KUNG FURY Director Teases 'Fantasy Punk' Madness with New Movie DRAGONLORD, a Mix of HE-MAN, STAR WARS, and LORD OF THE RINGS — GeekTyrant
David Sandberg, the mad genius behind the wild action film Kung Fury , is back with something wild, weird, and completely his own. While fans are still waiting for the long-delayed Kung Fury 2 starring Michael Fassbender and Arnold Schwarzenegger (which remains stuck in legal limbo), the Swedish filmmaker is prepping his next project. His next project is a 'fantasy punk' film titled Dragonlord , and it sounds like a genre blender cranked to eleven. Sandberg told Variety, 'It's a really fun, really rich world with a lot of funny characters. It's tonally similar to Kung Fury.' He went on to describe the film as 'a crazy mishmash of stuff,' adding, 'There's no movie that I can think of that's exactly like it. But yeah, it's like He-Man mixed with Star Wars and Lord of the Rings and Mad Max and also Ninja Turtles … but it's definitely gonna feel super different, I think, from anything.' Well, that sounds insane! If that laundry list of inspirations doesn't raise an eyebrow, just wait until you hear what the movie's actually about. In Dragonlord , Sandberg will star as the title character, "a treasure-obsessed hunter whose best friend is a Tyrannosaurus Rex called Blaze Falcon. Rather than hunt for yet more treasure, however, Blaze just wants to hang out and play video games, but when he's kidnapped by the evil Dreadmancer, Dragonlord must pull together an Avengers-like team of bonkers heroes to save his dino buddy." This new project is clearly another trip into Sandberg's nostalgic, synth-drenched brain, a place where '80s action tropes crash into Saturday morning cartoons, all tied together with lo-fi VFX and tongue-in-cheek storytelling. It completely makes sense from the guy who brought us Kung Fury, which launched his career and took the internet by storm with its over-the-top blend of time travel, kung fu, and Nazis. Kung Fury 2 , the feature-length sequel starring Fassbender and Schwarzenegger, has been completed since 2019 but has yet to be released due to legal complications with investors. It's unclear when, or if, the film will see the light of day, but Sandberg seems ready to shift focus and energy into this new chaotic fantasyverse. Dragonlord doesn't have a release date yet, but when it is released, we can expect something colorful, unhinged, and unlike anything else in theaters. Or streaming services. Or your dreams.

Rumours of more filming in Woodley circulate
Rumours of future filming across the Woodley area have been circulating as an increasing film presence has been seen across Berkshire this month. TV crews were spotted in multiple locations for the filming of the second season of the American TV drama 'The Agency'. The TV show, produced by local celeb George Clooney, stars multiple award-winning actors including Michael Fassbender and Richard Gere. The Reading Chronicle visited the film set, where several Woodley residents offered up their homes for scenes in the new season of the TV show. According to a crew member, the location scouts have chosen the Reading/Woodley area due to its proximity to Shinfield Studios. Although unable to confirm which location, it was stated that further filming will take place in the area in the near future. Berkshire has become a popular destination for the filming of Hollywood blockbusters and TV shows over the past 20 years. The locations provide more discretion than if a scene was filmed in the middle of a London neighbourhood. At the beginning of May, TV crews were also spotted in The Oracle Shopping Centre in Reading where they choose the space to film an airport scene. The town centre shopping centre made a perfect alternative to a busy departure lounge where security would be the major issue.

Could Nicaragua Be the Next 'It' Destination?
'The dried fruit alone…' My friend Kim's eyes fluttered closed as she recalled her recent visit to a tiny resort on a private island in Nicaragua. 'It tastes like candy.' Kim, a fashion editor whose spot-on taste dictates a good half of my clothing purchases, library holds, and video streams, now had the fix to my family's post-White Lotus spring break problem. We wanted to go to Costa Rica, following in the footsteps of seemingly everybody else we know—but given the Costa craze, the shortest flight we could find involved a nine-hour layover in Winnipeg. A trip to Nicaragua, Costa Rica's northern neighbor, was a little more realistic. Once a magnet for intrepid backpackers and surfers who were willing to overlook the nation's political turbulence and the State Department's alarming travel advisory, Nicaragua is shaping up to be the next 'it' destination for those seeking sun and sand. The Nicaraguan travel scene started to take flight right before the pandemic. After a few shaky years, it has caught up to where it left off—and then some. The menus are getting more intricate and delicious. The luxury experiences are getting more luxurious. Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander recently retreated to what Salman Rushdie called a 'beautiful, volcanic country' in his account of a three-week visit. So did Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Margot Robbie went there for a yoga and surfing retreat (and encountered a human foot on the beach, but that's another story). Like electrolytes or Nutrafol, Nicaragua is one of those words that you can't stop hearing about once it lodges in your mind. 'It was a slow recovery, but we're back in the game,' Howard Caulson, the general manager of Jicaro Island Lodge, a thoroughly idyllic getaway, told me. 'Having a time out gave us a chance to up the ante. Beforehand, what we were providing was really good. Now it's even better.'

