KUNG FURY Director Teases 'Fantasy Punk' Madness with New Movie DRAGONLORD, a Mix of HE-MAN, STAR WARS, and LORD OF THE RINGS — GeekTyrant

David Sandberg, the mad genius behind the wild action film Kung Fury , is back with something wild, weird, and completely his own. While fans are still waiting for the long-delayed Kung Fury 2 starring Michael Fassbender and Arnold Schwarzenegger (which remains stuck in legal limbo), the Swedish filmmaker is prepping his next project.
His next project is a 'fantasy punk' film titled Dragonlord , and it sounds like a genre blender cranked to eleven. Sandberg told Variety, 'It's a really fun, really rich world with a lot of funny characters. It's tonally similar to Kung Fury.'
He went on to describe the film as 'a crazy mishmash of stuff,' adding, 'There's no movie that I can think of that's exactly like it. But yeah, it's like He-Man mixed with Star Wars and Lord of the Rings and Mad Max and also Ninja Turtles … but it's definitely gonna feel super different, I think, from anything.'
Well, that sounds insane! If that laundry list of inspirations doesn't raise an eyebrow, just wait until you hear what the movie's actually about.
In Dragonlord , Sandberg will star as the title character, "a treasure-obsessed hunter whose best friend is a Tyrannosaurus Rex called Blaze Falcon. Rather than hunt for yet more treasure, however, Blaze just wants to hang out and play video games, but when he's kidnapped by the evil Dreadmancer, Dragonlord must pull together an Avengers-like team of bonkers heroes to save his dino buddy."
This new project is clearly another trip into Sandberg's nostalgic, synth-drenched brain, a place where '80s action tropes crash into Saturday morning cartoons, all tied together with lo-fi VFX and tongue-in-cheek storytelling.
It completely makes sense from the guy who brought us Kung Fury, which launched his career and took the internet by storm with its over-the-top blend of time travel, kung fu, and Nazis.
Kung Fury 2 , the feature-length sequel starring Fassbender and Schwarzenegger, has been completed since 2019 but has yet to be released due to legal complications with investors. It's unclear when, or if, the film will see the light of day, but Sandberg seems ready to shift focus and energy into this new chaotic fantasyverse.
Dragonlord doesn't have a release date yet, but when it is released, we can expect something colorful, unhinged, and unlike anything else in theaters. Or streaming services. Or your dreams.

Sweden's Kiruna Church Is On The Move After More Than 100 Years

Kiruna church, weighing 672,4 tons, will be transported to a new location almost two miles away to avoid damages caused by LKAB´s iron ore mine. Getty Images In a spectacle unfolding over two days this week, the landmark Kiruna Church is being transported on a hydraulic transporter along a specially prepared three-mile route. The move of the 130-foot-wide, 115-foot-tall structure represents the most striking chapter yet in a decades-long relocation project that has already shifted hundreds of homes, businesses, and public buildings out of harm's way. Kiruna's move is driven by ground subsidence linked to the vast iron ore deposits beneath the city. When the settlement was founded in 1890, the surrounding mountains offered vital shelter from Arctic winds, making it an ideal location. More than a century later, the growth of what is now the world's largest underground iron ore mine has forced a dramatic rethink. To reach the richest seams, operator LKAB must tunnel beneath the original town site in an outcome the city's founders could never have imagined. The church was completed in 1912 and is widely considered one of Sweden's most beautiful pre-1950 buildings. The organ in Kiruna Church, one of largest wooden buildings in Sweden. LightRocket via Getty Images Designed by architect Gustaf Wickman, it blends Scandinavian Romantic style with influences from Sami culture and Norwegian stave churches. Something that's lacking is many overtly Christian symbols. While a compromise was reached to include a cross, Lundbohm wanted everyone to feel welcome in the church. Its striking red-painted wooden walls and ornate interior have made it the pride of Kiruna for generations, as well as a significant tourist attraction. How To Move A Church Unlike some other heritage buildings in the city, which were dismantled and rebuilt piece by piece, the church is being relocated intact. Engineers from the contractor Veidekke, working with specialists in heavy transport, have jacked the 600-ton structure onto a self-propelled modular transporter. Roads have been widened, viaducts demolished, and infrastructure re-routed to allow the slow journey to its new home beside the cemetery and the emerging city center. Veidekke's CEO Jimmy Bengtsson said the company has already been involved with the dismantling of the old city center and the construction of the new one. 'We have moved 12 important cultural buildings,' he added. A Cultural Event For Kiruna The relocation is not only an engineering feat but also a cultural event. Following a blessing from church leaders of the church and planned route, the move got underaway at approximately 8am local time on August 19. The incredible relocation project is being live streamed to fascinated audiences across Sweden and beyond. Getty Images Thousands of locals and visitors gathered to watch the church inch along the road, while concerts and community activities accompanied the move. LKAB, the state-owned mining company financing the project, has organized a livestream for global audiences, ensuring that the extraordinary sight of a church on wheels can be shared far beyond the Arctic Circle. Swedish media including the newspaper Aftonbladet are also live streaming the remarkable event. Yet for residents, the moment is bittersweet. Kiruna's vicar has described the move as 'a rebirth,' while others reflect on the loss of familiar landscapes swallowed by mining. Sami communities, whose reindeer herding routes have been affected by both the mine and the city's expansion, have voiced concern over the wider impact of development in the region. Once resettled on its new site, the church will be carefully restored and rotated so its entrance faces the community, which is a traditional orientation for folk churches in Arctic Sweden. The grave of Hjalmar Lundbohm, Kiruna's founding figure, will also be relocated to rest beside the church once more. Visitors who come for the northern lights, one of the region's most famous ice hotels or to explore the Arctic wilderness now have the chance to witness history in motion: an entire city redefining itself and its most cherished building taking a slow, stately journey into the future. Ryan Reynolds And Rob McElhenney May Bring Women's World Cup To Wrexham

