MLB's surprising top team so far, plus the NBA playoffs begin

Good morning! Have some candy today.
A month ago, the Padres figured to be a fringe playoff contender that could get hot and challenge an elite team or two in October — like they did last year, when they took the eventual champion Dodgers to a decisive fifth game in the NLDS. On Opening Day, FanGraphs gave San Diego about a one-in-three shot at making a third postseason in four years.
Not a bad forecast, but the Padres didn't exactly feel like an organization on the rise. A lot of things weighed down on any optimism:
No matter. A little over 10 percent of the way into the season, the Padres are 15-6, the best record in baseball. The team's offensive core (Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Merrill when healthy) is raking. Michael King, part of the return from the Yankees for Soto before last season, has pitched lights-out, as has new arrival Pivetta. Robert Suarez has been a dominant closer. Everything is clicking.

The club is packing Petco Park to the tune of more than 40,000 fans per game. Merrill just signed a nine-year extension to solidify himself as a true franchise cornerstone. The vibes could hardly be better, no matter what is going on with the dollars and cents.
Elsewhere, April ball is full of surprises. The Braves started 0-7 and have had a slow dig out of that hole. The Twins have been a disaster and ceded AL Central favorite status to the Tigers. The big league home run leader is … Athletics first baseman Tyler Soderstrom? Indeed, with nine homers.
We asked The Athletic's Eno Sarris and Derek VanRiper, hosts of 'Rates & Barrels,' which April developments are primed to regress to their respective means.
Sarris has the Giants offense going 📉:
💬 Who did you think would have a good offense to start the year? The Cubs? Yep, they led MLB in runs per game entering play on Saturday. The Diamondbacks and Yankees? Yep, second and third. But also right there are the Giants, in fourth somehow scoring more than five runs a game. They might be OK, but that seems out of whack.
Meanwhile, VanRiper has the Braves offense, sixth from the bottom in runs per game, going 📈:
💬 Ronald Acuña Jr. is in the late stages of rehab from his second ACL tear, and better health outcomes for Austin Riley, Michael Harris and Ozzie Albies should be pushing this offense back toward its 2023 form. It's a matter of time before they are a feared lineup again.
The baseball season is young. Time to check news.
NBA playoffs bring drama, dominance
Yesterday's quadruple header of Game 1s delivered a good old-fashioned beatdown, plenty of late-game dramatics and a team that couldn't miss. A quick recap:
Quite the start. Get caught up with our NBA staff's full takeaways from every game. More playoffs:
Stanley Cup favorites win Game 1s
The Jets needed a Kyle Connor game-winning goal with 1:36 left in the third period to escape with a win over the Blues. Our NHL staff has more takeaways from a back-and-forth Game 1 in Winnipeg. In the late game, the current title favorite Avalanche (+600, per BetMGM) handed the Stars their eighth straight (!) Game 1 loss. Their opening goal? Whatever this wizardry is:

More news:
The New York Rangers fired coach Peter Laviolette just one year after they won the Presidents' Trophy. GM Chris Drury spoke with the media shortly after. Elsewhere, the Anaheim Ducks dismissed coach Greg Cronin after two seasons behind the bench. A surprise to some.
Oklahoma women's gymnastics won its seventh NCAA title in the last 11 years. Dynasty.

The season is shaping up like a McLaren runaway, with the biggest drama being which driver in the orange car, Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri, wins the drivers' championship. The midfield has subplots, though, like Williams rising despite new signee and ex-Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz struggling.
📺 NBA: Magic at Celtics, Game 1
3:30 p.m. ET on ABC
The defending champs are second, behind the Thunder, in The Athletic's pre-playoff power ranking. Boston is the East's No. 2 seed, and Orlando the No. 7? Any shot at the 41-41 Magic pulling a series upset? Not really. We don't lie to you in The Pulse. But Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner are fun to watch and good for 50 points per game between them.

📺 NHL: Senators at Maple Leafs, Game 1
7 p.m. ET on ESPN2
The Battle of Ontario hits the playoffs, just like in the pre-2005 lockout days. The Leafs look to avoid an early-round exit for the ninth year in a row. The Sens are an intriguing wild-card team, playing in the playoffs for the first time since 2017. Hostilities will flair.

Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw Gets Last Laugh After Cardinals Video Board Troll
Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw Gets Last Laugh After Cardinals Video Board Troll originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Minutes before the St. Louis Cardinals were set to take on Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday afternoon, a video was played on the Busch Stadium video board looking back at a historic moment in Cardinals postseason history. Advertisement It was a highlight of Matt Adams' three-run home run off Kershaw in the seventh inning of Game 4 of the 2014 NLDS. Adams' heroic blast not only propelled the Cardinals into the NLCS against the San Francisco Giants, but it came off the eventual 2014 NL MVP Kershaw, who had finished the regular season 21-3 with a 1.77 ERA and 239 strikeouts. The timing of Sunday's video troll, however, didn't sit well with some Cardinals fans. "Probably not a great idea to piss off a hall of famer," one user suggested on 'X.' "Sadly that seems to have made Kershaw just lock in" another wrote. "And then got it shoved up their asses by a 38-year-old soft, tossing left-hander who struck out almost half the outs that he got," another fan lamented. Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw (22) pitches against the St. Louis CardinalsJeff Curry-Imagn Images Kershaw, who is 37-years-old, was flat out dominant Sunday, allowing just one run in five innings of work in the Dodgers 7-3 win. It was his first victory since August 18, 2024, which was also at Busch Stadium. Advertisement He threw 82 pitches, gave up six hits, and struck out seven batters, bringing his total to 2,983, just 17 shy of 3,000 for his career. Only 19 pitchers in Major League Baseball have accomplished that feat. With the loss, the Cardinals fell to 36-29 (22-11 at home) on the season and are four games back of the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central and one game out of a wild card spot. St. Louis will next host the Toronto Blue Jays for a three-game set beginning Monday. Aaron Judge delivers powerful statement with home run against Red Sox rookie who refuses to sign with Yankees
Aaron Judge heard what Boston Red Sox rookie Hunter Dobbins had to say about his New York Yankees. Instead of talking back, he let his bat do the talking on Sunday night. Before his Sunday start, Dobbins told the Boston Herald that he would rather retire than sign with the Yankees. Judge said before the game that he was "a little surprised" Dobbins, a lifelong Red Sox fan thanks to his die-hard father, made that comment. Judge wasted no time getting back at Dobbins on the field, smashing a 97 mph fastball 436 feet to right-center field for a two-run home run. The ball exited Judge's bat at 108.6 mph, and everyone in the Yankee Stadium crowd knew the tension that was already there with Dobbins' comments making national headlines. "I've only heard Ken Griffey say that, so I was a little surprised," Judge said of Dobbins' comments, via ESPN. He was referencing the Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr., who said he wouldn't sign with the Yankees during his career after seeing how the franchise treated his father, Ken Griffey Sr., while he played for him. In the end, though, Dobbins and the Red Sox got the last laugh. Despite giving up those two runs in the first inning, Dobbins was solid against the Yankees lineup after that. He allowed one more earned run and four hits total over his five innings of work. Boston's offense also unloaded midway through the rivalry game, with Kristian Campbell hitting a two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning to get them on the board. Then, in the top of the sixth inning, a five-spot was put on the home team thanks in part to Carlos Narvàez's three-run homer. The Red Sox would add two runs each in the top of the eighth and ninth innings to ultimately beat their AL East rival 11-7, winning their first series of the year two games to one. Judge went yard once more in the bottom of the ninth inning to cut the Red Sox's lead to four, going to the bullpen in right-center to finish his night 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI. Despite the loss over the weekend, the Yankees are still leading the division at 39-25. However, the Red Sox perhaps found some new life beating one of the best teams in baseball in this series. They are now 32-35 going into the week, where they will see New York once again with a weekend grudge match at Fenway Park in Boston. As of now, Dobbins is slated to face the Yankees in his next start. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Detroit Tigers are No. 1 in most MLB power rankings
More than one-third of the way into the MLB season, the Detroit Tigers have the best record in baseball at 43-24. They also solidified their status as a top-tier contender after taking two of three games against the National League Central-leading Chicago Cubs over the past weekend. The Tigers also sold out all three of their home games against the Cubs, the first time this season they have sold out every game of a home series. Advertisement Spirits are high for Tigers fans, and now the national media is starting to recognize Detroit as MLB's premier team. This week's power ranking roundup shows a clean sweep of the Tigers in the top position—with the exception of one outlet (we'll get to them in a second). Here is a roundup of power rankings from MLB analysts and where they place the Tigers: USA TODAY listed the Tigers as the No. 2 team in baseball in last week's power rankings, behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers. But with more Dodgers pitchers landing on the injured list and the team going 5-5 in their last 10 games, they cede the No. 1 spot this week to Detroit. has the Tigers as their No. 1 team for the second week in a row, with Will Leitch highlighting the team's expanding lead in the American League Central: Advertisement "A whole bunch of teams in the AL Central have been losing enough games lately that the Tigers may well put this division away here in the next couple of weeks. They are now all the way up to a seven-game lead, which is actually already more games than the Guardians won this division by last year." SEIDEL: World Series preview? Who cares. Detroit Tigers matched electric crowd and met moment CBS' Matt Snyder has the Tigers ranked as the No. 1 team in baseball for the second week in a row, giving praise to the team's ace (and Cy Young favorite): "Tarik Skubal in 83⅓ innings has 105 strikeouts and seven walks. That is just absolutely stupid." Here's the one holdout, with Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter listing the New York Mets over the Tigers in his most recent power ranking. Advertisement Much like Snyder, Reuter also praises Skubal and another key member of the team's pitching staff: "Tarik Skubal (7.2 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 6 K) and Jack Flaherty (6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 9 K) pitched the Tigers to a series victory over the Cubs with a pair of terrific starts, and that could be a glimpse into what awaits in October if they maintain their fantastic start." Even before the Tigers took two of three games against the Cubs (as ESPN's power rankings were published on Thursday, June 5) the Tigers were listed as the No. 1 team in baseball. And even before Flaherty's strong start against the Cubs, ESPN was singing his praises: Advertisement "After serving up four home runs to the Rangers on May 10 and seeing his ERA rise to 4.61, Jack Flaherty has reeled off a 2.22 ERA over his past four starts. He is looking much more like the pitcher the Tigers had in the first half of 2024 before they traded him to the Dodgers then re-signed him as a free agent over the winter."
