People have seen through false narratives about SAD: Ghumman
The Ludhiana West bypoll is SAD candidate, advocate Parupkar Singh Ghumman's debut in electoral politics. Talking to Nidhi Bhardwaj, Ghumman discusses the shift from courtroom to constituency.
Here are excerpts of the conversation.
Q: How are you positioning yourself before voters and what are your plans for the West constituency?
A: First, people should look at what the AAP government did for the past 3.5 years to judge what it will do in the remaining period. The AAP government has failed on each front, including education, health, law and order, trade, etc. AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora remained a Rajya Sabha member for more than three years but what are his achievements? As for the Congress, its tenure was also terrible. People realise that only
Shiromani Akali Dal
can handle Punjab and its issues.
The BJP is not pro-Punjab, as even the Punjab BJP team has never asked for a special economic zone. I plan to raise my voice in the Punjab Assembly for development works in the West constituency. People who know me are aware of my passion for development and I will get the work done.
Q: You are totally new to electoral politics and are facing national parties and their top leaders. How are you holding up?
A: I don't think that's a big deal.

Had they done anything for people, they would not need to bring bigwigs to the city for the campaign. Moreover, winning or losing any election depends on the candidate's credibility and powers of persuasion. By organising such grand shows, they are causing inconvenience to people, who get stuck in traffic jams. I would also have done such things, but we are avoiding public inconvenience.
Q: A few elections in the past did not go well for Shiromani Akali Dal. What do you think is the scope now?
A: The perception that only the ruling party can win a bypoll is not based on facts.
No doubt Shiromani Akali Dal did not do well in the past few elections, but it was because a narrative had been peddled against us on issues like sacrilege, drugs, and farmers. Gradually, people have become aware of all the issues and the reality behind them. Farmers have also realised that an illusion was created against Shiromani Akali Dal by the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party.
People know that during the SAD government, there was communal harmony between Hindus and Sikhs.
Q: How will SAD, which is divided into several groups, especially the Ayali group, cope with infighting?
A: Where we have large families, small fights happen. Gradually things get resolved. As of now, there are two groups. MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali still counts himself as an Akali. My only message to him is that if he still admits that he belongs to Akali Dal, then he should come and join this election campaign like other leaders of the party.
There is a need to give up ego and join hands for the welfare of Punjab and its people.
Q: What is your vision for the constituency and city?
A: I have travelled across the world and seen how countries are growing. If we look at Dubai, it has no resources but one man developed this country. Here in Punjab, Sukhbir Singh Badal has that vision. He can transform this state completely like he did in his previous tenure. In Ludhiana West and Ludhiana specifically, we have great scope for the industry.
If given a chance, I will develop the city as a medical tourism hub.
Then we have a natural stream, Sidhwan Canal. We can develop this canal as a tourist centre like foreign countries. I will work to resolve issues like Buddha Dariya and City Centre. Government employees will not be burdened.

