power to incarcerate people within the state. During the sentencing hearing on Monday, members of Morin's family, including four of her children, aged nine, 12, 15 and 20, issued tearful statements about how the death of their mother had affected them. 'She was a good mom,' her son said, according to WBALTV. 'Every time I see a picture of her, I think about the life I had with her and my four sisters. I miss her.' Morin's eldest daughter, who is now a mother herself, asked the prosecutor to read her written statement on her behalf. 'I had to relive the worst two days of my life in order to write this,' she said, describing her mother as 'kind, strong, honest, determined and funny'. Patty, Morin's mother, said that she had been suffering with nightmares, insomnia and anxiety attacks ever since her daughter was killed 'The depths of grief are equivalent to the depths of love felt. This will impact generations to come,' she said. 'Immigration system failure' Jeff Gahler, the Harford County Sheriff, blasted the immigration system for allowing Martinez-Hernandez to enter the country despite his criminal record. 'The failure here, again, is the immigration system that allowed this person to enter our country illegally and remain in our country and commit crimes in Los Angeles and then here in Harford County,' Mr Gahler said, according to The Daily Mail. 'We all suspected that Rachel was not his first victim. It is my understanding that this suspect, this monster, fled to the United States illegally after committing the brutal murder of a young woman in El Salvador a month earlier in January of 2023.' After Hernandez was convicted, Mr Trump paid tribute on social media to the 'beautiful mother of five' who had been 'heinously murdered'. 'Moments ago, the Illegal Criminal, who was allowed into our Country by Crooked Joe Biden, was convicted of the heinous murder of Rachel Morin,' he wrote on Truth Social at the time. 'Rachel was a beautiful mother of five from Maryland, and her life was taken at the hands of a monster who should have NEVER been here in the first place.'

Peace cannot be ‘imposed upon' Ukraine, Starmer says
The US president and his Russian counterpart are set to meet in Alaska this week to discuss the future of the Kremlin's invasion. In a phone call on Monday with Mark Carney, the Prime Minister and Canada's leader agreed Ukraine's future 'must be one of freedom, sovereignty and self-determination'. It comes after Mr Trump signalled he thinks Ukraine might need to cede territory in order to end the conflict. A Downing Street spokesperson said: 'The Prime Minister spoke to the prime minister of Canada Mark Carney this afternoon. 'They discussed their unwavering support for Ukraine and ongoing work to stop the killing, and end Russia's war of aggression. 'Both leaders underscored that Ukraine's future must be one of freedom, sovereignty and self-determination. 'They welcomed continued international efforts, led by President Trump, to bring peace and agreed that this must be built with Ukraine, not imposed upon it. 'Both leaders agreed they would continue to work closely with President Trump and President Zelensky over the coming days. They agreed to stay in touch.' Earlier on Monday, No 10 had backed Mr Trump's interventions over the war but warned that Mr Putin cannot be trusted 'as far as you can throw him'. Asked whether Sir Keir believes the Russian president could be trusted in negotiations, the Prime Minister's official spokesman said the UK supported both Kyiv and the US president's push for peace, but not Moscow. 'Never trust President Putin as far as you could throw him, but we obviously will support Ukraine,' he said. 'We will obviously support President Trump and European nations as we enter these negotiations. 'But it is exactly why we've been leading this work on the coalition of the willing, because any ceasefire, as I say, cannot just be an opportunity for President Putin to go away, re-arm, restrengthen, and then go again. 'So we're not going to leave it to trust. We're going to ensure that we're prepared such that we achieve a ceasefire.' Planning for the so-called coalition of the willing, which would involve a European-led peacekeeping force sent to Ukraine to monitor any future truce, began in March. Downing Street said 'operational planning continues at a military level' despite no talks between leaders planned for this week, but indicated that there was little left to finalise. Another week has ended without any attempt by Russia to agree to the numerous demands of the world and stop the killings. In just the past 24 hours on the front, there have been 137 combat engagements, and this is the case every day. The Russian army is not reducing its pressure.… — Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський (@ZelenskyyUa) August 11, 2025 Asked whether work relating to the coalition had been put on hold to keep the road clear for Washington-led mediation this week, the Prime Minister's spokesman said: 'No… if anything, the next step really is reaching that ceasefire, such that we're then able to implement the security guarantees.' European leaders including Sir Keir said the path to peace for Kyiv 'cannot be decided without Ukraine' and the current line of contact between Russia and Ukraine could only be a 'starting point of negotiations'. In a joint statement, the leaders of Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Finland and the European Commission said: 'Ukraine has the freedom of choice over its own destiny. 'Meaningful negotiations can only take place in the context of a ceasefire or reduction of hostilities. 'The path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine. 'We remain committed to the principle that international borders must not be changed by force.' The statement comes a day after Mr Trump announced that he would meet Mr Putin in Alaska on Friday, as he seeks an end to a conflict he had promised he could finish on his first day in office. The US president had earlier suggested that any peace deal was likely to involve 'some swapping of territories', with reports suggesting this could involve Ukraine giving up its Donetsk region. But President Volodymyr Zelensky has already rejected any proposal that would compromise Ukraine's territorial integrity, something that is forbidden by Ukraine's constitution. He said Mr Putin wanted to 'exchange a pause in the war, in the killing, for the legalisation of the occupation of our land – he wants to get territorial spoils for the second time'. Mr Zelensky added: 'We will not allow this second attempt to partition Ukraine. 'Knowing Russia, where there is a second, there will be a third.'
