Gail Porter wows with wig transformation 20 years after alopecia diagnosis
Gail Porter has been showered with compliments from fans after stepping out wearing a wig.
The Scottish TV personality began losing her hair to alopecia – a condition that causes hair loss or baldness in some or all areas of the body – in 2005.
Several years later, her lashes and brows began growing back, and she sported a short, cropped look.
However, in 2010, the former model revealed that she had started losing her hair once more, and the following year, she unveiled a shaved head again.
Gail, 54, has always refused to wear a wig or hairpieces to conceal her baldness, having been keen on raising awareness of alopecia.
However, in recent years, she's started to experiment more, and last year, she unveiled a mid-length blonde wig to her followers.
Then, last night, she rocked a dramatic new look, heading to the British LGBT Awards with long locks.
The ceremony has been held annually since 2014 and is a huge moment in the LGBTQ+ community's calendar, with the likes of Jade, Billy Porter, and Ian 'H' Watkins receiving trophies this time.
Ahead of walking the red carpet, Gail took to Instagram to debut her blonde tresses, which she wore in waves as they cascaded down past her waist.
She tagged Amber Jean Rowan in the caption, thanking the wig maker – who has also made wigs for Strictly's Amy Dowden after her cancer treatment.
Taking to the comments, her 81,000 followers were keen to heap praise on her, with some having to do a double-take to make sure it was really her.
'Stunning 😍😍 Gawjeeeeus 😍😍', commented @mcchalkiewhite.
'Wow Gail. Beautiful with it and Beautiful without it', wrote @christine_anne_garstin.
'Gail you look amazing 😍😍😍', complimented @tinabear1969.
'Wow had to look twice 👏 looks really good 👍', wrote @neilcornish13.
Gail removed her wig for the event itself, posing proudly on the carpet alongside some of the UK's biggest LGBTQ+ talent and allies.
The former children's television presenter got her first wig in 20 years in January 2024, which she debuted on social media.
She wrote at the time: 'First wig ever!! Well, one that's coming home with me and the cat! Made with so much love and care ❤️Thank you so so much to everyone at @amberjeanshop Adore my new hair! X'
Speaking previously about losing her hair, the ex-Celebrity Big Brother housemate explained to Metro that she was forced to sleep on benches when work dried up as a result of her refusing to wear a wig.
Gail found that TV shows were only interested in booking her if she would talk about 'being bald', which also came while going through her divorce with her former husband and Toploader guitarist Dan Hipgrave.
As her situation worsened in the mid-00s, Gail was unable to make ends meet as she became 'more and more depressed'.
When appearing on the BBC Access All Podcast in August 2023, Gail also explained that work dried up very rapidly.
'It was so quick,' she said. 'I had long blonde hair, and then four weeks later I was completely bald.
'People didn't want to go near me for television or anything because I looked different.' More Trending
Last year, she was also praised for taking on her first photoshoot in a wig, with Sue Schilling, the chief executive of Alopecia UK, saying it is key to give people options as there is neither a 'right' nor a 'wrong' way to have alopecia.
Gail added to The Sun at the time: 'I don't think I'm a role model, but if me being bald or me wearing a wig gives someone the confidence to go and try it for themselves, I'm glad.
'I like the fact that women and men talk to me about hair loss.'

Jenny Powell, 57, spills the truth behind her age-defying looks
EXCLUSIVE: Jenny Powell has been a fixture on our screens for more than three decades - and she's barely aged a day and now the TV star tells us how she keeps looking so youthful Jenny Powell is the TV face that simply does not age — and now she's finally lifted the lid on exactly how she keeps looking so fresh-faced at 57 (only just!), from high-tech blood treatments to the teen daughter who keeps her feeling twenty years younger. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, the presenter - who first won hearts on Wheel of Fortune and is now hosting the Rewind Festival - laughs off her reputation as Britain's forever-youthful TV darling. 'People always say to me: 'Oh my God, you haven't aged!'' Jenny giggles. 'I go to a few people for remedies and treatments, and I said to one of them, what should I tell people? He said, 'Well, some of it's your genes, Jenny — but you do look after yourself!' And I suppose I do.' Yoga, a sprinkle of magic vitamins — and a bit of 21st century science, too. Jenny, who lives in South Manchester with fiancé Martin Lowe, 51, and their youngest daughter Pollyanna, 16, says it's a mix of ancient and cutting-edge secrets keeping her glowing. 'I do hot yoga about three times a week and I've just started Reformer too — it really keeps my mind and body in shape,' she says. 'I don't drink much, but I'm taking NAD now — I love it! It basically regenerates your cells after your 40s. I have it intravenously, which is pricey, about £300 a pop, but you feel amazing after. Then you switch to supplements to keep it up. It's fascinating stuff!' And the ultimate fountain of youth? Her teenage daughter Pollyanna. 'My kids keep me young. I've got a 24-year-old, but I had Pollyanna when I was like 40, 41. So I've still got a 16-year-old at 57. I have to keep up with her for a start! So I think it's just a combo of that. Just looking after yourself. Yoga's amazing for me." But behind the glam facade, Jenny admits it hasn't all been plain sailing. Last year, she made headlines when she spoke candidly about her life-changing hysterectomy - an Instagram post about it racked up a whopping two and a half million views in just 24 hours, sparking a wave of support. 'It was awful,' she says honestly. 'Yeah, it was awful. I had really bad symptoms, which I'd put up with for a very long time, like flooding terribly, like really badly. And migraines. I had backache. I had pelvic congestion, basically, because my uterus was the size of being 14 to 16 weeks pregnant. So it was enlarged. And it had fibroids and I had adenomyosis*(corr), which I didn't even know existed, which is sort of on the outer lining of your uterus." Adenomyosis is a condition where the tissue that normally lines the uterus (endometrium) grows into the muscular wall of the uterus (myometrium). This misplaced tissue continues to behave like normal uterine lining, thickening and bleeding during each menstrual cycle, which can cause heavy, painful periods, and pelvic pain. Today, mental health is top of her list - alongside making time for Martin, who she describes as her rock. 