Quebec lends forest fire teams to battle Saskatchewan and Ontario blazes
QUÉBEC - Quebec's forest fire prevention agency says it is sending reinforcements to Ontario and Saskatchewan to help teams fight several forest and brush fires.
Two CL-415 firefighting aircraft and their crews will head to Dryden, Ont., while two other of the same aircraft will head to Meadow Lake, Sask.
Quebec's forest fire prevention agency, known as SOPFEU, says the teams departed Sunday from Quebec City.
The agency says the current situation in Quebec allows for resources to head to other provinces.
In Ontario, there were six active fires burning across the province shortly before noon Sunday, including one in Haliburton, located about 170 km north of Oshawa, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources' interactive map.
The Saskatchewan Ministry of Public Safety map showed there were 18 active wildfires burning Sunday, for a total of 142 fires since the season began on April 1.
Since the season began, the Quebec agency has responded to 59 fires in the province which have ravaged 38.7 hectares of forest. On Saturday, the agency asked people living in the western part of the province to be aware that the fire index level is high to very high in the region.

Quebec lifts open fire ban, reports no active blazes in key zone
QUÉBEC - Quebec's Public Security Department says it has lifted its open fire ban in or near forests and says there no active fires in the intensive protection zone. Authorities say the decision to lift the ban was taken in conjunction with the province's forest fire protection agency, known as SOPFEU. Since the beginning of the forest fire season, the province has reported 104 blazes affecting more than a square kilometre of forest in the zone where fire protection resources are deployed systematically. By comparison, the 10-year average on the same date is 195 fires and about 2.5 square kilometres burned. Fire danger indicators had reached extreme levels in several parts of the province, but periods of rain in the forecast should bring those indicators down. The province says the ban was lifted as of Friday evening. The conditions in Quebec have allowed the province to deploy two CL-415 firefighting aircraft and their crews to Saskatchewan and two others to Ontario. The fire protection agency says it has also sent a Navajo PA31 twin-engined aircraft equipped with a VeriMap infrared detection system to help with the Ontario blazes. Forest fires - Ban on open fires in or near forests
QUEBEC CITY, May 27, 2025 /CNW/ - The Ministère de la Sécurité publique (MSP) will prohibit open fires in or near certain forests as of May 28 at 8:00 a.m. due to current conditions. This decision has been made in collaboration with SOPFEU. Here is a map showing the location of the entire territory in question: The ban on open fires applies in the following territories: NORD-DU-QUÉBEC : Jamésie (991), Eeyou Istchee (Waswanipi, Mistissini, Oujé-Bougoumou, Chisasibi, Eastmain, Nemiscau, Waskaganish, Wemindji) (993). CÔTE-NORD : La Haute-Côte-Nord (95), Manicouagan (96), Sept-Rivières (971), Caniapiscau (972), Minganie (981), Le Golfe-du-Saint-Laurent (982). SAGUENAY–LAC-SAINT-JEAN : Le Domaine-du-Roy (91), Maria-Chapdelaine (92), Lac-Saint-Jean-Est (93), Saguenay (941), Le Fjord-du-Saguenay (942). ABITIBI-TÉMISCAMINGUE : Rouyn-Noranda (86), Abitibi-Ouest (87), Abitibi (88), La Vallée-de-l'Or (89). MAURICIE : La Tuque (90) for its portion located north of latitude 48°.
