Season of comebacks: Why Arsenal's Uefa Women's Champions League win is a remarkable achievement

Indian Express25-05-2025

Arsenal forward Stina Blackstenius struck a late winner as the London team shocked holders Barcelona 1-0 on Saturday to claim their second Uefa Women's Champions League title and first in 18 years to the delight of their 5,000 travelling fans.
Arsenal beat Real Madrid, Lyon, and finally, Barcelona on their way to a second UWCL title. Between them, Lyon and Barcelona had won the last nine editions of UWCL and Arsenal ended that streak. Already the only English side to become European champions back in 2007, Arsenal extended that tally in 2025. Remarkably, Arsenal recovered from a poor start to the season that led to the departure of former manager Jonas Eidevall and the appointment of Renee Slegers. The knockout stage wins were thrilling comebacks as Arsenal overturned a 2-0 first leg loss to then dismantle Real Madrid 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, it was an away comeback as they beat powerhouses Lyon 4-1 at their home to advance 5-3 on aggregate.

Club legend Leah Williamson, who was outstanding in defence, was a mascot at Arsenal's 2007 victory over Sweden's Umea. 'A lot of this team have been together for a long time and to be able to do it on the biggest day, some people had the game of their lives,' she said. 'I'm so happy. I'm trying not to swear or cry.'
The win comes against a mighty Barcelona team considered on paper to be the best in the world. Barca midfielder Aitana Bonmati called the loss 'absolutely devastating.'
'I don't believe it,' the 2023 and '24 women's Ballon d'Or winner told Catalan TV. 'I just want to start the game again and do it differently. Personally, this hurts me a lot.' Barcelona were playing in their sixth final in seven years and had hoisted the trophy in three of the past four campaigns. Saturday's reverse was just their fourth loss of the season across all competitions.
In the title clash, Arsenal withstood a flurry of Barca chances before Blackstenius broke the deadlock in the 75th minute. The Sweden international latched onto fellow substitute Beth Mead's reverse pass in a crowded area and fired a low diagonal shot past goalkeeper Catalina Coll at the Estadio Jose Alvalade. They held on to win against a Barca side going for a third straight Champions League title. Blackstenius almost struck a couple of minutes before her goal but Coll stuck out a leg to stop her shot from 12 metres.
'Amazing,' Arsenal forward Alessia Russo told TNT Sports through tears. 'We had to suffer a lot. They're a top side. We knew coming into this game that we'd have to suffer and there would be moments when we wouldn't have the ball and we would have to be content and happy with not having the ball knowing our moment would come. Our squad just wanted it so badly.'
The Arsenal players stood arm-in-arm in front of their red-clad fans after the final whistle singing along to Queen's 'We are the Champions'.
'We knew it was going to be a game of momentum shifts because we respect Barcelona, we know how good they are on the ball but we also know how good we are,' Slegers told TNT, through a voice hoarse from celebrating.
'So we knew that momentum was going to shift. Maybe other people were thinking something else, but that's what we believed. In all the phases that happened in the game, the mentality we showed, the resilience we showed, the effectiveness in all our actions, our belief, it was incredible.'

Nathan Lyon Urges AUS To Not Take SA Challenge Lightly: 'They Are Class...'

Last Updated: Nathan Lyon cautions Australia against underestimating South Africa's batting ahead of the ICC World Test Championship final, noting the Proteas' strong form and key players. As Australia prepares to defend their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) title at Lord's starting June 11, veteran spinner Nathan Lyon has warned his team not to underestimate South Africa's formidable batting lineup. Despite entering the one-off final as favorites, Lyon remains cautious, especially given the Proteas' impressive form during the WTC cycle. During Australia's training session in Beckenham, Lyon acknowledged that while past experiences in major finals could benefit his side, they won't hold much weight once play begins. 'Having the experience of the guys who have won three (50-over) World Cups and T20 World Cups and obviously the World Test Championship final a couple of years ago, that experience and that pressure in those higher games, it's going to be, it's on our side isn't it but it doesn't mean anything when you come to the game," Lyon was quoted by ICC as saying. 'South Africa have got some world class batters and obviously they've got some unbelievable bowlers there as well so it's going to be a good challenge and obviously it's a one-off Test match." 'It's going to be different challenge and with foreign conditions and the Dukes ball." South Africa's strong performance in the ongoing red-ball circuit is catalyst for Lyon's concerns. Opener Ryan Rickelton arrives in London fresh off a blistering 259 in his last outing, while captain Temba Bavuma and middle-order mainstay David Bedingham both amassed over 600 runs during the WTC cycle. Having closely followed South Africa's warm-up matches, Lyon identified Rickelton, Aiden Markram, and Bedingham as key threats. 'They're class players, there's no point hiding from that fact," he said. Lyon, who last played in Australia's Test win over Sri Lanka in February, confirmed he is now fully fit and is match-ready after recovering from a hip issue. 'I haven't stopped training since the Sri Lanka series. I've been bowling for five to six weeks now, and everything — from my workload to how the ball is coming out — feels spot on," he added. With both teams in possession of world-class bowling attacks with the challenging conditions of Lord's and the Dukes ball in play, Lyon anticipates a hotly contested match. 'It's going to be the two best bowling attacks going at each other. That's an exciting challenge for every batter out there," he commented. (with IANS inputs) First Published:

KL Rahul Slams Century In Unofficial Test, Boosts Hopes Ahead Of England Series

KL Rahul has emerged as one of the most dependable and experienced batsmen in the Indian Test setup, especially after the retirement of stalwarts like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Now carrying the dual responsibility of seniority and form, Rahul's experience on English soil is expected to play a pivotal role in the upcoming five-match Test series against England, starting June 20. In a promising sign for Team India, Rahul struck a magnificent century against the England Lions in the second unofficial Test at Northampton. His composed innings of 116 not only anchored India A's batting but also signaled a welcome return to form. His knock, filled with patience, poise, and precise shot selection, will boost both his confidence and that of the Indian management ahead of the big series. KL Rahul Approached The BCCI After the conclusion of IPL 2025, Rahul reportedly approached BCCI officials, expressing his keen interest in participating in the second unofficial Test. His inclusion paid immediate dividends as he made a strong statement with the bat. Rahul built crucial partnerships with Karun Nair and Dhruv Jurel, showcasing his ability to stabilize the innings and lead from the front. KL Rahul And Karun Nair's Partnership Rahul and Nair's partnership proved to be vital in navigating India A through early trouble. With disciplined footwork and a calm temperament, the duo absorbed pressure admirably. While Nair looked fluent off the back foot, Rahul stayed composed during a challenging morning session, ensuring India A reached lunch without further damage. By the end of Day 1, India A found themselves in a comfortable position. Rahul's century was undoubtedly the highlight, while handy contributions from Nair, Jurel, and Reddy helped the side consolidate their advantage.
