Town roars with ‘biggest ride out yet' in memory of Ryan Passey

Yahoo5 days ago
STOURBRIDGE roared with the sound of motorcyclists revving their engines in what has been described as the 'biggest turnout yet' for the annual Ride for Justice in memory of Ryan Passey.
This week (August 6) marked eight years since Ryan was stabbed to death in Chicago's nightclub in Stourbridge, aged just 24.
From the pain of losing the Quarry Bank tradesman and footballer, the Justice for Ryan Campaign was launched, to fight to ensure those responsible for Ryan's death are held accountable, along with the annual Ride for Justice to honour Ryan's memory, which began in 2018.
Hundreds of bikers descended on The Widders pub in Cradley this morning (August 9) before beginning their procession, riding five laps around Stourbridge Ring Road before travelling down the high street to pass the site of the former nightclub.
Jason Connon from the Justice for Ryan campaign said it was the 'biggest turnout [they've] had since launching the Ride for Justice event.'
He said: 'For Ryan's parents and family, the past eight years continue to be a traumatic roller coaster of emotions, faced with persistent challenges in trying to finally achieve justice and closure for Ryan and all the family.
'We are in no doubt about the challenges and complexity of finally achieving justice for Ryan, but we remain as determined today as we were back in February 2018 to achieve justice.
'We continue to liaise closely with detectives from West Midlands Police and remain hopeful to be able to deliver significant news regarding our fight and campaign for Justice for Ryan in the near future.
'For now, we continue to remain dignified as a family. We fight on in memory of our beautiful Ryan. Eight years on, we still grieve and miss our Ryan dearly.'

Ryan's family wished to pass on their "heartfelt" thanks to everyone who turned up in support of today's Ride for Justice, and offered a 'massive' thank you to their lifelong family friend, John Hill, who organises the ride-out events.
'It's clear from the turnout and support that everyone wants to see justice done," Mr Connan added.
A man who was accused of Ryan's murder walked free from court after being found not guilty by a jury of murder and manslaughter in 2018, despite having admitted in court that he 'stabbed out' at Ryan as trouble flared.
West Midlands Police reopened the investigation into Ryan's death two years ago, after an independent review into its original investigation found 18 recommendations the force was urged to follow.

Urgent warning issued as dangerous fake Labubu dolls flood UK market

Fake Labubu dolls that could pose a choking hazard for young children have flooded the UK market, a consumer standards body has warned. Legitimate Labubu toys, created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung and sold by Chinese toymaker Pop Mart, have become a viral and profitable sensation around the world. The palm-sized plushie, which has a bunny body, elf-like face and sharp teeth, is so popular that genuine versions are becoming increasingly difficult to come by. In May, Pop Mart announced that it was temporarily suspending all in-store sales of the collectible across the UK following chaotic scenes of crowd surges and reported fights. Last week, thieves in the Los Angeles area broke into a store and made off with thousands of dollars worth of stock. The toy's massive popularity has led to a wave of fakes, and many have been deemed unsafe, according to Britain's Chartered Trading Standards Institute. In a warning it described as 'urgent' on its website, the CTSI reported that thousands of dangerous counterfeits have been seized by their teams across the country, often as a result of complaints from parents. 'Counterfeit Labubu dolls are poorly made and unsafe,' the news release warned. 'Many contain small, detachable parts such as eyes, hands, and feet, which present a serious choking hazard to young children. Loose stitching and exposed stuffing further increase the risk of suffocation.' It added: 'Without proper safety checks, they may also contain toxic substances such as lead, harmful dyes, or banned plasticisers.' Last month, CNN reported on the massive production of fake Labubus in China, with the cheap copycats dubbed 'Lafufus.' Chinese customs officials are said to have seized many thousands of these that were intended for export since June alone. Consumers can tell if a doll is genuine by certain markers, including a holographic Pop Mart sticker, a scannable QR code linking to the company's website and a UV stamp on one of the feet. These are 'commonly missing or poorly replicated' on fakes, the CTSI said. Another tell-tale sign can be the number of teeth. Genuine dolls have nine, while fakes may vary. Overly vibrant colors and poor stitching can also indicate the doll is not the real deal. Kerry Nicol, external affairs manager at CTSI, said in the release that the demand has been 'amplified' by social media. 'Supply and demand means that legitimate Labubu dolls are almost impossible to find,' she said. 'These fake products bypass the rigorous safety checks and compliance requirements the law demands, meaning they could contain choking hazards, toxic materials, or faulty components that put children at serious risk. Everyone involved in the supply chain – from manufacturers and fulfilment houses to sellers and marketplaces should have a role to play in ensuring unsafe toys never reach the hands of children.' Pop Mart have been contacted for comment. Olivia Kemp contributed to this report.

Tottenham condemns racist abuse of Mathys Tel after UEFA Super Cup

LONDON (AP) — Tottenham has slammed the "cowards" who racially abused French forward Mathys Tel after the team's loss to Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shootout in the UEFA Super Cup. The 20-year-old Tel, who is Black, was one of two Tottenham players who failed to convert their penalties as they lost the shootout 4-3 to PSG after a 2-2 draw. 'We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night's UEFA Super Cup defeat," Tottenham said in a statement. 'Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards — hiding behind anonymous user names and profiles to spout their abhorrent views." Tottenham said the club will work with the authorities and social media platforms to take 'the strongest possible action against any individual we are able to identify.' 'We stand with you, Mathys,' Spurs added. Tel, who joined the team on a permanent basis from Bayern Munich in the offseason after a loan spell last season, came on as a substitute in the 79th minute when Tottenham was 2-0 ahead. He hit his penalty wide of the goal in the shootout. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press
