I am so proud of our club's power of giving and the bright future it continues to build.'
Rotary member Bill Stengel mentioned the club's unique standing during the ceremony. 'The Rock Island Rotary Club is one of the few clubs nationwide with its own foundation.' The foundation was established in 2008 with a $200,000 bequest from the Stan Harris Estate, and has since grown to over $800,000, with a target of $1 million by 2028, the foundation's 20th anniversary. On Wednesday, council members approved money from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) for Humility Homes and Services, Vera French, Project NOW and the redevelopment of the west end of the city, as well as the Rockingham Corridor. They amended the resolution to enable each alderman and the mayor $10,000 to spend on community projects of their choice. Project NOW hosts Rock Island discussion for landlords to help prevent homelessness

Project NOW held an open discussion with Quad City landlords Thursday at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center in Rock Island to get the landlords help in housing people who are experiencing homeless. (Gavin Waidelich, Project NOW wants to use programs like Permanent Supportive Housing and Rapid Re-Housing, which gives money to help cover the costs of giving people a place to stay. Project NOW says it will need landlords' support to continue to do so. 'Landlords are a key to this. They have properties, they have individuals coming and going at times,' said Project NOW Executive Director Dwight Ford. 'How do we take advantage of the vacancies they have? How do they take advantage of the resources that follow our tenants? How do we create this network that actually works?' Some landlords have already implemented these programs, but they are not sure it's enough to fix the issue. 'I've been doing this program, a couple programs, for quite a while. I've had great success. I've got some great people, but I also had a lot of problems too,' said Mark Griffin, a landlord based in Rock Island. One of their biggest concerns is when people experiencing homelessness move into their properties, not enough is being done to support residents afterward. That leads to people becoming trapped in a cycle of homelessness. To follow up with residents 'would be a big step. I mean not just throwing the money out that they get for these grants,' said Griffin. 'To follow up with them would go a long way, and that would make it more assuring for more landlords to be willing to try this program out.' Project NOW will continue these conversations to try to reach a solution. 'If we keep coming together, I guarantee you the asset value that we have in the collective room can actually, perhaps, solve most of our problems,' said Ford. Copyright 2024 Nexstar Media, Inc.
