Thirteen-year-old first rabies case in Sarawak this year
The case involved a 13-year-old teen in Kampung Segedup near here who displayed symptoms of fever, lack of appetite, vomiting, hallucinations, raving and hydrophobia on May 21.
'The victim is being treated at the Sarawak General Hospital and the state health department has confirmed the patient has rabies.
'Usually if they reach this stage, it's really hard to recover... we have taken preventive measures by catching stray dogs around the area and the stray cat has been confirmed dead,' he said at a media conference of the Rabies in Borneo 2025 conference at the state assembly building today, adding that local authorities are intensifying efforts to control stray cats and dogs in the area.
He also advised the public to be vigilant about the threat of rabies and to seek hospital treatment if attacked by animals before the virus affects the brain and nerves.
'This year we took 21 cat samples, two of them confirmed positive for rabies... most rabies infection cases are from animal bites and victims should immediately go to the hospital for an injection.
'But if the victim delays going to hospital and the virus reaches the brain it can be irreversible and it is painful... that's what we want to avoid,' he said.
According to the Sarawak Health Department, there have been 63,301 cases of dog bites, 57,210 cases of cat bites or scratches and 1,832 cases involving other animal bites reported since 2017 till the 20th epidemiological week for 2025 (May 11 to 17, 2025)
On the rabies conference, Stephen expressed hope that it would provide solutions to ensure countries in Borneo are free of rabies.
'We want more parties involved to understand the danger of animals carrying the rabies virus... so for this conference we invited Sabah, Kalimantan, Indonesia and Brunei to share how to tackle the issue.
'We also invited countries that have successfully tackled rabies to share their experiences and to ensure we implement more effective policies,' he said.

Milestone for Sarawak's livestock sector as 800 live pigs shipped to Selangor

Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom described the occasion as a significant step in the state's journey towards becoming a net food exporter by 2030. 'Today we are witnessing 800 heads of pig all the way to Selangor. This event is indeed very significant. In fact, it is a historic moment that we have to share not only with Sarawakians, but also with Malaysians and the world – that we are now able to export live pigs. 'And in the future, perhaps poultry and more. This has been a dream for us. Becoming a net food exporter by 2030 is a gigantic task, but nonetheless, we are making it happen. 'Once people see that it can be done, they get motivated. And once they believe it's possible, the rest is just history,' he told reporters at the official loading ceremony at Pending Port. The shipment is expected to arrive in Klang within 60 hours or approximately two and a half days. Dr Rundi said this first shipment to Peninsular Malaysia would not be the last. 'In the future, there will be bigger shipments and consignment containers that we send to Selangor. They can have the abattoir in Selangor and the meat can be distributed all throughout West Malaysia. And also the plan is to send directly to Penang and Johor,' he said. The pigs were supplied by Green Breeder Sdn Bhd, a Sarawak-based company led by Dr Ng Siew Thiam and his family, who currently export approximately 2,000 pigs weekly to Singapore. Dr Rundi commended the company's efforts and biosecurity standards, noting their success in maintaining exports even during the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak that impacted many other regions. 'Sarawak has been fortunate to remain an exporter of live pigs to Singapore, and now, other Asean countries may also be looking at us in the same light. 'Sarawak is free from foot and mouth disease (FMD) and that gives us a real advantage and leverage in attracting investors and encouraging more livestock farming activities here in the state,' he explained. Dr Rundi pointed out Sarawak first began exporting live pigs to Singapore in 2017, starting with a farm in Simunjan. He said the initial goal was to involve smallholder farmers, but biosecurity and technological requirements proved challenging. 'Not many could survive under such tight protocols, so we had to move from subsistence farming to high tech. Dr Ng told me they are going all the way with high-tech systems and biosecurity. That's why they can survive,' he said. To support the livestock sector's growth, Dr Rundi said the state will establish a new School of Veterinary Medicine in Semenggok through a collaboration with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Sarawak, formerly known as UPM Bintulu Campus. 'At the moment, we are lacking veterinarians. We need many more to manage and support the livestock industry. 'When we visited Brazil, they had 4,000 vets looking after their cattle. Here, we have only 15 government vets handling everything, while the rest are private. So, it has to be comprehensive – we must plan everything properly so that we can realise the dream we have. 'With this initiative, we can plan more effectively for the future of the livestock and agricultural sectors in Sarawak. I see great potential for Sarawak to become an agricultural hub,' he added. On the issue of pork prices, Dr Rundi said the government is monitoring the situation, but market rates are ultimately driven by supply and demand. 'When you talk about business, it's supply and demand. What we need now is to increase the supply to help reduce the price. 'At the moment, the supply is limited, so prices go up. That's why everyone is craving for it and they have to pay for it. But if we can increase production and volume, we will have better control over supply and pricing,' he said. He explained that the government is taking steps to prevent prices from soaring too high. 'At the moment, the price is around RM32 per kg. In Sabah, it's RM45, and in West Malaysia, even more — over RM40 to RM45 in the Klang Valley. We are the cheapest now. We cannot complain — but still we complain,' he added. Blood donation drive sees strong turnout in honour of Warriors' Day

KUCHING (July 20): Nearly 100 individuals participated in a blood donation campaign held at the Kuching Indian Association's Hall at Rock Road here on Saturday, July 19. Organised in conjunction with the Warriors' Day 2025, the event was a joint initiative by the Sarawak Veteran Affairs Department (JHEV) and Malaysian Armed Forces Indian Veteran Association (Perim). Among the notable guests of honour were Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng and state Ministry of Natural Resources and Rural Development's Special Officer Lt Gen Datuk Stephen Mundaw. A significant number of the blood donors were veterans, who came forward to support the replenishment of the Sarawak General Hospital's blood bank. Private healthcare firm fined RM50,000 for running unlicensed ambulatory care centre in Kuching
The offence was committed at the company's premises located at Jalan Simpang Tiga here around 11am on April 6, 2023. – Photo from KUCHING (June 12): The Sessions Court here today fined a private healthcare company RM50,000 for operating an unlicensed ambulatory care centre in 2023. Judge Iris Awen Jon imposed the fine after the company's director pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 3(c) of the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act 1998, punishable under Section 5(1)(b) of the same Act. The Section provides for a fine not exceeding RM500,000 upon conviction. According to the charge, the company had operated a private ambulatory care centre without a licence. The offence was committed at the company's premises located at Jalan Simpang Tiga here around 11am on April 6, 2023. Based on the facts of the case, the Sarawak Health Department through its Private Medical Practice Control Section raided the premises on suspicion of operating an ambulatory care centre without approval from the Ministry of Health. During the inspection, two individuals acting as representatives of the premises failed to produce any documents related to the registration or licensing of the facility when requested by enforcement officers. Based on the testimony and evidence gathered during the inspection, it was found that the premises was operating as a private ambulatory care centre without a valid licence, offering medical treatments including enhanced external counter pulsation (EECP) therapy and intravenous drip treatment. The raiding team also seized various medications and equipment, including a stethoscope, blood pressure set, automated external defibrillator device, EECP machine, electrocardiogram machine, oxygen cylinder, Nitroglycerin Sublingual tablets, Sodium Chloride 0.9 per cent solution, patient records, and other documents. During the proceedings, Sarawak Health Department prosecuting officer Norzaizeli Abu Samah urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence on the company, citing public interest and potential medico-legal implications in the event of medical negligence. She noted that the company had offered EECP treatment at its premises, administered by a general practitioner. Norzaizeli stressed that such treatment requires – at minimum – a licensed private ambulatory care centre overseen by a cardiologist or internal medicine specialist.