Here's Why You Can't See Arnold Schwarzenegger Riding a Giant Dinosaur
Arnold Schwarzenegger, on top of a giant dinosaur, massive gun in hand, shooting Nazis. It was footage that launched a thousand blog posts across the internet. Leaked footage, in fact, from a movie called Kung Fury 2 which, despite being filmed in 2019 and also featuring Michael Fassbender as a cocky, over-the-top supercop, has never been released. But that's not because audiences aren't ready for all that Arnold awesomeness. It's because of money. Isn't it always? In a new interview with Variety, Kung Fury 2 star, writer, and director David Sandberg details multiple lawsuits that continue to plague the film, now over five years later. Those center mainly on Creasun Entertainment USA, the U.S. branch of a Chinese film company called Creasun Media. In 2019, Creasun signed on to help finance two-thirds of Kung Fury 2, including about $10 million in visual effects work from the company Double Negative. Production went fine, but then something changed. 'Once we started getting to VFX, things started to really slow down, and things became a bit weird,' Sandberg said. 'And then it turned out that our Chinese financier had basically stopped all payments.' A lawsuit was filed and, after about a year and a half, a settlement was reached in which Creasun was going to pay what it owed. But, apparently, that still didn't happen. So Creasun was sued again, but it didn't stop there. Creasun filed countersuits accusing producers of stealing money from the production. Sandberg says that isn't true, and Variety reports some of the other producers on the film tried to buy Creasun out. It declined. 'They just kind of stonewalled every single attempt to solve the issue,' he said. 'And it was just really heartbreaking for me as an artist who's worked on this for years. And there are so many people who have poured their hearts into this, and I feel super terrible for them.' And so the slow legal process continues, ensuring that despite principal photography being complete, as well as an edit of the movie, between $5 and $10 million of visual effects remain unfinished. In fact, the footage that leaked earlier this month had temporary effects, which were never supposed to be seen by the public. 'It's a fantastic movie and I'm so bummed that I can't show it,' Sandberg said. 'But I haven't given up on it. One day, for sure, it will get released. But we just have to power through it. But it's incredible. Fassbender is incredible. Arnold is incredible. We had such a wonderful experience on set and everyone felt the love behind it. So it's just a shame that it would end up this way. But it's not over. It will get out there eventually.' Read more from Sandberg, including some teases of the movie he's been making as the Kung Fury 2 legal battle continues to play out, over at Variety.

3 underrated Netflix movies you should watch this weekend (May 16–18)
Feel like you've already watched everything worth seeing on Netflix? Think again! Behind all the flashy blockbusters and trending originals lies a stash of underrated films that didn't get the spotlight but absolutely deserve it. These hidden gems are perfect for viewers in the mood for something different and who don't exactly want to endlessly scroll through countless choices on the streaming giant. Whether it's an offbeat comedy, an indie sci-fi flick, or a gripping international thriller, there's a unique offering for every type of audience. So this weekend, skip the usual suspects and go off-script. For those willing to venture beyond the algorithm's usual suggestions, these underappreciated movies might just be what your weekend watchlist is missing. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+. Frank (2014) Aspiring songwriter Jon Burroughs' (Domhnall Gleeson) life and career take a sharp turn when he stumbles upon a man trying to drown himself one day in Frank. This leads to a series of events that sees him join an avant-garde band named The Soronprfbs, led by the bizarre Frank (Michael Fassbender), who perpetually wears a large papier-mâché head. The band soon goes to a remote cabin in Ireland to record an album, during which Jon secretly posts their sessions online, which earns them unexpected attention. This newfound fame leads to fractures within the group, as Frank's mental health worsens and Jon struggles to keep them all together. Directed by Lenny Abrahamson, Frank is a film that defies straightforward categorization. It's an offbeat comedy, a poignant drama, and an impressive musical movie that explores the overlap between mental health and creativity. Its specific kind of humor has understandably found just a very niche audience, which means Frank isn't often included in discussions of the best 2010s movies. For those looking for a weirdly funny and oddly moving character-driven film, though, the 2014 movie is worth a shot. Frank is streaming on Netflix. Freaks (2018) Seven-year-old Chloe Lewis (Lexy Kolker) has never stepped outside her home, as she's kept locked inside by her father, Henry (Emile Hirsch), who warns her of the dangers beyond their walls. She has always believed his warnings about how 'bad men' are waiting to harm 'abnormals' like them. When a stranger enters her life and offers her a different perspective, however, she steps out of the only home she has known for the first time and discovers the startling truth. She soon realizes she isn't alone and that someone out there needs her. Freaks is a criminally underrated sci-fi thriller directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who created it with a minuscule $2,000 budget. It cleverly uses Chloe's limited perspective to keep audiences in the dark about what exactly is going on outside her house. Despite a stellar performance from Kolker and overall positive reception, Freaks remains a hidden gem in the sci-fi genre that can be a pleasant surprise for fans of similar stories. Freaks is streaming on Netflix. God's Crooked Lines (2022) In the twisty Spanish psychological thriller, God's Crooked Lines, renowned private investigator Alice Gould (Bárbara Lennie) voluntarily checks into a psychiatric hospital under the guise of paranoia to learn more about the suspicious death of a fellow patient. Armed with a letter from Dr. Donadío (Lluís Soler) and the consent of her husband, Alice believes she has everything set for a secret operation to uncover the truth. As she spends more time in the facility and meets more eccentric patients, however, she begins to lose sight of her original path. Alice's grip on her mission and sanity soon becomes increasingly tenuous, leading to an unforgettable climax. Directed by Oriol Paul, God's Crooked Lines is the ideal choice for viewers who love movies with shocking plot twists that make you question everything you've just seen. The film is taut with suspense, and its use of dual timelines and several clues keeps audiences in a constant state of uncertainty. Fans of classics like Shutter Island and The Others will undoubtedly enjoy this overlooked international film that's just a few clicks away on Netflix. God's Crooked Lines is streaming on Netflix.
