Lesley Garrett cast in Northern Ireland Opera's Follies after cancer surgery

Leader Live2 days ago

Garrett will play Heidi Schiller in Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman's musical about a group of former showgirls, at the Grand Opera House in Belfast in the autumn,
The British soprano said on ITV's This Morning earlier this month that she had cancer surgery after being diagnosed with thymoma, a rare cancer of the thymus gland, which could have affected her singing.
Since the surgery to remove the tumour, she has made a successful recovery and will now be joining the Follies cast.
Garrett said: 'I'm so excited to be coming back to Belfast and especially to be making my debut with Northern Ireland Opera at the age of 70.
'Sondheim's Follies is a masterpiece and I'm delighted to have been given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform the iconic role of Heidi Schiller.'
The production marks the singer's 45th anniversary in the industry and her debut with the Northern Ireland Opera, where she will play the 'opera diva' of the Weismann's Follies.
Set in 1971, the musical follows the group as they return to their former Broadway stage at Weisman Theatre, for a final reunion show before its scheduled demolition.
Jazz singer Jacqueline Dankworth, who was in the original cast of the West End debut for Sondheim's Into The Woods in 1990, will join the cast as Carlotta Campion.
West End stars Anna-Jane Casey and Annette McLaughlin will play former room mates Sally Plummer and Phyllis Stone.
The production is directed by Cameron Menzies, with Greg Arrowsmith as the musical director.
The musical scored seven Tony awards at the 1972 ceremony and is best known for its songs Broadway Baby, I'm Still Here and Losing My Mind.
Follies will run from September 13-20.

POLL: What do you think to Prince Harry's strange plan for his kids?

Prince Harry and Meghan may have stepped back from royal life - but they're not shutting the palace gates for their kids just yet. The couple reportedly want Archie and Lilibet to keep their titles, sparking debate over whether it's about choice … or mixed messages. Despite Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepping away from their royal duties and all the palace drama a while ago, it seems they're keeping the door open for their kids to walk a different path. They reportedly want Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to hang onto their royal titles - just in case they decide they do want to be working royals one day. Apparently, Harry and Meghan see it as giving their kids the option when they're older. But here's where it gets a bit sticky, as the 'plan' comes after the source claimed the Sussexes feared passports for their children were being held up due to the use of their royal titles. ‌ It has all raised a few eyebrows., with former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond asking why the Sussexes are holding so tightly to the titles when they've been so outspoken about wanting out of the royal system in the first place. ‌ So, what do you think? Is Harry being thoughtful about giving his kids future choices — or is it a bit contradictory after everything he and Meghan have said about the monarchy? What do you think to Harry's plan? Take our poll below. If you can't see it, click here Jennie Bond told the Mirror: "I really don't understand why, having extricated themselves from a life they did not enjoy and in which Harry has publicly spoken of 'feeling trapped', they want to give their children the option of re-joining. It makes no sense. "Who knows what's going to happen in the future? But it's very hard to see how two children who are clearly now more American than British would want to change their whole way of life and become working members of the royal family." Archie and Lilibet got prince and princess titles when their grandfather King Charles became monarch in 2022. The first time their titles were formally announced was after Lilibet's christening in March 2023. ‌ Due to the reported hold-up in their British passports, it is said that Harry started to explore the possibility of changing his family surname to Spencer in a nod to his late mother, Princess Diana. And Jennie added: "I think Harry has always been more Spencer than Windsor, so if he was ever going to change his name, it would be to Spencer. "But this would be a final nail in the coffin of his relationship with his father and his brother. It would amount to a public declaration that he no longer saw himself as part of the royal family." ‌ There has been continued controversy over the Sussexes' HRH titles since the pair quit their royal roles five years ago. As part of their Megxit negotiations with the Palace, Meghan and the Duke of Sussex agreed to stop using 'Her Royal Highness' and 'His Royal Highness' at the end of March 2020. They still retain the styles, with Harry having had his since birth, but they are essentially held in abeyance. However, earlier this year, it emerged Meghan had used her HRH style on a gift basket sent to make-up entrepreneur Jamie Kern Lima last year, with a monogrammed card reading: 'With Compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex'. ‌ Kern Lima showed an image of the present in footage of her podcast interview with Meghan. It contained a jar of Meghan's jam which she has started selling as part of her As Ever lifestyle business brand. A source described the basket as a 'personal gift'. The duchess's representatives denied that the couple used them, but a source later said that the Sussexes did not use HRH publicly but retained the style, and did not use it for commercial purposes.

