Explosion rocks US airbase in Japan's Okinawa; 4 injured
An explosion occurred at a Japanese military facility inside a US airbase in Okinawa, officials said, with local media reporting non-life-threatening injuries.
A defence ministry spokesman said they had received reports of an explosion at the Japan Self-Defence Forces (SDF) facility inside Kadena Air Base in the southern Japanese region.
Jiji Press and other local media said four injuries had been reported, but none were life-threatening.
Public broadcaster NHK said, citing unnamed defence ministry sources, that the explosion may have occurred at a temporary storage site for unexploded bombs, with officials trying to confirm the situation.
'We've heard there was an explosion at the SDF facility and also heard there were injuries but we don't have further details,' said Yuta Matsuda, a local official of Yomitan village in Okinawa.

Israeli army has identified body of Hamas' Gaza chief Mohammed Sinwar, military says
The Israeli military said on Sunday that it had located and identified the body of Mohammed Sinwar, presumed leader of the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza, three weeks after he was said to have been killed in an air strike. 'In a targeted operation of the IDF [military] … and following the completion of an identification process, it is now confirmed that the body of Mohammed Sinwar was located in the underground tunnel route beneath the European Hospital in Khan Younis,' the army said in a statement. The army said Sinwar was 'eliminated', along with several other members of the militant group, on May 13. 'During searches in the underground tunnel route, several items belonging to Sinwar ... were located, along with additional intelligence findings that were transferred for further investigation,' the military said. Army spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin told journalists who were escorted by Israeli forces to the site on Sunday that Sinwar's body was found 'underneath the hospital, right under the emergency room, a compound, a few rooms'. He added that they had confirmed with 'DNA checks and other checks' that the body was indeed Mohammed Sinwar's.

Body of Thai hostage Nattapong Pinta recovered by Israeli military
Israel says it has retrieved the body of a Thai hostage kidnapped into Gaza on October 7, 2023, as it continues its military offensive across the strip, killing at least 22 people overnight, according to health officials. Advertisement The Prime Minister's office said on Saturday that the body of Thai citizen Nattapong Pinta was returned to Israel in a special military operation. Pinta was kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz and killed in captivity near the start of the war, said the government. This comes two days after the bodies of two Israeli-American hostages were retrieved. Fifty-five hostages remain in Gaza, of whom Israel says more than half are dead. The defence minister said on Saturday that Pinta's body was retrieved from the Rafah area. He had come to Israel from Thailand to work in agriculture. Advertisement The army said he was taken into Gaza by the Mujahideen Brigades, the small armed group that it said had also abducted and killed Shiri Bibas and her two small children. It is also the same group that took the two Israeli-American hostages, Judith Weinstein and Gad Haggai, whose bodies were retrieved by the army on Thursday.
