Two nations, one future: Aroon Purie at India Today's Indo-UAE Conclave
India and the UAE share a relationship that is time-tested, multi-dimensional, and future-ready, India Today Group's Chairman and Editor-in-Chief Aroon Purie said while addressing India Today's Indo-UAE Conclave in Dubai on Thursday. He added India and the UAE share a partnership that is not only growing, but it is evolving."The India-UAE relationship is beyond economics, it is a time-tested cultural bridge, he said, adding that the relationship is "deeply cultural, emotional, and human." He noted that over 3.5 million Indians call the UAE their home, and they are stakeholders in the UAE's growth.advertisement"The India-UAE partnership offers a rare constant: a relationship based on trust, pragmatism, and mutual benefit," Aroon Purie said at the landmark gathering of policymakers, business leaders, and innovators shaping the future of India-UAE collaboration. Here's his full speech:Ladies and gentlemen, Distinguished guests, Friends from India and the UAE,Good morning, and a very warm welcome to the inaugural India Today India-UAE Conclave in the magnificent city of Dubai.I first came to Dubai in 1970, which is 55 years ago. I was invited to set up a printing press for the government here. As you can imagine, there was very little here at that time. Even some of the government offices were in cabins, the kind used at construction sites. Now, when I see the UAE, I regard it as one of the miracles of the world. The transformation of a desert into one of the world's most advanced cosmopolitan cities. Dubai and Abu Dhabi in particular.advertisementIt is symbol of what ambition, vision, leadership and technology can do.I congratulate the rulers of UAE past and present for giving this miracle to the world. For over two decades, the India Today Conclaves have hosted thought leaders, change makers, and global voices to reflect on the India story. Today, that story is expanding its canvas from South Asia to West Asia. From the local to the truly global. We have gathered here to celebrate what we call 'India and the UAE — two nations, one future'. And what better city than Dubai, this bold, visionary metropolis that reflects the very spirit of transformation, connectivity and ambition that we aim to spotlight in the India-UAE relationship. Much like India, this country is diverse, dynamic, and determined to define the future on its own terms. I firmly believe that the India-UAE story is one of the most underappreciated diplomatic achievements of the 21st century. We are here not just as observers of a bilateral relationship. We are here as participants in a growing partnership. One that has moved far beyond trade into shared aspirations, cultural embrace, and geopolitical convergence.India and the UAE share a relationship that is time-tested, multi-dimensional, and future-ready.advertisementFrom flourishing trade to growing cultural bonds. From political alignment to strategic convergence, this is a partnership that is not only growing, but it is evolving.India and the UAE have long enjoyed strong trade relations. The UAE is India's third-largest trading partner, and India is the UAE's second-largest export destination. Bilateral trade has already crossed $83 billion, and is expected to surge past $100 billion within this decade. But numbers only tell part of the story. We are moving beyond transactional ties into an era of transformational synergy. The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) has redefined the scale and speed of bilateral trade. Since tariffs are the hot topic of the day, here is an example of how to do it.Both countries have eliminated duties; the UAE has cleaned up 97.4% of its tariff lines, corresponding to 99% of imports from India. India reciprocated by eliminating duties on over 80% of its tariff lines, covering 90% of its exports in value terms. The trust is deepening and strengthening the friendship between the two countries. Cross-border investments are flowing across a diverse set of sectors—from clean energy to fintech, logistics to AI, space technology to food security. advertisementIn the last 25 years, India has received cumulative FDI worth more than $22 billion from the UAE, making it the 7th largest investor in India. Like a true friend, Indians are also betting on the story of the transformation of the UAE.We live in an era where globalisation is being redefined, multilateralism is on the retreat and regionalism is on the rise.Great power rivalries have re-emerged in Eastern Europe, the Indo-Pacific, and West Asia.Amid this flux, the India-UAE partnership offers a rare constant: a relationship based on trust, pragmatism, and mutual benefit. At the G20 Summit, hosted by India, the UAE was a prominent voice in forging a new economic corridor - the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) connecting India to Europe via the Middle East a project that is not just about infrastructure, but about re-imagining supply chains, data flows, and energy routes in the 21st century. In climate diplomacy, both countries are collaborating to shape the green agenda with India's renewables push and the UAE's hosting of COP28 forming a timely convergence. The subsea cable will be an epitome of the energy friendship.India-UAE partnership is not stuck in the past it is leaping into the future. We are seeing innovation in fintech, digital payments, and emerging tech and education. advertisementThe India-UAE relationship is beyond economics, it is a time-tested cultural bridge. It is deeply cultural, emotional, and human. Over 3.5 million Indians call the UAE their home. They are not migrants. They are stakeholders in UAE's growth.Bollywood thrives here. Cricket unites us, and Indian cuisine spices up the Emirati palette. The UAE is home to the only Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi, and India is home to one of the oldest mosques in Kerala. This is civilisational coexistence in action.India Today is proud to host this Conclave here in Dubai. We believe that meaningful partnerships thrive on dialogue, transparency, and mutual understanding. In a world of polarised narratives and fractured facts, the role of credible journalism and forums like this becomes even more vital. This Conclave is our modest attempt to bring that story into the spotlight. Not just to celebrate it, but to build upon it. It is the beginning of a deeper conversation about what two ambitious nations can achieve when they trust, trade, and think together.Thank you for being part of this journey.advertisementLet the dialogue begin.Jai Hind. Shukran. Dhanyavaad.

