
Hospitality workers experiencing 'horrendous harassment'
Hospitality workers have described harassment in the industry as "horrendous".It comes as a union has called for zero tolerance towards workplace harassment and free transport home for late shift workers.Unite the union has described sexual comments, unwanted advancements and degrading situations for staff.Branch secretary for Unite Hospitality Nathan Young said it was important for hospitality workers to say "no more".
Mr Young, who has worked in the sector for a decade, in cafes and fast-food outlets, said: "Some of these issues have been endemic and have been endemic in the industry for a very long time. "There hasn't been change. People come into the industry often young, often not really sure of their rights."The issues that I see now are the same issues that there were years ago. Even with larger societal changes around feminist issues or social issues, that kind of thing."
Mr Young said many young people begin working in hospitality, where they encounter bad experiences from customers and management. He said a number of issues have been raised by workers."It could be anything from making sexual comments repeatedly, making advances to people who have rejected people multiple times," he said. "There was one workplace we had where some of the chefs were keeping a list of most 'rapable' front of house staff."So it goes from some pretty mild stuff to some really, really horrendous stuff."Mr Young added: "Management's attitude is very often, 'comments were made outside at a work party so it doesn't concern that us', or 'they're good for the company', or 'we'll have a look into that', or 'you can't really prove that happened on work time'. "It's things that in any other industry you'd hope would be would be stamped out pretty quickly."
'Duty of care'
Fellow Unite member Ross Lopes-Lister said the union is calling for changes to licensing laws to include a responsibility to ensure night-time economy workers get home safely."We think it should be the employers responsibility and part of the licensing laws, that it's their duty of care, that they ensure that their workers get home safe," he said."This is the start of something bigger. There needs to be a cultural change, yes there needs to be a change within society that this sort of behaviour goes on full stop - but we have to start somewhere."
Eva Martin from Rosa, a socialist feminist organisation, has previously worked in hospitality."This conversation is long overdue," she said."It is very much a spectrum, it can range from comments to unwanted physical touch and that can be from both customers and colleagues and I think the realities of power dynamics that exist in hospitality - that's a huge issue that we need to tackle."Often most hospitality workers will have personal stories of having experienced abuse, or just unacceptable behaviour from customers. "Things that might be deemed throwaway comments but are acutely unacceptable and are rooted in sexism or misogyny or racism or transphobia, whatever it may be."
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said the union was "calling time" on harassment and would not accept workers being abused or "forced to walk home in fear". Neil Moore, lead regional officer for hospitality workers, said the union wanted to free transport made a condition of every new liquor and entertainment licence.

Kemi Badenoch has admitted she is still learning how to lead the Conservatives after seven months in job, amid dire poll ratings for the party. The Tory leader on Friday said 'it takes quite a while to learn how to do the job ' and that 'every week it gets better and better'. It came a day after her shadow chancellor promised she 'will get better', with the Conservatives tumbling in the polls and falling to fourth in a Scottish by-election on Thursday. 'Every week I have more experience, and this is what every leader of the opposition has found from Margaret Thatcher to David Cameron.' She added that lots will change before the next general election, highlighting the outbreak of Covid and the war in Ukraine in the last election cycle. And Ms Badenoch said: 'There is going to be so much more that people are going to see, not just from me, but from the Conservative Party. 'We were down at the last election, but we are not out.' It came as the Tory leader shifted her party decisively in favour of pulling Britain out of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), a stance her leadership rival Robert Jenrick has long called for the Conservatives to adopt. Ms Badenoch said the convention has become a "sword" to "attack democratic decisions", resulting in Britain being unable to police its borders and deport foreign criminals. 'This use of litigation as a political weapon is what I am calling lawfare. It isn't just damaging our security, it's also damaging our prosperity,' she said. She stopped short of vowing to adopt leaving the ECHR as policy, but said 'I do believe that we will likely need to leave'. And she said she had tasked a team of legal experts to look at how Britain could pull out of the convention and what the impact would be, promising to announce the results at the party's conference in October. Ms Badenoch all but guaranteed a set-piece moment at the Manchester meet in which she will formally call for Britain to ditch the ECHR. Delivering her speech in Westminster, Ms Badenoch also sought to stress that the Conservatives are still the main opposition to Labour, despite the party's dire performance in the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election. The Tories won just 6 per cent of the vote, with Labour fending off Reform UK and the SNP to win the seat. Answering questions after a speech on Friday, Mrs Badenoch dismissed Reform as a "protest party" and said claims it was the real opposition were "nonsense". Describing Reform as "another left-wing party", she said: "What they're trying to do is talk this situation into existence. "Labour is going to be facing the Conservative Party at the next election and we're going to get them out."

Woman dies after A36 motorbike crash
A second person has died following a crash involving a car and three motorbikes. A woman in her 60s, who was riding as a passenger on a motorcycle, suffered serious injuries after the incident on the A36 in Knook, Wiltshire, on Police has confirmed she has since died in Best, from Bradley Stoke on the outskirts of Bristol, was declared dead at the scene of the crash. Bull spotted loose on streets of Birmingham
A bull has been seen on the loose on the streets of Midlands Police said officers were made aware of it in the road near New Bond Street, in the Digbeth area, at about 09:30 BST on force added that it was working with Birmingham City Council to ensure the animal was taken to a safe is so far unclear where the bull came from.
