Former AHS CEO denies defamation claims from Alberta premier's ex-chief of staff
Marshall Smith, who left his position as Premier Danielle Smith's top aide in October 2024, filed a lawsuit against Mentzelopoulos in the wake of her own wrongful dismissal lawsuit against AHS and the provincial government.
While they have the same last name, Marshall Smith and the premier are not related.
Smith alleged Mentzelopoulos made false and defamatory statements about him in court documents filed as part of her wrongful dismissal suit.
His statement of claim also names the Globe and Mail newspaper, its Calgary reporter Carrie Tait, and an unnamed man who is believed to be a former board member for the health authority. He is seeking $12 million in damages.
In a statement of defence filed in Court of King's Bench of Alberta last week, Mentzelopoulos said she hasn't defamed Smith, nor has he suffered damages as a result.
The legal filing calls Smith's allegations "invented attempts to allege harm."
It also says his lawsuit appears to try to "distance Smith himself from certain members of the private sector and to downplay the nature of his role in the history of events appropriately recounted by Ms. Mentzelopoulos in her action against the Crown and AHS."
The statement of defence also says Mentzelopoulos's statements are shielded from defamation action because they were made in the course of judicial proceedings.
None of the allegations in Mentzelopoulos's original lawsuit, or in the subsequent statement of claim and defence related to the Smith lawsuit, have been proven in court.
Mentzelopoulos claims she was fired because she'd launched an investigation and forensic audit into various contracts and was reassessing deals she had concluded were overpriced with private surgical companies she said had links to government officials.
AHS and Adriana LaGrange — the former minister of health who is now the new minister of primary and preventative health services — have denied Mentzelopoulos's claims in statements of defence that allege she was fired due to her job performance.
The province has appointed a former chief judge from Manitoba to conduct a third-party investigation into procurement. The auditor general and Alberta RCMP are also investigating the matter.

29 cases of parasitic infection in Saskatoon Farm outbreak: AHS
Alberta Health Services is continuing to investigate the source of a gastrointestinal outbreak at the Saskatoon Farm's restaurant in July. (File) Alberta Health Services says there are now nearly 30 cases of a serious parasitic infection in connection with an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness at a restaurant at a southern Alberta business last month. AHS says as of Aug. 1, there are 49 probable cases of E. coli among customers who ate at the Saskatoon Farm, east of Okotoks, between July 1 and 18. The agency says among those patients, there have been 29 cases of Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica) infections. One person remains in hospital in connection with the outbreak while two other patients have been released. According to Health Canada, E. histolytica is a worldwide pathogen and the second leading cause of parasitic death. 'It infects an estimated 500 million people per year, causes liver abscess and colitis in 50 million, and results in death of an estimated 40,000-100,000 individuals annually,' the government's website says. Infections are more common in tropical and subtropical areas, such as Mexico, South and West Africa, western South America and South Asia, Health Canada says. Saskatoon Farm restaurant remains closed According to the latest inspection report of the restaurant at Saskatoon Farm, which was conducted on July 29, AHS said two violations were found. Those included the presence of pests in the restaurant and 'a practice or condition at this food establishment is creating a nuisance.' Officials said a live mouse was seen in the Saskatoon Farm bakery at the time of the inspection. No further information was provided by AHS about the 'nuisance' present at the business.

N.B. RCMP investigating sudden deaths near the Kedgwick River
The deaths of two people in northern New Brunswick are under investigation. The Saint-Quentin RCMP detachment responded to a report of two sudden deaths near the Kedgwick River around 5:15 p.m. Monday. Officers found two people who were deceased at the scene. Wawa man faces multiple charges after firearm incident

Altercation escalates to weapon use At about 9:37 p.m. on July 27, OPP responded to reports of an assault on Ontario Street. 'Witnesses reported two individuals had engaged in a verbal argument that turned physical,' police said in a news release. The altercation escalated when one individual allegedly pointed a firearm at the other. Charges laid after investigation Following an investigation, the accused was charged with assault with a weapon, pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and two counts of drug along with four counts of failing to comply with a probation order. The accused was held for a bail hearing and remanded into custody.