JoJo Siwa and Chris Hughes share sweet update as relationship intensifies

After JoJo, 22, admitted earlier this week that her relationship with Love Island star Chris Hughes, 32, was no longer "platonic", she has shared more of their time together on social media Singer JoJo Siwa has shared a series of clips of her time in London over the last week, as her relationship with Love Island star Chris Hughes has continued to intensify. The couple, who appeared to fall for each other on Celebrity Big Brother, while JoJo was in a relationship, have spent lots of quality time together as JoJo joined her former co-star in the UK. The Dance Moms reality star, 22, has documented her time in London on TikTok, with Chris, 32, featuring heavily in her videos. Her most recent upload was captioned: "What a week and What a camera roll. Mini vlog coming next." ‌ As well as her tour, she has been hosting her Afternoon Tea Party, which saw her fans join her on a double-decker bus as she made her way around London. Adorned with sweet treats and sandwiches from "afternoon tea specialists" Brigit's Bakery, the bus took JoJo and her fans through the capital as they chatted and laughed. ‌ Her video included clips of her and Chris, including him kissing her on the head, them both in hysterics over his comedy glasses and the pair enjoying walks through the park with a coffee. One clip showed her taking part in an interview on Capital radio, in which she admitted, after months of speculation, that she and Chris are an item. Speaking to Capital Buzz on June 2, JoJo said: "I'm sure it's no secret to people, I am in a lovely relationship with a sweet boy named Christopher Hughes." She has also been forced to hit back at claims that her relationship with Chris is a publicity stunt. JoJo told The Guardian at the start of the week: "It's not platonic anymore, and it's been a beautiful development, a beautiful connection, and I'm absolutely head over heels for him and he's the same way.' When asked about suggestions it's for PR, she added: "Clearly, you've never been around us. I won't ever speak for him, but for me personally, the happiness in my life just radiates off of me right now." She added: "Literally yesterday, I was massaging my cheeks; I've never been in pain from smiling so much.' This Morning's Ben Shephard also brought the topic up with reality star Chris Hughes, who was left blushing live on air on Tuesday (June 3) when he congratulated him on his romance with JoJo. Chris shared a now-deleted photo showing the couple cuddling in bed together. ‌ He kissed her on the head while she lay on his chest, with Chris captioning the post: "Sleeping beauty." Speaking live on This Morning, Ben asked Chris: "Can we just say, because obviously we're all talking about, congratulations on the relationship. "We're all very excited. Have we decided on whether it's Hughes-wa? What's the power couple name?" A grinning Chris replied: "They call it CoJo. That's the one they're all going for. Chris-JoJo, it works. It rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? Thanks guys, I appreciate it." ‌ Meanwhile, on the Rosebud podcast with Gyles Brandreth, JoJo gushed about what drew her to Chris, saying: "When he first walked in, he was the only person that I knew what they looked like before coming into the show. "I was 'Oh that's the Chris guy'. Initially the first thing that I took in about him was he was a good hugger. I liked his hug. That felt like a nice embrace. And he smelt good." And now JoJo admits she is thinking long-term about a life with Chris, even wanting to make it permanent with a tattoo to commemorate their story. She said: "I want Chris to last for a lifetime," adding: "The Chris tattoo, I said in Big Brother that I would get this bamboo stick... and I want to get two other tattoos from the Big Brother house of memories that I have from in there."

'I went to Benidorm on holiday and couldn't believe cost of a pint'

A man, who is known as the Benidorm Fanatic to his TikTok followers, recently headed to the popular holiday destination and was left gobsmacked by the price of a drink A Brit was gobsmacked by the cost of a pint in Benidorm, despite being a frequent visitor to Spain. Known amongst his TikTok followers as the Benidorm Fanatic, he recounts his visit to Uncle Ron's, a bar renowned for its affordably priced pints, where he found himself pleasantly surprised by just how much bang he got for his buck. In his popular video, he raves: "I tell you what, I believe it's actually a very, very nice pint as well, so it comes to the equivalent of about 84p in British money. Let's go and try it out, shall we? Let's give it a try." ‌ Upon reaching the bar, he continued: "So there you go, I'll give you a euro, a €1 pint, and I'll take that. Let's try this €1 pint. Look at that - a nice, clean, cold pint. It's got a nice, good head on it - let's try it." ‌ He enthusiastically shared his verdict, saying: "That is actually one of the best pints I've had in one of the popular bars. That is actually one of the best pints I've had in Benidorm to be honest with you. €1, I'll drink them all day." The video quickly gained traction, prompting viewers to share their impressions and even their own tales of Benidorm adventures. Among the comments, one user exclaimed: "Wow," while another who'd been there on holiday exclaimed: "I was there last week." Someone else who'd be there said: "Lovely pint. Had many." Whil a fellow TikToker simply added: "Bargain." Uncle Ron's, a hit with British holidaymakers in Benidorm, is famed for its budget-friendly tipples and hearty meals. ‌ TripAdvisor reviews boast of the establishment's offerings from breakfast through to dinner, with an average rating of 3.8 out of 5 on the platform, suggesting it's a must-visit for those seeking a decent meal and drinks while away. In the review section, one visitor commented: "Had a fantastic breakfast at Ron's today. Lovely English produce. Great service. Brilliant staff. "A massive group came in, but they were serviced promptly. Don't know how they manage with so few staff." ‌ Another shared their experience: "Last day we visited for some lunch before heading to airport. Left full, which is always a good thing. In all my times of going here, never left unhappy at the service nor the food - always really good." A third reviewer added: "We went many times during our two-week holiday. The staff are friendly and extremely hard working day and night. "Cheapest drinks you will find in town and food to suit everyone (daily deal only 6 euros). It's not a stylish 5* restaurant but then you wouldn't expect it. "For drinks just go to the bar like a normal bar. Always busy Sunday and Friday, so expect to book if you want a Sunday lunch. Would we go again? Certainly would!"
