Jon Stewart slams political violence, Trump's parade, and U.S. contradictions on Israel-Iran conflict

Express Tribune18-06-2025
On the June 17 episode of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart delivered an intense monologue dissecting a weekend marked by political violence, foreign tensions, and domestic unrest. From a lackluster military parade to escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran and deadly political attacks in Minnesota, Stewart spared no one in his scathing critique.
He began with Donald Trump's military-themed birthday celebration, mocking the parade's underwhelming display of squeaky tanks and robotic dogs. Stewart contrasted the event with the widespread 'No Kings March' protests, noting how the demonstrations eclipsed the parade in scale and meaning.
Turning to the Israel-Iran conflict, Stewart addressed Israel's recent strikes and Iran's retaliatory attacks. He criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's repeated alarmism over Iran's nuclear capabilities and questioned the U.S.'s role in the region. Highlighting contradictions, Stewart pointed out how MAGA leaders denounce foreign wars while cheering on militarized crackdowns at home.
The most sobering segment focused on political violence in Minnesota, where a state House leader and her husband were killed and a state senator was wounded. Stewart criticized the media's focus on the alleged shooter's political affiliations, calling instead for broader attention to the country's mass shooting epidemic. He condemned the inconsistent government response—swift action on border security but little movement on gun reform—and slammed Senator Mike Lee for politicizing the tragedy through insensitive social media posts.
Stewart's commentary struck a chord with viewers overwhelmed by recent national and international turmoil. His anger, laced with biting satire, echoed the frustration of many Americans seeking accountability and meaningful change.

Pakistan slams ‘Greater Israel' plan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has strongly condemned and rejected recent statements made by the Israeli occupying power, alluding to the creation of so-called 'Greater Israel,' and its designs aimed at the forcible displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, Foreign Office (FO) Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan said this in a statement on Friday. Pakistan calls on the international community to outrightly reject such provocative notions that constitute a flagrant violation of the international law, principles of the United Nations (UN) Charter, as well as the relevant UN resolutions. Such statements reflect the occupying power's intention to entrench its illegal occupation, as well as its complete contempt for all international efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in the region, the FO statement remarked. The international community must take immediate and tangible measures to prevent the occupying power from further destabilising the region, and to end its ongoing crimes and atrocities against the Palestinians. 'Pakistan reaffirms its full support for the Palestinian people's legitimate rights, including the right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent, viable, and contiguous State of Palestine, based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital,' Ambassador Khan asserted. It is worth mentioning here that the Palestinian Authority, Arab League (AL) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have categorically dismissed and condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's 'Greater Israel' plan, criticising the rhetoric as stemming from an 'extremist mindset steeped in a dangerous expansionist approach'. They were of the view that such rhetoric constitutes a violation of the sovereignty of Arab states and an attempt to undermine security and stability in the region. The Israeli government on Thursday approved construction of over 3,401 new houses for Jewish settlers in West Bank, which sparked new controversy. The move was being widely criticised, saying that it would further jeopardise Middle East security and aggravate the already volatile situation due to continued Israeli bombardment and forced starvation in Gaza. Opposition 'bias claim' in civil awards sparks Senate uproar

The upper house of the parliament witnessed uproar on Friday as opposition lawmakers accused the government of politicising this year's civil awards by allegedly favouring ministers and treasury benches, while ignoring deserving figures. The Senate session, chaired by Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani, turned heated after he announced that several cabinet members and senators had been conferred national honours on August 14. Opposition members demanded disclosure of the criteria used for selection. Among the awardees were Ishaq Dar, Mohsin Naqvi, Musadik Malik, Azam Nazeer Tarar, Faisal Sabzwari, Senator Sherry Rehman, Senator Bushra Anjum, Ahsan Iqbal and Ahad Cheema. Irfan Siddiqui and Sarmad Ali are to receive their awards on March 23 next year. Senator Falak Naz Chitrali questioned, "What war did Atta Tarar fight?" while Senator Humayun Mohmand sarcastically remarked that "the designer of the war, Nawaz Sharif, has not been awarded." PTI's Senator Faisal Javed said party social media activists had countered Indian propaganda "day and night" but were ignored, accusing the government of "destroying the sanctity" of the honours. Defending the awards, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said martyrs and heroes of the Marka-e-Haq had been recognised, including those who lost their homes. He said some senators had "fought on diplomatic fronts abroad" and thanked PTI's social media workers for their online role in the campaign. The atmosphere grew tense when Senator Faisal Javed raised the omission of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah's picture from official Independence Day advertisements, displaying the founder's picture on the Senate floor. "Explain, or we will not let this House run," he warned. Tarar expressed ignorance of the matter, called the omission "hurtful" and promised an inquiry. The House later unanimously adopted a resolution lauding the founding fathers, the framers of the Constitution and the armed forces. Earlier, Senator Zeeshan Khanzada criticised that while prisoners often receive sentence remissions on August 14, PTI leaders were instead handed "10-year jail terms like Bata sale rates." Separately, Senator Kamran Murtaza voiced concern over the suspension of mobile internet across 36 districts of Balochistan and alleged closure of rail, road and air links, warning of damage to Pakistan's image. Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry clarified that only mobile internet services had been suspended from August 6 to 31 due to "credible security threats" under the Pakistan Telecommunication (Reorganisation) Act, 1996. He said telephone lines, airline operations, and road and rail links remained functional. "These measures are taken in specific areas facing threats, not across unrelated regions," he said, citing past terror attacks in the province, including on the Jaffar Express and the Army Public School in Khuzdar. On concerns over prepaid internet packages, Dr Chaudhry pledged to take up the matter with the concerned ministry, assuring that unused credit during the suspension period would be carried forward to the next month. The session was adjourned till Monday evening.

Pakistan rejects 'Greater Israel' plan

Foreign Office spokesperson Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan on Friday categorically condemned and rejected the recent statements by the Israeli occupying power suggesting the creation of a so-called "Greater Israel" and plans for the forcible displacement of Palestinians from Gaza. Ambassador Khan, in a statement issued by the Foreign Office here, said such rhetoric was a blatant violation of international law, the UN Charter, and relevant United Nations resolutions. He urged the international community to "outrightly reject" these provocative notions, which he warned were aimed at entrenching Israel's illegal occupation and undermining all efforts toward lasting peace in the region. "These statements demonstrate the occupying power's complete contempt for international efforts and reveal its intention to escalate instability in the region," the spokesperson stressed, calling for immediate and concrete action to halt Israel's ongoing crimes and atrocities against the Palestinian people. Pakistan also expressed deep grief at the tragic loss and damage caused by the recent cloudburst in Kishtwar, IIOJK. "We extend our sincere condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured," the spokesperson added.
