Eight students reach Speak for India K'taka finals after intense competition
Bengaluru: Confidence radiated from college students as they stepped on to the stage, took the mic, and spoke with clarity and conviction during the semi-finals of Speak for India–Karnataka edition.

Federal Bank Hormis Memorial Foundation
in association with The Times of India and Vijay Karnataka, the event saw participants deliver powerful speeches with ease.
It was held Monday at
Kristu Jayanti College
(Autonomous), Bengaluru, with 29 students from across the state competing for a spot in the finals, scheduled to be held Tuesday at the same venue.
Eight finalists emerged from the round: Amshu Hegde (Yuvaraja's College, Mysuru), Vasudeva Thilak (Vaikunta Baliga College of Law, Udupi), Ananya Vinod (Reva University, Bengaluru), Ifra Ayesha (School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru), Chinmay Gowda KT (University Law College, Bangalore University), Manya MV (MS Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences, Bengaluru), Chandan M Naik (MES College ACS, Bengaluru), and Prateek Hegde (JSS SMI UG & PG Studies, Dharwad).
The panel of judges included author and public speaker Abhishek Shivaram, academic and former state-level debater Shrutha Nadig, and Kumaran P, assistant editor at Happiest Health.
Judge Abhishek Shivaram, author and public speaker, called the session "extremely enthralling" and applauded the participants for their performance. "The quality of debaters was top-notch, and we as judges found it extremely difficult to do the scoring! Great job TOI and Federal Bank," he said.
Judge Shrutha Nadig added, "It was a pleasure to serve as a judge for the debate competition. The session was challenging, with participants showcasing remarkable skill and insight. We look forward to witnessing more such events in the future."
Chandan Naik, the finalist from MES College, Malleswaram, expressed his excitement, saying: "The D in Democracy stands for debate and discussion. The Speak for India debate competition upholds that spirit among the youths of the country.

Students descended from different parts of the state to rub shoulders with their peers. Speak for India provides a platform for college students to voice their views on contemporary issues and become the change-makers of society. Top debaters in Karnataka were identified through multiple levels of competition. Students could choose Kannada or English as their preferred language to debate in.
The winner will get a cash prize of Rs 2.5 lakh, while the runner-up will receive Rs 1.5 lakh. Each of the finalists stands to win Rs 50,000.

Andhra Govt to transfer Rs 15,000 per student to mothers starting June 12
Andhra Pradesh will disburse Rs 8,745 crore on Thursday under a direct benefit scheme for mothers of school students. What is Talliki Vandanam According to a press release cited by PTI, the scheme offers financial support to mothers of children enrolled in school. The amount of Rs 15,000 is intended to ease the cost of education and encourage school attendance. On June 12, the state government will begin direct benefit transfers (DBT) of these funds into the bank accounts of beneficiaries. This date also marks one year since the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led coalition returned to power. Who will benefit? Eligible beneficiaries include students enrolled in Class 1 to Intermediate First Year (equivalent to 11th standard). The funds will be disbursed once school admissions are completed and data is verified, the state government said. However, there is still uncertainty about whether the transfer pertains to the academic year 2024–25 or 2025–26, as the official release did not clarify this detail. Part of a larger welfare push Talliki Vandanam is among several welfare initiatives promised by Naidu during the 2024 election campaign under the 'Super Six' umbrella. What should beneficiaries do? Mothers of students should ensure their bank account details are correctly linked with the school and education department records. Once school admissions are completed, the funds will be automatically transferred through DBT to the linked accounts. This initiative reflects the state government's growing emphasis on education-linked welfare and is likely to have a significant financial impact on low- and middle-income families in Andhra Pradesh.

Villa, 19 plots, 3 buildings, cars: Telangana engineer held in anti-corruption raids
A villa, multiple flats, commercial space, independent buildings, 16 acres of agricultural land, 19 prime open plots, two four-wheelers, gold ornaments and substantial bank deposits — this is the wealth unearthed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau during raids on Nune Sridhar, an Executive Engineer with the Telangana Irrigation and Command Area Development was arrested for allegedly amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. A case of Disproportionate Assets was registered against him for acquiring properties through unlawful means and by misusing his official position. According to the Anti-Corruption Bureau, he is accused of 'indulging in unlawful practices and dubious means' during his were carried out at his residence and 13 other premises associated with him and his relatives. The Anti-Corruption Bureau stated that the high-value properties include a villa in Tellapur, a flat in Shaikpet, three flats in Karimnagar, commercial space in Ameerpet, and independent buildings in Hyderabad, Warangal and Karimnagar. In addition, 19 residential prime open plots and 16 acres of agricultural land were also found in Hyderabad, Warangal and Karimnagar. The bureau added that the market value of these assets is significantly higher than their officially recorded value. According to sources, Sridhar was previously associated with the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project. Parents raise concerns at Telangana Education Commission meet
HYDERABAD: Parents and other stakeholders raised numerous queries and concerns, particularly regarding steep fee hikes in private junior colleges, at the public hearing on Intermediate education, held by the Telangana Education Commission (TEC), on Wednesday. Participants flagged key issues such as the introduction of English medium instruction, lecturer absenteeism, poor infrastructure and unfilled teaching posts in government junior colleges (GJCs). Several parents shared their grievances over the annual fee hikes, which they claimed, rise by 30% to 40% every year. 'This is happening due to the absence of a proper fee regulation body,' said Suresh, a parent. They urged TEC to implement a regulatory framework without further delay. TEC members reviewed the challenges faced by GJCs and the growing commercialisation of intermediate education by private colleges. They stressed the need for stricter oversight and stronger government institutions. Suggestions included introducing English medium classes, engineering coaching, infrastructure upgrades, and immediate recruitment of lecturers. Meanwhile, private junior college representatives appealed to the commission to expedite pending fee reimbursement dues. TRSMA submits memo to Union education minister Hyderabad: The Telangana Recognised School Management Association (TRSMA) submitted a memorandum to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday and urged him to introduce annual in-service teacher training programmes through National Institute of Open Schooling. In the letter, the Union minister was apprised of key concerns and proposals for the development and financial empowerment of budget private schools, including provision of low-interest loans to help upgrade school infrastructure.
