Richard Gere on Actors Planning Sex Scenes Without Intimacy Coordinators: ‘In the '80s We Were Comfortable That Way'
In the past 10 years or so, intimacy coordinators have become a go-to role in film sets where love scenes are being filmed. The urgency of having them on set greatly increased in the wake of the #MeToo movement that rocked Hollywood in late 2017. But some who've been working in the industry for quite some time have been skeptical of their utility. Sean Bean, for one, said that he thought intimacy coordinators ruined the 'spontaneity' and 'chemistry' between actors.
Now Richard Gere has joined their ranks. In an interview with The Wrap about the Paramount+ spy series 'The Agency,' Gere spoke alongside his fellow actors on the show Michael Fassbender, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Jeffrey Wright. Fassbender and Turner-Smith play lovers, and both actors strongly endorsed the role of their intimacy coordinator on set.

Fassbender said, 'A lot of the time, directors won't say what they want you to do and you're left to your own devices. But it's kind of like doing a fight sequence now. It's like, 'OK, are you comfortable with me touching your breast or ass?' Or whatever it is. The guidelines are down and then you can shoot super fast.' To that, Turner-Smith added that intimacy coordinators 'should just be there for [actors], like a stunt coordinator. You would not do an unrehearsed stunt.'
The Wrap's interviewer Steve Pond then noted to Gere how different this approach is from when the actor was in a number of steamy movies such as 'An Officer and a Gentleman' and 'American Gigolo.'
'I don't think it would have worked then, to tell you the truth,' Gere said, noting that he's never had Fassbender's experience with directors who give no more direction for sex scenes than 'Off you go, guys.' Fassbender also said that he had never felt comfortable discussing the choreography of sex scenes with his scene partner beforehand, and that having the intermediary of the intimacy coordinator helps.
'See, in the '80s we were comfortable that way,' Gere then said, about discussing the mechanics of a sex scene with the actor you're having the scene with.
It's an intriguing moment in the interview, and it speaks greatly to how things have changed on set in the past decade. That said, there are still some rising actors who have elected to go without intimacy coordinators. Mikey Madison caused a stir by refusing a intimacy coordinator for her many sex scenes in 'Anora.'
'I was always comfortable, and I also think because Ani was too,' Madison said last fall to The New York Times. 'To me it was never a thought in my head to be nervous or anything.'
Her director, Sean Baker, said that he feels intimacy coordinators should be there on a case-by-case basis. Famously, for 'Anora,' he and his wife Samantha Quan acted out the intimate scenes in question for Madison and her scene partners in the best picture winning film before the cameras started rolling.
For Gere's part, he has an echo in Michael Douglas, who has said he thinks intimacy coordinators on set are another way to 'take control away from filmmakers.' Meanwhile, Kim Basinger said, 'I can't imagine having somebody come up to me and say, 'Do you mind if they put their hand here?'' And director Mia Hansen-Love suggested intimacy coordinators are 'virtue police.' On the other hand, Michelle Williams found the experience of working with one to be 'extremely worthwhile.'

On today's Beyond The Gates recap: Fairmont Country Club: Martin and Vernon are enjoying a meal. They talk a bit about The Articulettes before Vernon brings up that dreadful night. Martin says the past is right in front of them and isn't going anywhere. With that, the duo shoots glances at the nosy waiter. Martin is thrilled his grandfather believes him as he thought he was losing his mind. Vernon says they must do something to calm his nerves. He thinks he should make the suggestion to get the young waiter moved to a different post. They also need to find out what game the young man is playing. Martin tells his grandfather more about what happened with the young waiter the day before. Vernon thinks something more underhanded is happening. Just then, the young waiter approaches and Martin has another flashback. The young waiter says Martin looks like he saw a ghost. Vernon wonders whether they've met before. He says it's hard to tell with so many of their people looking alike – Duprees, he means. Vernon responds knowing EXACTLY what the young waiter meant. With that, Vernon dismisses him and tells Martin he knows the young man is connected to the incident. Martin agrees as he knows he was there that night. Vernon wonders why he would be here and now. Jacob says he'll make some calls but thinks June shouldn't get her hopes up. Bill and Hayley's Place: Bill is going on about nonsense when Hayley confronts him about his health. She wants to know the truth so they can fight together. Bill is confused and Hayley says the insurance company called and she wants him to spill. He says he is just making sure she is protected in case anything ever happens. Hayley says she only cares about him, and he promises he's not going anywhere. Just then, Bill gets notice of Chelsea's arrival. Chelsea says she is looking for some free legal advice and shows Bill the copyright suit along with a cease-and-desist order. She promises the purse was her idea and she doesn't even know who these folks are. Chelsea wonders if they are actually capable of shutting their business down. Things get heated with the trio and Chelsea gets snarky with both Bill and Hayley. As Hayley is exiting the room, Chelsea stops her and thanks her for getting her father to the hospital and sticking by his side. She doesn't mean to offend her in her own home. She turns to Bill and says despite his heinous actions, she loves him. Bill knows he hasn't always been a good father but would love to use this opportunity to work together and get closer. Bill and Chelsea sit down, and he says the suit is simply a first effort at intimidation. Chelsea thanks her father. After some pushing, she admits she came to him because he isn't afraid to get his hands dirty. Police Station: Marcel asks Elon about Smitty's puff piece. Elon says it's mandatory as the department needs good press. Marcel indicates Smitty is asking all kinds of questions