'He's so kind. And I think you're very conscious when you've got kids already. I mean, he hasn't got any kids. I think you're very conscious about who's going to come into the house and the home and get to know your family. 'You're very, very cautious. And he just adores the girls and he always has, Polly was two, three years old when we met and she's now 16. Polly was, she's 24 and she was like nine. I think it's his kindness I fell for. He can't help himself. He just thinks he can fix everyone. He's one of those. And of course, he is gorgeous!" Jenny has learned to prioritise herself as well as her loved ones - and she hopes other women will too. 'If your thoughts get the better of you first thing in the morning, you've had it for the rest of the day. So it's really having your own little mantras or something to the minute you wake up, you set your mindset in the right place. 'So, you know, even if it's singing your favourite song first thing when you wake up, putting frequencies on or repeating something three times, whatever it is that uplifts you, do it. Do it. Don't go on your bloody phone!" As she gears up to take the mic at this summer's Rewind Festival - and maybe even tackle the Strictly ballroom one day if bosses come calling again — Jenny says she's in no rush to slow down even as she turns 60 in three years. "I'm going to own it. Will I still be in a bikini, that's the question! Of course I will be! I think I'll still be in a bikini in my 60s, but if I'm not, I'm just trying to think why I wouldn't be! That's what we're trying to inspire women to do. It doesn't matter what people say, well, it's what is right for you. As long as I can do some yoga on the beach somewhere, I'll be happy," she beams. Cheers to that Jenny!

Alison Hammond lost for words after being told she's 'repulsive'
Alison Hammond was rendered speechless after receiving an abusive message online. The This Morning presenter, 50, is beloved for her bubbly personality, infectious laugh, and always keeping it real on daytime telly. But while the nation has happily bestowed her with British icon status – which has been truly earned – it appears not everyone agrees. Taking to X last week, one critic simply had to let Alison know what they thought of her, much to everyone's shock. Sadly, the post from 77-year-old @PETER46760847 appeared to make its way to Alison's feed several days later, as she decided to respond last night. His original message read: 'Any time we see you are on TV we switch channels as you turn our stomachs being so fat and repulsive with a huge mouth.' Understandably astounded by the comment, all Alison could write back was: 'Wow !' It didn't take long for Alison's 400,000+ followers to leap to her defence, branding the remarks 'extremely mean and rude'. 'I'd just laugh at them babe, you're beautiful and they obviously are ugly on the inside', wrote @darloviper. 'What a horrible nasty person. How he can say that about you is beyond me, you never fail to make me smile even when I'm feeling low so thank you and keep being you xxx', added @DonnaRa01238683. @icon1_will implored her: 'keep on flooding his TV, WE LOVE YOU'. 'Listen Ali….Forget about those haters!!! Nothing better to do', agreed @jacquijdesigns. Others questioned why the individual was even tweeting Alison in the first place, given that his original tweet was replying to her pinned video, posted in 2021. The Big Brother star is, unfortunately, no stranger to calling out trolls. Last year, she clapped back at a derogatory message following her appearance on Channel 4's Celebrity Bake Off. The viewer tagged Alison and wrote: 'I imagine@AlisonHammond is a real nasty piece of work now, started to beleive her own hype [sic]'. Alison later replied with: 'Why is that I'll be having a lovely day and then someone who doesn't know from Adam writes such nasty message. 'Don't @ me keep Your nasty comment to yourself #bekind always.' When Alison became a This Morning regular alongside Dermot O'Leary in 2020, it's believed she had duty of care meetings with ITV bosses after being bombarded with hate online. Co-presenter Josie Gibson showed support for her after witnessing the barrage of abuse, saying: 'I can't believe some sad little sadsacks can be so vile to one of the most talented, infectious, caring, insanely hard-working, and one of the most beautiful souls on the planet.' She's also been forced to address backlash to her For the Love of Dogs signing, having taken over presenting duties of the much-loved ITV dog show following Paul O'Grady's death. Alison was admittedly 'surprised' by the criticism, telling Heat magazine: 'I could understand in the sense that Paul was so loved, but people were saying, 'How can she do it when she doesn't have a dog? How can she love dogs when she doesn't have one?'' 'It's like saying, 'How can you love children when you haven't got kids?' It's such a flawed argument for me, and all I would say is, if you don't want to watch it, don't watch it.' Trolling has likely only been made more upsetting for Alison over the years when her appearance has been attacked. Speaking on Lorraine Kelly and daughter Rosie's What If? podcast in 2022, she said of weight-shaming trolling: 'Oh my gosh, like every day. Literally, I'm sure there's a tweet or a message. I think I saw a message yesterday from someone, something along the lines of, '[You] need to lose 40 stone,' I'm thinking, 'I'm not even 40 stone!'' More Trending Alison added: 'That would mean I'd be nothing. I'd be dead. Stupid woman. She said that, and I get it all the time, and I know I'm overweight; everyone can see I'm overweight; it's not a surprise to know I'm overweight.' She declared that she likes 'taking up a little bit of space' and is 'OK with it' as she isn't 'hurting anyone.' Over the past year, Alison has been working with a personal trainer after having an 'adult' realisation about her health and lifestyle, opting for dietary changes rather than weight loss medication.