"US constantly bullying India in name of trade, Modi government is silent": Congress' Supriya Shrinate
New Delhi [India], June 10 (ANI): Congress leader Supriya Shrinate on Tuesday said the Donald Trump administration is constantly 'bullying' India in the name of trade, adding that the Modi government is silent against the threats being made by the United States. Speaking to ANI, Shrinate also pointed out that Indian students are facing issues with the admission procedure in the US, highlighting that a huge visa backlog has been created. 'Our students' visas are not being processed, a backlog is being created. The reality is that the admissions of our students are being cancelled. Another reality is that 682 Indians were deported to India, handcuffed, in military planes by America. The reality is that Donald Trump has taken credit for the ceasefire 12 times. Again and again, he says that he threatened India in the name of trade. I feel that the United States is constantly bullying and insulting us, and the Modi government is silent,' Shrinate told ANI. Earlier on May 31, US President Donald Trump claimed credit for brokering the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan, asserting that he used trade as a negotiation tactic. Speaking at the Oval Office during an event marking Elon Musk's departure from his advisory role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Trump said, 'We stopped India and Pakistan from fighting. I believe that could have turned out into a nuclear disaster, and I want to thank the leaders of India and Pakistan, and I want to thank my people. Also, we talk trade, and we say we can't trade with people who are shooting at each other and potentially using nuclear weapons. They're great leaders in those countries, and they understood and they agreed.' Meanwhile, India has clarified that the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan took place on May 10 following contacts between the two DGMOs and while there were conversations between Indian and US leaders on the evolving situation since Operation Sindoor was launched, the issue of trade or tariff did not come up in any of those discussions. (ANI) On video of an Indian student handcuffed and pinned to the floor at an airport in the United States that went viral on social media., Shrinate said, 'He is a young student who went to America with the hope of building his future. But the way he was treated -- the way he was slammed and thrashed, the way he was handcuffed, the way he was trampled under boots, the way he was deported -- why is he being treated like an animal? This is happening to our students continuously.' In this regard, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday criticised the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government and accused it of 'failing' to protect and safeguard the dignity of India and Indians abroad. Bern [Switzerland], June 10 (ANI): Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal addressed Swiss industry leaders and innovators on Tuesday at the prestigious Swissmem Industry Day in Switzerland. Highlighting India's transformative growth story and vast opportunities for collaboration, Goyal extended a warm invitation to the Swiss business community to be active partners in India's journey towards becoming a USD 30-35 trillion economy by 2047, the Ministry of Commerce & Industry said in a release. Speaking at an event, Goyal said, 'I come to meet you with the aspirations of 1.4 billion Indians who dream as high as your towering Alps and who desire a better future. I come with an arm of friendship to the talented engineers, innovators, and entrepreneurs of Switzerland.' In a symbolic gesture of partnership, Goyal proposed the creation of a dedicated Swiss Enclave in India--a zone tailored for Swiss businesses--to provide comfort and a sense of home for Swiss enterprises looking to establish a base in India. As per the release, the Minister highlighted India's remarkable transformation--from a USD 270 billion economy 30 years ago to a USD 4 trillion economy today--and its ambition to grow further to USD 30-35 trillion as the nation approaches 100 years of independence. He noted India's youthful demographic with an average age of 28.4 years and emphasised that the nation will continue to remain young and vibrant for decades to come. Goyal underlined the advantages of India as a trusted, rule-of-law-based, and democratic country where Swiss businesses can operate without fear of discrimination. 'Democracy, demographic dividend, decisive leadership, and diversity make India a dependable partner,' he said. Referring to the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), Goyal termed it a 'Trust and Efficiency Partnership'--a relationship built on mutual confidence and complementarity. He expressed optimism that this partnership would mark the beginning of a new era of cooperation between India and the four EFTA nations, opening new avenues for trade, investment, and innovation. 'I particularly invite Switzerland's SME sector to witness India's remarkable evolution over the last decade. This will give you the confidence we aspire for,' stated the Minister. He highlighted that in the past 10 years, India has added 80 new airports, including a new one in partnership with Zurich Airport. 'Our port capacity has doubled, and national highways and expressways are now comparable to those in Germany. We've also added 104 new inland waterways and doubled our power generation capacity, with solar energy capacity growing 50 times. The government's annual expenditure of over $125 billion on infrastructure creates a powerful multiplier effect for India's growth story.' India's robust education ecosystem was also highlighted. The Minister pointed out that the country produces the highest number of STEM graduates globally, 43 per cent of whom are women. 'This talent pool, combined with scale and speed, makes India an ideal investment destination,' he said. Quoting World Bank data, Goyal noted that extreme poverty in India has fallen to just 5 per cent, down by 270 million people in the last 11 years, and is expected to be eliminated in the near future. He described India's growth model as a blend of welfare and consumption-led growth, backed by investments in manufacturing and technology. 'India today stands ready and willing to welcome global partners. We are a country on the move, full of opportunities,' he said. Goyal concluded by extending a personal invitation to the Swiss business community to visit India: 'Come discover India. Come experience Incredible India. Come witness the beauty and transformation of a nation that is emerging from the shadows and claiming its rightful place in the comity of nations,' added the release. (ANI)