Ambitious plans to redevelop the oldest venue in the world to stage international soccer could result in Wrexham hosting matches at the 2035 FIFA Women's World Cup. The Welsh club are owned by American actor Rob McElhenney and Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, through their RR McReynolds Company LLC. Since their takeover was approved in 2021, they have helped the team secure three successive promotions from tier five to tier two of the English men's game. The club's fortunes have been documented on the hugely successful FX television series 'Welcome to Wrexham' broadcast on Disney Plus. The Hollywood actors were present on Saturday to see their team play its first game of the new Championship season against West Bromwich Albion, a match watched by an attendance of 10,656 spectators. It was the club's first game at that level for 43 years. The United Kingdom are the sole bidders to host the 2035 FIFA Women's World Cup. It will be the second tournament to feature 48 teams and will therefore utilise more venues than previous editions. The Football Associations of the four nations staging games - England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales - will submit their bid document to FIFA in November which is expected to include up to sixteen stadiums. It is believed that the Football Association of Wales (FAW) want to put forward two stadiums, one in Cardiff, in the south of the country, and one in the north of the nation. The Racecourse Ground (Y Cae Ras in Welsh) is the largest ground in North Wales and has a storied history having first staged games in 1864. Currently, FIFA bid requirements stipulate that a minimum of eight stadiums must be proposed and each stadium must be an all-seater with a minimum capacity of 20,000. This is double the current limit of the Racecourse Ground. A new 7,750-capacity Kop Stand is currently being developed which will take the seating capacity to 18,000. It will be fully compliant with UEFA Category Four stadium requirements. The new Kop will be completed in time for it to be used next summer when the stadium will host matches at the U19 UEFA European Championship. However in May 2024, Reynolds and McElhenney outlined plans to redevelop all four sides of the ground. McElhenney said 'it's hard to say for sure, but we think we can get between 45,000 and 55,000 people in there'. Stadium architects Populous have been appointed to create a masterplan for the venue. Speaking to the Press Association yesterday, Noel Mooney, the chief executive of the Football Association of Wales (FAW) admitted that 'the Kop development is a significant first step and the vision for the stadium is incredible.' 'What Ryan and Rob are doing is amazing. They are looking to look to invest in the stadium and build up the Cae Ras, which is the oldest international ground in the world, and there is a potential North Star for them. The city and the club have a chance to bring a World Cup to North Wales. What a story that would be. What a legacy for Ryan and Rob to leave Wrexham.' The Racecourse Ground first hosted an international games in 1877 when Wales played Scotland on March 5. Since then it has staged 95 senior international Wales matches, more than any other stadium in the country. The last of those came against Gibraltar in October 2023. The Wrexham Women's team were promoted to the Welsh Premier Division in 2023 and finished fourth in the league last season. The investment and interest created by Reynolds and McElhenney have led to a partnership between the women's team and Ally Financial, the largest all-digital bank in the United States. As part of the deal, they organised for the team to compete in tour matches in the United States in 2024 and, this summer, in Hong Kong. Last month, the Welsh women's team competed at their first-ever senior tournament, the UEFA Women's Euro in Switzerland. The Welsh women's team played Sweden at the Racecourse Ground in the UEFA Nations League in February. As hosts of the Women's World Cup, Wales will qualify automatically for a tournament they have never competed at before. Mooney added that 'there is a symbiotic relationship there where we can create a lot of value for each other. People all over the world are talking about Wrexham and that inspires partners like FIFA, commercial bodies and Governments to get involved.'

How do you move a beloved Swedish church down the road? With prayer, engineering and some Eurovision

KIRUNA, Sweden — How do you move one of Sweden's most beloved wooden churches down the road? With a little bit of engineering, a lot of prayer — and some Eurovision for good luck. The Kiruna Church — called Kiruna Kyrka in Swedish — and its belfry are being moved this week along a 5-kilometer (3-mile) route east to a new city center as part of the town's relocation. It's happening because the world's largest underground iron-ore mine is threatening to swallow the town.
