GothamChess addresses viral drama over Emil Sutovsky's tweet: 'It should change.. now I look like an egocentric idiot'

A major controversy in the chess community has sparked discussions this week, putting International Master Levy Rozman in hot water after he made a comment about his fame. It further escalated when Emil Sutovsky, FIDE CEO, weighed in, leading to a feud.
The entire drama involved perceptions of players' fame in the game and online creators' influence. Rozman now has stepped forward with the pointed response, clarifying his stance on this escalating situation.
GothamChess
claims misrepresentation of the post, calling it out of context
Levy Rozman has finally addressed the ongoing drama which was ignited after a critical tweet by Emil Sutovsky. It's asserted by him that his non-controversial statement that was made on the global chess recognition was ripped from its original context, leading to a widespread misinterpretation.
"This image and quote is quite out of context, which is annoying, but understandable,"
Rozman stated as he expressed his frustration at how his words got spread online.
GothamChess further clarified his intention, which was not self-aggrandizement. He explained,
"My quote was a reference to... speaking to an athlete (casual chess fan) who could only name myself, Magnus, and Hikaru as chess."
My Response To The Allegations
The International Master further emphasized he was trying to highlight a problem. He said,
"I was simply making the point that it's unfortunate if someone can only name us 3 as chess players, and it should change.
But of course, now I look like an egocentric idiot."
He conceded this label might at times fit, but he argued it was definitely undeserved in the instance.
Discussing the original comment that sparked the entire drama
'That's Not My Fault' – GothamChess Fires Back in Chess Drama!
The ongoing controversy can be traced back to the interview Rozman gave during one of his recent European tours. An individual reportedly expressed difficulty following up professional chess and claimed familiarity with only 3 figures worldwide:
Magnus Carlsen
Hikaru Nakamura, and
Levy Rozman
Rozman presented the anecdote not as a boast but as evidence of some significant accessibility gap that exists within chess.
The core argument of the player, before the quote gained traction, was actually centered on the struggle of the game to promote a diverse array of top players to a mainstream audience, much beyond dedicated fans. He even saw the limitation within recognition as a barrier to a player's broad growth.
Emil Sutovsky challenged the streamer's perfection and influence
The drama escalated when Emil Sutovsky, the CEO of the global governing body of chess, shared Rozman's isolated quote on social media. Posting the image, he questioned the fans,
"Do you agree with that? I don't - but maybe that's because my bubble consists of hardcore chess fans."
He even directly critiqued Rozman's viewpoint as
"extremely US-centric,"
reflecting regional bias.
Further, Sutovsky even cast doubt on YouTubers' and chess streamers' current impact, suggesting their significance has decreased compared to the previous years. He stated, "
I also feel, that in general streamers/youtubers impact on the game is much less significant than it used to be few years ago,"
acknowledging he
"might err."
His comments prompted a flood of reactions, debating chess popularity's true drivers today.
Chess Community reacts to Emil Sutovsky's stance
Sutovsky doubled down in the follow-up tweet that quite subtly compared Rozman to Sagar Shah (ChessBase India), suggesting that Shah's content creates
"hardcore chess fans"
and not just some casual viewers. It further sparked more debates on whether chess's popularity should be measured by the mass appeal or its dedicated engagement.
Rozman did fire back and defended content creators and their roles within growing chess. He argued that without any accessible figures, including himself, there would be many fans who would not engage with the game at all. On the other hand, Shah took a diplomatic stance, praising creators and FIDE for pushing the game of chess forward.
The entire drama highlights a very deep divide between whether or not chess requires mainstream influencers or any traditional ambassadors to thrive. For now, the debate is still raging without any resolution. But hopefully, it will soon come to an end.

Mexico President Criticises Chicharito For Sexist Remarks: 'Has A Lot To Learn'