Flying suitcases packed with Hard Drives to China, taking hundreds of servers on rent and ...: How Chinese AI companies dodge US chip ban
(AI image) In a bid to bypass stringent U.S. restrictions on advanced AI chips, Chinese companies are resorting to innovative workarounds, including processing data abroad. According to a recent Wall Street Journal report, in early March, four Chinese engineers traveled from Beijing to Malaysia, each carrying a suitcase with 15 hard drives containing 80 terabytes of data for training an AI model. At a Malaysian data center, the engineers utilized approximately 300 servers equipped with Nvidia's advanced chips to develop the AI model, which they later brought back to China. Smuggling AI hardware Since 2022, the U.S. has tightened export controls on high-end AI chips to China, citing national security concerns. According to WSJ report, these restrictions have limited Chinese firms' access to cutting-edge American technology, prompting them to explore alternatives. Some have substituted domestic chips for American ones, while others have smuggled AI hardware through third countries. However, increased U.S. pressure has made smuggling more challenging, pushing Chinese companies to process data outside China in regions like Southeast Asia and the Middle East. 'This was something we were consistently concerned about,' said Thea Kendler, former head of export controls at the Commerce Department under the Biden administration, referring to Chinese firms' remote access to U.S. AI chips, told WSJ. The process involves layers of intermediaries, obscuring whether U.S. regulations are being violated. The Biden administration proposed country-specific caps on American chip purchases to curb such activities, but the Trump administration scrapped these in May, citing unnecessary regulatory burdens on U.S. companies like Nvidia. Instead, it issued guidance urging firms to prevent their chips from being used to train Chinese AI models. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo How and why China uses countries in Southeast Asia as base In Malaysia, the Chinese company's operation required meticulous planning. Engineers reportedly spent over eight weeks optimizing data sets in China, as transferring large data volumes online could take months. Last July, the company worked through a Singaporean subsidiary but later registered a Malaysian entity to avoid scrutiny after Nvidia and its vendors intensified end-user audits. To evade suspicion at Malaysian customs, the engineers distributed hard drives across four suitcases, a shift from bundling them into one the previous year. They returned to China with several hundred gigabytes of model parameters guiding the AI system's output. Southeast Asia is reported to be emerging as a hub for such activities, with data centers rapidly expanding. Jones Lang LaSalle estimates nearly 2,000 megawatts of data-center capacity in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia -- matching Europe's largest markets. Malaysia's AI chip imports from Taiwan surged to $3.4 billion in March and April, exceeding its 2024 total. Meanwhile, the Middle East is also becoming a destination for Chinese AI developers, with Nvidia recently announcing significant chip sales to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE. These maneuvers highlight the challenges of enforcing U.S. export controls as Chinese companies exploit global data centers to access American technology. While Southeast Asian authorities, like Singapore's, are cracking down on transshipments, the region's booming infrastructure continues to attract both Western and Chinese clients, testing the limits of regulatory oversight. Centre flags ethanol levy as threat to green fuel mission, urges Punjab, Haryana, Himachal to reconsider fees
CHANDIGARH: The Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has written to the governments of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, urging them to reconsider the fee levied on ethanol production in their respective excise policies, warning that the move may hamper the ethanol blending programme and escalate fuel prices. The ministry, in its letters to these state governments, stated that the provision to levy a Regulatory Fee (Ethanol Permit/Pass) in their excise policies could restrict the free movement of ethanol within and outside the states. This, it noted, would ultimately increase the cost of ethanol-blended petrol. The letters were addressed individually by Additional Secretary in the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Parveen M Khanooja. The letter to Himachal Pradesh Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena was sent on March 27, followed by a letter to Punjab Chief Secretary KAP Sinha on April 8, and another to Haryana Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi on May 23. This newspaper has copies of all three letters. Interestingly, of the three states, Punjab has an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, Himachal Pradesh is governed by the Congress, while Haryana is ruled by the BJP. 'It has been brought to the ministry's notice by oil marketing companies (OMCs) that as per the excise policy 2025–27 of Haryana state, there is a substantial increase in the licence fee/annual renewal fee for distilleries. Also, the aforesaid policy has introduced a fee of Rs 1 per bulk litre (BL) for issuance of pass for ethanol for mixing in petrol for use as automobile fuel." "Additionally, an import duty of Rs 1.20 per bulk litre has also been levied. Given that ethanol is already subject to Goods and Services Tax (GST), imposing an additional excise duty would constitute double taxation, which runs contrary to sound taxation principles and could be legally untenable, especially for a production crucial to a national programme like the ethanol blended petrol programme. "Furthermore, the increased costs resulting from the proposed fees and duty in excise policy 2025–27 are likely to raise the price of ethanol-blended petrol. Haryana and Punjab appear to be the sole states where such levies on ethanol specifically meant for blending with petrol have been imposed,' states the letter written to Rastogi by Khanooja.
