Paul McCartney, Carole King and Others Pay Tribute to Brian Wilson
Brian Wilson, the leader of the Beach Boys who death at 82 was announced on Wednesday, provided a joyous soundtrack for beach vacations and summer road trips for generations of people.
Among pop and rock musicians he will also be remembered as a talented songwriter and studio pioneer whose music has had an immense influence for decades on those who followed him.
The Beach Boys had 13 singles in the Billboard Top 10, with three of them reaching No. 1. Their influence on the surf rock genre and on popular music generally was recognized by the variety of people who paid respects on social media to Wilson on Wednesday.
Here's what some of Wilson's friends had to say about his death and legacy.
Paul McCartney, a Wilson contemporary, noted that there was a chorus of tributes from other musicians, saying Wilson had a 'mysterious sense of musical genius' that made his songs special. 'The notes he heard in his head and passed to us were simple and brilliant at the same time,' McCartney said. 'I loved him, and was privileged to be around his bright shining light for a little while. How we will continue without Brian Wilson, 'God Only Knows.''
Carole King, also a contemporary, wrote on Facebook that Wilson was her friend and brother in songwriting. 'We shared a similar sensibility, as evidenced by his 4 over 5 chord under 'Aaaah!' in 'Good Vibrations' and mine under 'I'm Into Something Good,'' she said. 'We once discussed who used it first, and in the end we decided it didn't matter.'
In 2015, 'Love & Mercy,' a biopic about Wilson's life starring John Cusack was released. On Wednesday, Cusack said that the 'maestro' had died, adding that the hitmaker was an open heart with two legs 'with an ear that heard the angels.'

Kendal Calling issue tribute to 'genius' Brian Wilson
Kendal Calling has issued a tribute following the death of The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson. Wilson was the eldest and last surviving of the three musical brothers who formed the American rock band in 1961, alongside their cousin Mike Love and school friend Al Jardine. The Beach Boys performed at the Cumbrian festival in 2017 alongside Stereophonics, Manic Street Preachers and Franz Ferdinand. A spokesperson for Kendal Calling said on Instagram: 'We are very sad to hear the news of Brian Wilson's passing. 'Genius is a term often overused but not in this instance. Undoubtedly one of the greatest songwriters of all time and a master of his craft. 'We had the pleasure of hosting Brian in the Deer Park back in 2017 - it was one of those real 'pinch me' moments getting to see his name on a Kendal Calling poster.'

Kim Cattrall says Sex and the City character Samantha isn't a nymphomaniac
Former Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall has challenged a common misconception about her much-loved character, Samantha Jones. The 68-year-old actor played the sexually voracious public relations executive on the series from 1990 to 2004, with Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis, taking on the roles of her best friends, Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte respectively. Cattrall's unapologetically promiscuous character – unmarried, by choice, in her forties – became something of a feminist icon but was commonly labelled a nymphomaniac due to her exploits. Speaking to The Times, Cattrall said: 'She wasn't a nymphomaniac – well, some people might have thought she was – but she was just enjoying the main course. Everyone else was nibbling on the appetisers when she was going for the steak. 'And it was always on her terms – that I always insisted on,' she added. 'But, I'm the antithesis of her [Samantha] in many ways. I'm a serial monogamist, and then some.' Cattrall married the Canadian writer Larry Davis when she was just 19. The marriage was annulled after two years. In her twenties, she married the German architect Andreas Lyson, which lasted seven years. In her early forties, Cattrall married for the third time – the musician Mark Levinson. In 2002, the couple wrote a book together: Satisfaction: The Art of the Female Orgasm but separated two years later. Cattrall reprised her character of Samantha Jones in the duo of Sex and the City feature films released in 2008 and 2010. She did not return for the show's reboot And Just Like That in 2021 amid reports of a feud between her and Parker and has since confirmed she will not appear in season three of the series. 'I created a fantastic character that I loved, and I put a lot of love in it,' Cattrall told The Times. 'And if I'm remembered only for that, then that's really OK.' The star turned down the role of Samantha four times before she accepted it. At 41, she didn't think audiences would see her as sexy. 'Self-inflicted ageism,' she reflected. 'Well, that changed – 40 became sexy. It became, 'Man, let's have more of that.''

The 'Full House' actor, who has been an honorary Beach Boy playing drums and guitar with the band for 40 years, was traveling with Love when he received the heartbreaking news. 'I was like, 'Oh boy, I guess I better [tell him].' I said, 'Mike, your cousin passed away,' and his face went blank.' 'And we sat in the car for two and a half hours or so … he didn't say one word,' he continued. 'And I didn't ask him anything, ask him how he was feeling. I knew how he was feeling.' Stamos first played with the Beach Boys four decades ago at the Washington Monument on the Fourth of July in 1985. 'This July 4th will be 40 years of nagging them and stalking them,' he said. Stamos feels blessed to have 'spent a good amount of time' with Wilson, recalling one special trip to Montreal. 'We were doing some shows in Montreal, I was with them, and Mike couldn't make about five shows,' he said. 'And so Brian came out, and he's the lead singer of the band … and it was great.' He continued, 'I've had a lot of honors in my life, a lot of good things, but this is maybe the greatest honor of my life, to be able to give this to him tonight. I think this is long overdue, Mike getting into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. 'Decency is at an all time low, and discord at an all time high,' he said, 'and we've never needed the Beach Boys music more.'
