Lawyers for Belfast-born businessman cite example of World Cup workers in Qatar pay dispute

Belfast-born tycoon is using America's Rico Act to bring a case against the Qatari royals who, he says, owe him millions, writes Sean Pollock
Paddy McKillen's lawyers have accused members of the Qatari royal family of exploiting his services in a luxury hotel empire expansion, citing 'striking similarities' to other practices by the Qataris, including claims that migrant construction workers were not paid during the World Cup.
The court complaint filed by McKillen's lawyers in the Central District of California was put forward under America's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (Rico) Act. Under this kind of case, McKillen's legal team must establish a pattern of alleged racketeering activity, meaning they must provide previous examples they claim show such actions – such as allegations that companies linked to the Qataris failed to pay workers in the past.

Reijnders to play for City at Club World Cup despite announcement after deadline

The Dutch international midfielder says he's "ecstatic" after completing his switch to the Premier League, and he will be in City's squad for the Club World Cup in the USA Manchester City have completed the signing of Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan for an initial fee of £46.6million. The arrival of Reijnders takes City's summer spending to £108.6m, following on from the signings of Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves for £31m and Rayan Cherki from Lyon for £31m, as well as goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli for a nominal fee. ‌ Netherlands midfielder Reijnders has signed a five-year deal and is eligible to play for City in the FIFA Club World Cup in the US, which starts on Sunday. ‌ The transfer was sealed before Tuesday's 7pm Club World Cup transfer deadline, with the announcement held up because of Reijnders' involvement in the Dutch squad which beat Malta 8-0 in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday. City's swift work in the summer transfer market comes after chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak admitted the club were not 'aggressive enough' in the same window last year. That failure, coupled with the loss of Ballon d'Or winner Rodri for almost the entire season to injury, saw City relinquish the Premier League title to Liverpool after winning it for a record four times in a row. Although the first transfer window shut at 7pm on Tuesday, City completed the deal for Reijnders before then, meaning he is now their player and can join Pep Guardiola's squad, which heads to the US later this week. City were determined to get the bulk of their signings completed before they head off to the US and have been the most pro-active Premier League club in the window so far, on top of the £200m they spent on new arrivals in January. ‌ Reijnders said: "I am ecstatic to be signing for Manchester City. City are one of the biggest teams in the world, with the best coach, world-class players and outstanding facilities. "Under Pep Guardiola, City have won so many titles and I want to help keep that going with a lot more success in the coming years. ‌ "It is also a dream come true to play in the Premier League. This league has seen many of the best Dutch players perform through the years and it's an inspiration to follow in their footsteps. "I am really looking forward to getting going, meeting the other players and showing the Manchester City fans what I can do.' Director of Football Hugo Viana added: "He arrives here with extensive top level experience in Europe, both at club level as well as on the international stage with the Netherlands. "Tijjani adds extra energy, composure and creativity to our midfield and working with Pep and our coaches will only see him go from strength to strength.'

URC considers shock US expansion as it waits on WRU decision over cutting teams

URC considers shock US expansion as it waits on WRU decision over cutting teams The URC is considering further expansion The United Rugby Championship could look very different in the future (Image: Huw Evans Picture Agency Ltd ) The United Rugby Championship is considering expanding into the US, with Chicago and Miami potential destinations for two new franchises, WalesOnline has learnt. There is a big push to improve rugby in the US given the fact they are hosting the World Cup in 2031, and the URC could include two American sides in the future. The URC is no stranger to expansion having initially started as a Celtic league before inviting Italian and South African teams into the competition. ‌ Georgian outfit Black Lion have also been in negotiations with the URC but the US route is being seriously considered. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. ‌ Were the URC to allow two US sides into the competition there would have to be a significant financial uplift to its current shareholders, while the cost of travel and player welfare would also have to be taken into consideration. News of the US interest comes as the URC are engaged in ongoing talks with the WRU over how many Welsh teams will participate in the competition going forward. The union is strongly considering cutting down to three or even two professional clubs after serving notice on the current status quo of four equally funded sides. If the WRU does decide to cut teams, a potential expansion into the US could be more attractive to the current URC shareholders. Join WalesOnline Rugby's WhatsApp Channel here to get the breaking news sent straight to your phone for free Article continues below While the quality of the sides competing in the URC cannot be questioned it is often criticised for its excessive travelling, especially since the introduction of teams from South Africa. There is already a professional league in the US called Major League Rugby which was only founded in 2017 with 11 teams in total but it is nowhere near the level required if the US are to compete with tier one nations. 'As the URC, we have always had expansion in DNA," said URC CEO Martin Anayi in a press conference last week. ‌ "We have been the Celtic League, and we moved, and we have tried to grow each time. And we have done that. "I think we have genuinely made it a better league. 'I think it is important that we continue to look outwards. But also, the bar is very high because, for every game you add, there is a player welfare issue to engage with. ‌ 'And that is something you have to make sure you aren't compromising. "You have logistics, especially when we are transcontinental, and then you have the sporting element, and we want it to be as competitive as ever. 'So I would never say never, but I think the bar is very high to do that. ‌ "We play less rugby with the URC model and format. We don't have home and away games in every match. "We have almost 320 internationals playing in the league, which is almost double what you have in the Premiership or Super Rugby.
