Kuki Students Ask Manipur Governor To Open State Civil Service Exam Centre In Churachandpur
State civil service aspirants in Manipur's Churachandpur district have requested Governor AK Bhalla to hold the Manipur Public Service Commission (MPSC) mains exam in the southern hill district too, considering the situation in the state where members of the Meitei community and the Kuki tribes are unable to visit each other's areas with safety guarantees.
An MPSC notification on July 11 said the mains exam will be held in two centres - state capital Imphal, and Guwahati in neighbouring Assam.
"...However, this arrangement imposes undue physical, psychological, and financial hardship on aspirants from the Kuki community. So, we earnestly request your kind intervention to facilitate the conduct of the mains examination in Churachandpur district," the Kuki Students Organisation (KSO) said in a letter to Mr Bhalla.
The KSO said holding the exam in Churachandpur will ensure inclusivity and equal opportunity for all aspirants, while also addressing the logistical and psychological challenges posed by long-distance travel.
Several national-level exams such as UGC-NET, NEET, Agniveer, SSC, and banking services have been "successfully and smoothly conducted in Churachandpur in recent times", the KSO said, adding they are confident the state-level MPSC exams can also be conducted in the district efficiently in the same conducive environment.
"Your timely and compassionate intervention will not only ensure fairness and justice for all aspirants but will also go a long way in restoring trust in the democratic institutions of the state. It will reaffirm the commitment that no deserving youth is left behind due to circumstances beyond their control," the KSO said.
The Kuki tribes have refrained from going toward the valley area where the airport is located, citing security concerns. The better paved National Highway also passes through the valley to the east in central Manipur and goes toward Nagaland and Assam.
To get out of Churachandpur, the Kuki tribes have been taking National Highway 102B - known for its bad patches and large potholes - that goes to Mizoram's capital Aizawl to the west. Aizawl has an airport.
Members of the Meitei community can only take flights out of Imphal as all the highways pass through Kuki settlements. The Kuki tribes say they will not allow Meiteis to pass through their areas until their demand for a separate administration is met.
A civil service aspirant in Churachandpur told NDTV it would be helpful if the MPSC mains exam can also be held in her district. Going to Guwahati will take a minimum of three days, and not every candidate has barely enough to survive, let alone travel, she said.
"If the exam centre is in Guwahati, we have to be ready more than a week in advance to prepare for travel. We will waste many days on the road. It will be physically and financially draining," the civil service aspirant said, requesting anonymity.

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP has launched a sharp attack on actor-politician Kamal Haasan, demanding an unconditional apology for his remarks on Sanatana Dharma. At an event marking 15 years of actor Suriya's Agaram Foundation on Sunday, Mr Haasan had said that only education can crush the chains of dictatorship and Sanatana. BJP spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy hit out strongly at the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief. "Money and power have corrupted Kamal Haasan. He has forgotten his family's Sanatana roots. Mr Haasan's comments came in the context of his criticism of the NEET exam, which he said had denied education - especially medical education - to many deserving students from poor and rural backgrounds in Tamil Nadu. "Since 2017, this law has denied education to so many children. Even Agaram Foundation can't do anything about it. Only education can give the strength to change the law... Education is the only weapon that can crush the chains of dictatorship and Sanatan. Don't take anything else in your hands - majoritarian idiots will defeat you," said Mr Haasan. Political parties in Tamil Nadu, including BJP's ally AIADMK, oppose NEET arguing it favours affluent students who can afford private coaching and denies opportunity for top-scoring poor students particularly those from rural areas who can't afford this, nor may have coaching centres. For almost a decade, the state has abolished any form of entrance tests and had made medical admission on the basis of class XII exams. In Tamil Nadu Sanatana Dharma is seen as discrimination on the basis of caste, including untouchability for ages, denying oppressed communities education and other opportunities. Kamal Haasan's remarks drew parallels to the 2023 controversy involving Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, who had equated Sanatana Dharma with regressive caste discrimination and said it should be eradicated like mosquitoes that cause dengue and malaria. Multiple FIRs were filed then, though the Supreme Court later stayed further action. During the UPA regime President Kalam had given assent to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET, something now BJP wouldn't do. The saffron party however, maintains that NEET ensures transparency, meritocracy, and prevents the auctioning of medical seats.

Nainar hails EPS as TN people's hope as they share stage
Tirunelveli: Braving heavy rain, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami and BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran shared the stage in Tirunelveli on Monday evening as part of the former's Makkalai Kappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom campaign. A huge throng of people watched on as EPS, drenched in rain, said the downpour was nothing compared to the flood of people that will defeat DMK and secure victory for the AIADMK-led alliance in the assembly election. The two lambasted the DMK for 'deteriorating law and order' and 'burdening the common man.' Nagenthran, also the Tirunelveli MLA, had hosted EPS at his house for dinner and a consultative meeting on Sunday with senior leaders from BJP and AIADMK. "To be freed from DMK, the state needs good governance, and people place their hopes on EPS. To quote Puratchi Thalaivar MGR, voting right is integral for people to choose their govt, and the govt should be of not only skilled people but of good people," Nagentharan said. "AIADMK will always fulfil the needs of the people. Various welfare schemes brought by AIADMK were stopped by DMK without justification, and people are burdened with increased taxes and affected by inflation. Chief minister M K Stalin has lost the support of cadres and members. That is why DMK is knocking on the doors of people and begging them to join the party," he added. EPS said DMK continues to cheat the people of Tamil Nadu by promising NEET exemption though the exam was launched during Congress rule when DMK was in alliance. Earlier in the day, EPS held a meeting with representatives and associations of construction workers, farmers, consumer products distributors, and merchants in Tirunelveli. EPS assured farmers that full prices will be ensured for direct procurement of paddy. Subsidies for farmers up to 40-50%, especially women, will be resumed. AIADMK will continue to stand with construction workers and other labourers and small businesses, just as it supported them during the Covid-19 pandemic, EPS added.

Manipur violence case: SC questions delay in fresh Forensic Science Laboratory report on Biren Singh tapes