which could cause problems for him and his retirement. Elon wonders if he's been tipped off which leads Marcel to wonder if Martin is responsible. Chelsea and Kat's Digs: Tomas arrives to give Kat legal advice about Leslie's case. She asks if it's possible to hire a private DNA lab to test the sample as the city's folks are backlogged for months. Tomas says it would take the sample out of the chain of custody. Tomas and Kat get all hot and heavy when she shuts down the scene. Kat apologizes but Tomas says she's helping him be a good role model to his little brother, Ramon (when will we meet Ramon and when will he hook up with Samantha?). He says good things are worth waiting for (will he sleep with Eva before Kat?). Tomas asks if there is something she's waiting for to take that next step with him. Kat says she has seen people in her family take chances with love and be devastated. She doesn't want to be anyone's after thought. Tomas assures she won't ever be his afterthought. With that, he says he needs to go back to work. Kat embraces him but Tomas doesn't seem happy. Orphey Gene's: Naomi asks June to please let her secure safter housing. June ignores her words and asks about her things. Naomi says there's no information yet, but Jacob is on the case. June indicates she's not used to folks looking out for her. They talk about the picture and June says there's something about those kids' faces that is special. She thinks if you have a child, it makes the world better. She can imagine anything as she lives her life through that photograph. Naomi promises they will do everything they can to reunite her with her photograph. Jacob arrives with a box of June's things. She looks through everything and thanks Jacob for all his help. She rummages through the box but doesn't see the picture. June freaks out as she throws everything out of the box. At the bottom, she finds the picture and breaks down in tears. She promises her children she will never leave them again. Previous Beyond The Gates Recap: Endings Bill says Chelsea doesn't need to do anything and promises to handle everything. Elon tells Marcel he convinced PR to take the precinct off the publicity tour. There will be no more interviews for the foreseeable future. Marcel says that doesn't solve their problems as Smitty's investigation is going to lead him back to his own house. Marcel tells Elon someone needs to get the message through to him right quick. Elon promises to drive the point home. Smitty calls someone saying he needs to talk to them right now. Vernon speaks to someone (presumably Elon) that the situation needs to be shut down. 5 Things Parents Do at Restaurants That Most Annoy Servers
A restaurant server is sharing the worst ways parents misbehave at restaurants. 'The phrase, 'The customer is always right' is dying out,' Alana Fineman, a comedian and server in Southern California who posts restaurant skits on TikTok, tells Dining out with young kids is draining, between picky eaters, spilled food, whining and restless wanderers. Fortunately, kid-friendly restaurants are equipped with coloring activities, playful decorations and the swift delivery of kids' meals to quell complaints. Sometimes, it's parents — not their children — who misbehave. 'Servers don't want to shame families or discourage them from going out to eat,' says Fineman. 'Parents are usually ... trying their best.' Here are five mistakes families most often make at restaurants, according to this server. Kids make messes and that's part of the experience, according to Fineman. 'It's one thing when a baby throws food from his high chair — it's another when kids rip open sugar packets and dump them on the floor or finger-paint with ketchup on the walls,' says Fineman. 'That usually means that a parent is not paying attention or allowing it to happen,' she adds. Big messes are typically cleaned by bussers, whom Fineman calls one of the 'hardest-working' employees in her field. 'If someone vomits, it's the busser who cleans it up,' she explains. 'Kids shouldn't run through a restaurant — it's not a McDonald's PlayPlace,' says Fineman. Most restaurants lack appropriate spaces for children to cut loose, says Fineman. A high-speed collision with a server can cause broken glass, fallen food, delayed orders and injuries. 'If you're carrying a tray of five martinis or plates of boiling-hot food and a child runs in front of you, you can drop it on the floor or onto a person,' she says. Fineman recalls a hazardous incident at her restaurant. 'Kids in a party of 10 were running around,' she says. 'They climbed over a fence and onto the street, where they threw rocks onto the dining patio.' While no one was struck, the children were lectured by an employee, who Fineman says, 'Did the parenting.' 'Kids get to a certain age when they can order their own food and the parents will say, 'Tell the lady what you want,'' says Fineman. She finds most of this banter 'funny and endearing,' but if the child won't speak up, the server now has a parenting problem. Fineman says gentle prompts from a parent is usually encouraging enough, however, 'Every so often, a parent says, 'We're not moving on until you learn to order.'' 'I can't always be a part of it when I'm really busy,' says Fineman. Picky eaters are usually not a problem for servers — unless parents have big expectations. Fineman says some parents get 'irate' with restricted menus or if chefs cannot produce a specific meal, due to limited ingredients. 'If it's a slow day, they might be able to ... but not every time,' says Fineman. 'There needs to be a contingency plan for what your child can eat.' Fineman proposes that parents plan for kids with dietary preferences by reading the digital menu before coming in. Fineman points to a 'fascinating phenomenon' wherein parents don't necessarily mention when children are included in a reservation. Maybe they hope to sidestep the automatic gratuities that some restaurants apply to larger parties, says Fineman, but most don't realize that children count as guests, even when they require high chairs, which take the same space as a chair. The miscommunication is more of a problem on busier days, when families may have to wait longer for a sizable table. 'There can be an unfortunate domino effect in the restaurant industry,' says Fineman, adding, 'Miscalculating three people can affect the next 45 minutes.'
