British acting legend new frontrunner to play Voldemort in Harry Potter reboot
HBO has already revealed the three young actors who will play Harry, Hermione and Ron, following in the footsteps of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.
Meanwhile, John Lithgow is set to play headmaster Albus Dumbledore, I May Destroy You star Paapa Essiedu will be Severus Snape, and Nick Frost has been cast as Hagrid.
But Potterheads are still waiting to find out who will star as the new Voldemort.
The current favourite to take on the role is Matthew Macfadyen, according to Online Betting Guide.
They put the Succession star at 1/1 odds, in news that comes shortly after the acclaimed actor was cast to play Voldemort in a new Harry Potter audiobook series.
The first of the seven full-cast audiobooks, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, will be released by Audible on November 4, followed by Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on December 16.
Meanwhile, former Doctor Who star Matt Smith and Marvel alum Paul Bettany are also tipped for the role of Voldemort in HBO's Harry Potter, both of whom enjoy 3/1 odds.
Coming in behind them is Peaky Blinders' Cillian Murphy at 4/1, who previously had something of an edge after the original Voldemort actor, Ralph Fiennes, gave him his blessing.
During an interview on Watch What Happens Live, Fiennes said: 'Cillian is a fantastic actor. That's a wonderful suggestion. I would be all in favour of Cillian. Yeah.' Who do you think would be the best Voldemort?
Tom Hiddleston is also in the running, with odds of 5/1 — though he was previously the favourite for the role.
No stranger to playing a baddie, Hiddleston is probably best known as Marvel's impish Loki.
Senior TV Reporter Rebecca Cook shares her take…
Tom Hiddleston's tenure as Loki in the Marvel franchise is riddled (get it) with moments proving he has a strong Voldemort performance in him. Think back to when he went full panto villain at Comic-Con in 2013, emerging from the dark with the audience eating out of the palm of his hand.
He's certainly capable of playing a charismatic villain – but there's the risk his charm may soften Voldemort's edges. After all, who didn't end up secretly loving Loki, even before we were meant to?
We want someone who's truly terrifying to play Voldemort. Hairs upright on the back of your neck type of thing.
Perhaps an actor like Idris Elba would be a better fit, admittedly not currently in the conversation, but with a commanding presence and The Wire's Stringer Bell as proof he knows how to play a complicated villain.
The show's confirmed cast, which includes Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, and Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, have been subject to immense scrutiny already.
Especially as Harry Potter creator (and the new HBO series' executive producer) JK Rowling's comments about the trans community have caused backlash from some groups.
In a recent interview, The Crown's Bertie Carvel, who will star as Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge, declined to discuss the author but did reflect on his future in the show.
'I am coming at it with a really open mind. Whether I come back [after the first series] probably depends on what the fans think. I mean, I'll be furious if it's not an amazing part.' More Trending
Meanwhile, Jason Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy in the original Harry Potter films, has defended the casting of Paapa Essiedu as Snape after he faced racist backlash on social media.
'I've seen some people online who are being rude about him. What they're being is racist,' he said in an interview with Collider.
The Harry Potter TV show will stream exclusively on Max in 2027.

Timothy Olyphant's life from early careers to marriage to college sweetheart
Timothy Olyphant's life from surprising early careers to marriage to college sweetheart Timothy Olyphant has had a fascinating life both on and off the screen, from his marriage to his connection to one of the richest families in America Actor Timothy Olyphant has enjoyed a captivating journey long before securing career-defining parts in Deadwood and Justified. Since then, he's garnered roles in significant productions including The Mandalorian, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Daisy Jones and the Six in recent years. Nevertheless, his upcoming performance in Noah Hawley's chilling precursor to the Alien franchise, Alien: Earth, might prove to be his most remarkable to date. Olyphant takes on the role of Kirsh, another of the series' notoriously unsettling androids, working alongside an outstanding ensemble cast featuring emerging talent Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, Essie Davis and Babou Ceesay. Yet what details can we uncover about the actor's existence beyond the camera? Continue reading to learn more. The performer recently disclosed he's a descendant of the affluent Vanderbilt dynasty of New York, making him also connected to CNN presenter Anderson Cooper. When questioned about this link by the Hollywood Reporter, he jested: "You're goddamn right I am, and somebody owes me money." Timothy Olyphant is related to Anderson Cooper through a shared connection to the Vanderbilt family (Image: GETTY) His fourth great-grandfather on his paternal side was industrial tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt. Nevertheless, Olyphant appears not to have inherited much from this family tie and acknowledges he's never encountered his relative, Cooper. "It's on my to-do list to head to upstate New York and see if I can get the keys to the house," he added. "I've never met Anderson. I assume that's just because I keep missing the family reunions due to work and the kids. But now that I'm an empty-nester, I hope we'll be having drinks soon." The actor has been married to his college sweetheart Alexis Knief since 1991 (Image: GETTY) Marriage to college sweetheart Olyphant not only wed his university girlfriend, Alexis Knief, in 1991, but they've remained together ever since for more than three decades. They have also welcomed three children throughout the years, including daughter Vivan who played his Justified character Raylan Givens's daughter Willa in the follow-up miniseries Justified: City