Last Updated: Mexican footballer Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez is facing criticism from President Claudia Sheinbaum for sexist comments. Mexican football star Javier 'Chicharito" Hernandez is facing criticism from Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum and others for comments about gender roles posted on his social media accounts. 'Chicharito is a very good soccer player," Sheinbaum stated at a news conference Wednesday. 'But when it comes to his opinion on women … he still has a lot to learn." She characterised the former Mexico international's views as 'very sexist." The former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker, currently playing for Chivas, is injured and missed the first two matches of Mexico's Apertura tournament. Over the weekend, he shared several reels and videos, primarily on Instagram. 'Don't be afraid to be women, to allow yourselves to be led by a man," the 37-year-old Hernandez said. 'Women, you are failing, you are eradicating masculinity, making society hypersensitive." Hernandez, the all-time leading scorer for the Mexican national team with 52 goals, returned to Mexico last year on a two-year deal with Chivas, the team where he began his professional career in 2006. 'You women need to learn to accept and honor masculinity," he said in another one of his posts. In another video, he stated: 'You want a man to provide, but for you, cleaning is patriarchal oppression… interesting." Sheinbaum, a 63-year-old scientist, became the first female president in the country's 200-year history last year. 'I'm a mother, I'm a grandmother, I'm also a housewife," the president added Wednesday. 'But I'm also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. Women can be whatever we want." Hernandez is a divorced father of two who often kneels in the middle of the pitch to pray before matches. He began creating content for a YouTube channel, showcasing his life as a player with West Ham and his marriage. Hernandez had a low profile on social media before hiring life coach Diego Dreyfus, to whom many attribute much of 'Chicharito's" new persona. His recent statements have sparked criticism, with some urging him to focus on football, considering his performance since returning to the Mexican league last year has not met expectations. Hernandez, who also played for Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham, and Sevilla, has scored just two goals in 25 matches in his first two tournaments back in Mexico. A few hours after the president's remarks, Hernandez was fined by the Gender and Diversity Commission of the Mexican Soccer Federation and by Chivas. 'A few days ago, on the social platform Javier Chicharito Hernández made statements that promote sexist stereotypes that are considered media violence and go against gender equality in the sport," a statement from the federation said. The federation did not disclose the amount of the fine but warned of a more severe penalty if he repeats the offense. Chivas didn't mention Hernandez by name when announcing its fine, only stating that the team opposes 'behavior that reinforces stereotypes that limit the freedom, respect, and full development of all people, both inside and outside of sports." This is the first time the federation has sanctioned a player for misogynistic comments. Earlier this year, businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego, the owner of the Mazatlán and Puebla clubs, made harsh statements about female journalists and was left unpunished. Chicharito has been banned from the national team since 2019 after he, along with other players, organised an unauthorised party in New York following a game against the United States. Ahaan Panday's Lavish Mumbai Mansion: Trees, Fingerprint Scanners And Sibling Banter

Last Updated: Ahaan Panday's four-storey Mumbai mansion blends luxury, family warmth, and leafy charm with a side of sibling humour and fingerprint scanners. Before Ahaan Panday hit the big screen with his debut in Saiyaara, he was already living like a star in a sprawling Mumbai home that oozes charm, luxury, and a healthy dose of family nostalgia. In a 2023 home tour video, Ahaan's sister and content creator Alanna Panday walked viewers through their opulent four-storey residence, the same space that played host to her dreamy wedding ceremonies from the engagement and haldi to the bridal shower. 'If you've watched our YouTube videos, you might recognise this space," she said, standing in the same area where the family's most special memories were made. A House Full of Pandays And Plants The Panday household isn't just home to Ahaan, Alanna, and their parents, Deanne and Chikki Panday. The extended family including Chunky and Bhavna Panday, and their daughters Ananya and Rysa are frequent fixtures too. Unsurprisingly, the house has also made an appearance in The Tribe, the Amazon Prime Video series. Right from the entrance, it's clear that this isn't your typical celebrity residence. Guests are greeted with a grand courtyard featuring a long dining table set against a lush green backdrop. 'We're all plant lovers," Alanna said, pointing out that even the seating area is built around a tree. Her dad, ever the planner, has also built on-site flats for the house staff — a testament to both practicality and hospitality. Design Meets Drama (and a Pet-Friendly Pool) As Alanna walks through the house, she pauses at a decorative indoor pool — intentionally kept dry. 'The pets think it's theirs," she laughs. Two massive living rooms face one another across the house, while a formal dining room (rarely used) adds a traditional touch. Natural light floods in through a specially angled skylight — designed to brighten without overheating the space. Security, however, is serious business. 'My dad is a little paranoid," she jokes, revealing a network of security cameras and fingerprint scanners keeping the mansion locked down. The house even includes a game room that, in Alanna's words, 'doesn't really match the rest of the house." But that contrast just adds to the charm, a mix of luxe and laid-back. Ahaan's Sneaky Cameo While the home tour focused on interiors, viewers got a playful glimpse of the Saiyaara star himself. When Alanna tries to open his door, Ahaan cheekily shuts it and says, 'You want to show everyone my room? It's very beautiful right now. Just give me one second." Spoiler: he never opens the door, and Alanna walks off laughing. Where Family Gathers Most The third floor has a gorgeous balcony overlooking the lush front yard. Once an open terrace, it's now been transformed into the most lived-in part of the house — where the Pandays come together, relax, and reconnect when everyone's in town. This house is more than just luxe interiors and security tech, it's a lively family hub full of memories, plants, pets, and just the right amount of drama. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
