Erik ten Hag suffers nightmare start at Bayer Leverkusen as Bundesliga side are thrashed 5-1 by Flamengo Under-20s in Brazil
Ten Hag was sacked by Manchester United last October after managing just three wins from their opening nine matches of the season.
The Dutchman was appointed by Leverkusen in May as successor to Xabi Alonso, who left to take charge at Real Madrid.
The Bundesliga side made the long trip to Brazil for Ten Hag's debut, facing Flamengo's youth side in their opening pre-season match.
The former Ajax boss named a strong starting XI, sticking with predecessor Alonso's title-winning 3-4-2-1 system.
Senior players including new goalkeeper Mark Flekken, Jonas Hofmann and Victor Boniface were all handed starts in Rio.
But it took just two minutes for things to go wrong, as Flamengo struck early before doubling their lead inside ten.
A third goal followed moments later and, just as Ten Hag looked to limit the damage, a fourth hit the net on the stroke of half-time.
The new boss had already hooked Flekken and Boniface in the 36th minute, but chose not to make any further changes at the break – and paid the price when Flamengo grabbed a fifth less than 10 minutes into the second half.
Finally, on the hour mark, Ten Hag opted for a full overhaul – taking off every remaining starter, including the two early substitutes.
That saw a wave of senior names enter the fray, with Granit Xhaka, Alex Grimaldo and Patrick Schick among those thrown on in an attempt to salvage some pride.
It was academy prospect Montrell Culbreath who gave Leverkusen something to cheer about, netting a consolation in the 71st minute.
The German side steadied themselves in the closing stages, but the heavy early damage had already sealed their fate - leaving Ten Hag to endure a punishing debut.
The heavy defeat is Leverkusen's first in the absence of Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, who both joined Liverpool for a combined £145.5million.
The 2023-24 Bundesliga winners have added added to their squad with the arrivals of the likes of Flekken, Jarrell Quansah and Malik Tillman.

Chelsea target £60m Bundesliga star to add to Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens signings - but Enzo Maresca's side may push for exits
Chelsea are targeting a move for RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons with the Blues expecting to offload more attacking talent this summer. Simons is expected to leave the Bundesliga club after their failure to secure Champions League football for the upcoming season. The Dutch international had joined RB Leipzig last summer on a permanent basis, with the deal worth an initial £43m, with a further £26m in possible add ons. Simons had spent two seasons on loan at the club from French giants PSG, while the former Barcelona academy prospect had also spent a year at PSV. The 22-year-old is believed to be open to a move to Chelsea this summer, with the Blues having held initial talks with his representatives. Chelsea have already strengthened heavily in attacking areas during the transfer window, with strikers Joao Pedro and Liam Delap joining for £60m and £30m respectively. Winger Jamie Gittens also joined from Borussia Dortmund for £55m, while highly rated Brazilian teenager Estevao will arrive from Palmeiras for £29m. A move for Simons would likely depend on outgoings from Stamford Bridge this summer. The Blues have already sold Noni Madueke to Arsenal in a £52m deal earlier this week. Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca admitted last month that Christopher Nkunku may leave the club this summer. The Blues appear open to his departure despite signing the 27-year-old on a six-year deal for a hefty £52.7million just two years ago. Nicolas Jackson has also been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge having dropped down the pecking order. Chelsea insist they are in no rush to sell and value Jackson, who they signed two years ago for £32m, at £100m despite the search to find an upgrade. Raheem Sterling returned to the club this summer following his season-long loan at Arsenal, with Joao Felix back from a spell at AC Milan. Winger Mykhailo Mudryk was last month charged by the Football Association for breaking anti-doping rules following a failed drugs test, with the Ukrainian facing the threat of a four-year ban.

Morgan Gibbs-White misses start of Nottingham Forest pre-season camp in fresh twist to Spurs saga
Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White has not travelled with the squad for their pre-season camp in Portugal amid strong links with a move away from the club. Gibbs-White was set for a medical at Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month after Spurs were understood to have triggered his £60m release clause. However, Forest accused Spurs of an allegedly illegal approach for Gibbs-White - contacting the player directly before going to the club - and the protracted saga has failed to move on the weeks since. Forest are currently considering legal action against Spurs. The England international has now made himself notable for his absence from the travelling Forest pack, but it understood that this is not transfer related. He has instead not travelled with the rest of the squad due to a personal reason and is expected he will join up with the team later in the week. Gibbs-White had already returned to pre-season training with Forest last Monday and has trained again with the club since. He also started Forest's 0-0 friendly draw with Chesterfield on Saturday at the SMH Group Stadium and played the first half. Forest will spend the next week-and-a-half in Portugal on a training camp and will play friendlies against Premier League side Fulham and Portuguese side Estoril Praia.