Primeval. Alexis has backed her husband's career by bringing up their family away from the public eye. Revealing the secret to their relationship's endurance, Olyphant told Women's Health in 2011: "You have to be with the right person, and you both have to be willing to do the work, day in and day out, to make it happen." He has also praised her for keeping him grounded and regularly mentions her witty sense of humour during interviews. Nevertheless, he soon chose to relocate to New York to explore different opportunities, including a short period as a stand-up comedian. Regrettably, his unconventional comedic style didn't resonate with the audience and he found the erratic schedules of comedians challenging. And then the bombing started." Article continues below In addition to acting, Olyphant has pursued his love for sport. From 2006 to 2008, he contributed offbeat sports reports via phone to Joe Escalante's morning radio show in Los Angeles, where director David Lynch served as the station's weatherman. If you don't kiss your partner like Anthony Mackie, you're doing it wrong
Anthony Mackie has been spotted on the streets of Notting Hill with his hands on a mystery woman's bum – holding on tighter than a Marvel spandex suit clinging to Captain America's glutes. The actor seems to be enjoying his time as a visitor in the British capital – though it's not a cheeky Nandos or kebab he's got his mouth on, and he's unlikely to be seeing many landmarks with his eyes closed. The identity of the woman with whom Mackie was spotted in a passionate makeout on the street remains a mystery, but judging by their giggly, steamy back-and-forth, it's safe to say they've met before. She looks decidedly younger than 46-year-old Mackie, but given that the Dior saddle bag she's wearing in the pictures is worth just over £3,000, it's unlikely she's in London for a low-paid grad scheme or pouring pints at a Spoons. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier star is currently in London filming Marvel's much-hyped Avengers: Doomsday, which raises the question: Is the mystery blonde part of the production? A new co-star? Or just someone who happened to be in the vicinity and decided to give a whole new meaning to the concept of 'grabbing a Mackies' at the end of the night? This comes seven years after Mackie's divorce from Sheletta Chapital, with whom he shares four sons, in 2018. Since then, his dating life has been quieter than Hawkeye's solo box office numbers – making these new photos instant online currency. And the internet, as ever, has plenty of opinions. On Reddit, Agpearlstudios wrote: 'It's giving the drunk kiss I shared with some rando outside my college bar.' Dosgatitas was less nostalgic: 'Ew I can't unsee this!' And Hannahspants simply begged for mercy: 'Stop this is foul 😭' One user, Leading_Put-, nailed it: 'It's not one of them cinematic kisses..' Well, no, it's not cinematic. And that's a good thing, contrary to what Reddit would have you believe. We live in a world where porn creates unrealistic images of what sexuality should look like, Instagram kisses are filtered, and intimacy has been algorithmically sanitised. A good, real-life snog? It's supposed to be clumsy, overzealous, and just a touch horrifying to witness. And for God's sake, use your tongue! It's clear that Mackie knows we didn't survive the pandemic just for you to be stingy with your saliva. Honestly, the online reaction says more about us than it does about Mackie, because we may be witnessing something tragic: The slow extinction of the sloppy public makeout. There's nothing like a few drinks, a bit of flirty craic in a sticky booth, and the sheer animal urge to shove your tongue down someone's throat in a weirdly lit alleyway, smelly stairwell, or the guest bathroom of a friend-of-a-friend's house party. More Trending A messy snog is one of life's great joys, and we mustn't shame them. And look at that flirty little face Mackie is making at his mystery blonde! Sure, it looks cringey to us in the harsh fluorescent lights of our cubicles or when we scroll past it on our way to stalk our exes on Instagram, but in the context of the moment, you can bet she felt like the summer air in London was imbued with magic specifically for her. From the photos, this wasn't some 'look how hot we are' staged moment. It was full immersion: giggles, murmurs, forehead presses, and the kind of body contact that ignores camera angles and focuses entirely on surface area. Bottom line: If you're not kissing your partner like Anthony Mackie, you're doing it wrong. It's time to drop the Instagram pout and rediscover the unphotogenic magic of the proper, unapologetic snog. Got a story? Anchorman superstar Will Ferrell wows staff at Scots attraction
The Anchorman and Elf legend had been on a tour of Braemar Castle with family and friends. The 58-year-old kindly posed for pictures with starstruck staff during his visit. Hollywood superstar Will Ferrell surprised staff at a popular Scots tourist attraction today with the icon branded the "nicest man" by stunned workers. The Anchorman and Elf legend had been on a tour of Braemar Castle with family and friends. The 58-year-old kindly posed for pictures with starstruck staff during his visit. Ferrell, whose hit films include Blades of Glory and Step Brothers, was all smiles while posing with staff, who labelled him a "true gentleman", Aberdeen Live reports. The Castle's official Facebook page posted images of the snaps, adding: "Can we just get a little bit excited. The fabulous Will Ferrell paid us a visit this morning and we may have got a little bit fan girly around him. "They say to never meet your idols, but this man was a true gentleman and so interested in our work at Braemar Castle." Ferrell's visit to the north-east comes just days after he was spotted in Glasgow in the city's Miller Street. Speculation mounted that the A-Lister was in town for the new Spiderman movie which is currently being filmed in the city centre. But Ferrell poured cold water on those rumours as he reportedly told fans he was just visiting the city. The huge Marvel production for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is continuing until August 26, with eager fans lining the streets hoping to catch a glimpse of the action as it unfolds.
