Lesley Garrett cast in Northern Ireland Opera's Follies after cancer surgery
The British soprano said on ITV's This Morning earlier this month that she had cancer surgery after being diagnosed with thymoma, a rare cancer of the thymus gland, which could have affected her singing.
Since the surgery to remove the tumour, she has made a successful recovery and will now be joining the Follies cast.
Garrett said: 'I'm so excited to be coming back to Belfast and especially to be making my debut with Northern Ireland Opera at the age of 70.
'Sondheim's Follies is a masterpiece and I'm delighted to have been given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform the iconic role of Heidi Schiller.'
The production marks the singer's 45th anniversary in the industry and her debut with the Northern Ireland Opera, where she will play the 'opera diva' of the Weismann's Follies.
Set in 1971, the musical follows the group as they return to their former Broadway stage at Weisman Theatre, for a final reunion show before its scheduled demolition.
Jazz singer Jacqueline Dankworth, who was in the original cast of the West End debut for Sondheim's Into The Woods in 1990, will join the cast as Carlotta Campion.
West End stars Anna-Jane Casey and Annette McLaughlin will play former room mates Sally Plummer and Phyllis Stone.
The production is directed by Cameron Menzies, with Greg Arrowsmith as the musical director.
The musical scored seven Tony awards at the 1972 ceremony and is best known for its songs Broadway Baby, I'm Still Here and Losing My Mind.
Follies will run from September 13-20.

Before Love, Freddie is published next month, B has spoken about her late dad for the first time. She confessed to MailOnline: 'I didn't want to share my dad with the whole world. After his death, I had to learn to live with the attacks against him, the misrepresentations of him, and with the feeling that my Dad now belonged to everyone. 'I cried and mourned my Dad, while fans all around the world mourned Freddie. When you are 15 years old it's not easy." The book will feature excerpts from Freddie's private journals and notebooks that B personally handed to Lesley-Ann. According to B, this will be the first and only time that Freddie's true life story will have been told by his own flesh and blood. Lesley-Ann learned about the personal documents when B tracked her down and contacted her. The two women developed a friendship over several years, which culminated in B granting Lesley-Ann permission to share the contents of the journals, as well as her own memories of Freddie in the biography. The British author has revealed that being raised by her step-dad, B knew from toddler age that Freddie was her father. In her family home, the singer even had a room in their house, in order to spend as much quality time with her as possible. While the legend was on tour around the world with his band Queen or penning new tracks in the recording studio, Freddie made sure he would call B everyday. As well as the book, Channel 5 have also commissioned Freddie Mercury: A Secret Daughter, which will air as a 90-minute special and coincide with the book's release. The feature will explore the 'warm and loving relationship' the Bohemian Rhapsody singer had with his alleged secret daughter, as well as delve into his early childhood in Zanzibar and incredible life as a rock star. Freddie died at the age of 45 back in 1991, with his cause of death being from bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDS.

The handover between BBC Breakfast host Naga Munchetty and Saturday Kitchen star Matt Tebbutt took an awkward turn. Each Saturday, Matt's beloved cook show follows the morning news, where Naga and her co-host Charlie bring all of the latest updates across the nation. Before BBC Breakfast concludes for the day, viewers are taken over to Matt and his team, live in their studio for a sneak-preview of what is yet to come on his beloved programme. On today's show, Matt found himself eating his words after he'd introduced all of his guests who would feature as part of the line-up, including a visit from British actress and author Celia Imrie, who is best known for her role in the Bridget Jones films series, Calendar Girls and Nanny McPhee, to name a few. Matt had also been joined on the programme by Canadian extraordinaire Carmen O'Neal who is famed for her expertise when it comes to cocktail making. She had joined the panel, rustling up some alcoholic surprises for the entire team, including her famed drink of the summer "white port with tonic". As the Saturday Kitchen star finished introductions, his attention turned to Carmen who was dressed to impressed, wearing a fabulous red frock and matching lipstick for the occasion. He commented: "Nice, really showing me up on the wardrobe front as well." Without a moment's thought, the cocktail and spirits expert hilariously put Matt in his place, telling him: "I usually do," as everyone in the studio burst into laughter and applauded her quick-witted clap back. Realising he had nothing better to comment, Matt admitted: "I walked into that one," as he attempted to get the show back on track and returning once again to Naga and Charlie in the BBC Breakfast studio. Looking rather red faced but with a smile, he said: "Ok there you go, we'll see you at 10am." Naga of course, was not about to let him off the hook that easily. Getting in on the action, she playfully jibed: "At least it's coming from that end of the studio this time." As Matt began to chuckle while telling her: "Yeah it's usually you." Shutting down the roar of giggles that swarmed across both BBC sets, Naga hit back: "You look lovely but yes, she definitely looks better."
