Hear Ye, Hear Ye! Town criers to compete in Gananoque
The picturesque riverside town will come alive Saturday and Sunday as criers from across Ontario descend on Gananoque to vie for top honours in a celebration of heritage, humour, and heraldry.
Hosted by local councillor and Town Crier Brian Mabee, the event promises bold costumes, theatrical cries, and family-friendly fun throughout the weekend.
The championships will feature three competitive cries, judged by rotating panels of five to six adjudicators each round.
Saturday's events include a 'Hometown Cry' at Town Hall at 10 a.m. and a researched cry focused on Gananoque and the Thousand Islands at the Bandshell at 1:30 p.m. Sunday wraps up with a humorous cry at 11 a.m. exploring what it means to be a Town Crier, followed by awards at 1 p.m.
Criers, once considered the 'newspapers of the day,' were responsible for sharing news and proclamations before literacy was widespread.
Originating as far back as the 14th and 15th centuries, these official messengers relayed royal decrees, public notices, and local news to gathered townsfolk, usually punctuated with the unmistakable 'Oyez! Oyez! Oyez!' to demand attention.
While the weather forecast calls for possible showers, Mabee, who also serves on the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands council, assured that the show will go on.
'Well, Mother Nature is showing that she controls the weather,' he said. 'We have a weather location that we will notify all if we need to use it. The Royal Theatre has provided use of their grand facility if we require it.'
Events will take place at Gananoque Town Park, with community activities, games, and photo ops throughout the weekend. Admission is free, and everyone is welcome to witness the spirited echoes of history, one cry at a time.

Me being one.' 6 Jamie Lee Curtis speaks during SiriusXM's Town Hall with the cast of 'Freakier Friday' on July 28. ''Freakier' functions mostly as a nostalgia trip for 30-something ticket-buyers who can now legally enjoy a margarita,' Oleksinski wrote. 'But while massaging millennials, the movie also has a good time slinging mud at Gen Z.' During a recent interview with ABC 7, Curtis explained how she played a big part in getting the sequel made. 6 Jamie Lee Curtis attends the 'Freakier Friday' premiere in Australia on August 5. Brandon Voight / BACKGRID 'I kept saying, 'Well, you know what? We can't make a sequel until Lindsay's old enough to have a teenager,'' the actress said. 'They went, 'Jamie, she's 35.' I was like, 'She's not 35!' They were like, 'She's 35.' And I was like, 'Oh, sure! She could've had a baby at 20! Bob Iger!'' 'So when I got home, I called Bob and we talked about it, and now we're here,' she added.

Portage Youth Hub August calendar full of fun, free summer activities and cultural connections
From painting windows to martial arts and powwow outings, Portage's Youth Hub is rolling out a new month of free summer programming designed to engage, inspire, and support local youth. Jacinda Houle, Cultural Support Navigator at the Youth Hub, says the centre's August calendar of activities includes a mix of creative, cultural, and physical programming, all accessible to youth ages 12-29 at no cost. 'We try to eliminate as many barriers as possible,' said Houle. 'All the events are free, we provide food, and we can even help with transportation.' Among the highlights is the return of Rene Harder, a former practicum student who now joins the Youth Hub full-time as a youth mentor. Harder's first event is a collaborative window-painting session at the Youth Hub. 'We're really excited to have Rene back,' said Houle. 'They're incredibly creative and bring so many great ideas for engaging youth.' The centre is also offering a series of Muay Thai martial arts sessions with instructor James Donald. While turnout has been modest so far, Houle is hopeful the program will gain momentum. Lessons are held at Red River College. 'It's something really different and empowering for youth,' she said. 'We just want to get the word out and encourage more to come try it out.' In addition to on-site programs, the Youth Hub also teams up with the Family Resource Centre to offer Parents' Time: Culture and Connection on August 7. The program features cultural workshops such as beading or leatherwork while childcare is provided for participants. 'It's a great opportunity for parents who want to connect to their culture while knowing their kids are being cared for,' Houle said. Rounding out this week's programming is a Saturday trip to the Long Plain First Nation Powwow, running from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Youth Hub will transport up to five youth to the event by van, and advance sign-up is required. 'It's always a really special experience,' said Houle. 'We'll spend a few hours there and let youth take it all in.' To register or learn more about upcoming events, youth and families can contact the Youth Hub directly. UPDATE: Out of control wildfire near Cameron Lake, Highway 4 remains open
By Nora O'Malley Local Journalism Initiative Reporter Highway 4, BC – BC Wildfire crews are hitting the Wesley Ridge blaze near Cameron Lake hard with multiple aircrafts to cool and contain the out-of-control wildfire that was discovered on Thursday morning, July 31. Wildfire smoke is wafting through Port Alberni as residents in the impacted area on the north side of Cameron Lake have been ordered to evacuate immediately by the Regional District of Nanaimo . On a scale of one to six, BC Wildfire ranked Wesley Ridge Fire Number V71145 as a two with pockets of three, stating that it is a 'low vigorous, ground service fire with open flame visible'. 'We are fortunate to have low winds at this time,' said Coastal Fire Centre Information Officer Kimberly Kelly in a midday July 31 media update. 'The weather forecast is not seeing a significant increase in wind activity or a change in direction so we're not expecting the wind to be a factor at this time. Just understand when we forecast our weather it's a prediction, not a promise,' she continued. The size of the wildfire is 40-hectares as of 1:14 p.m., July 31. That is double the size BC Wildfire first reported. Wesley Ridge is located about four kilometres east of Cathedral Grove on the opposite side of Cameron Lake from Highway 4, the main road connecting the West Coast and Port Alberni to the east side of the Vancouver Island. Highway 4 currently remains open in both directions as crews tackle the fire. 'There is no threat at this time. However, this is a dynamic situation,' said Kelly. BC Wildfire reported that the blaze was first detected after midnight and is 'burning aggressively and is in difficult to access terrain.' Kelly says the terrain in the area is steep and will give ground crews some challenges in terms of accessibility. Coombs and Dashwood fire departments are engaged, according to BC Wildifre. In collaboration with local government, the wildfire officials are recommending evac orders and alerts based on ease of access for crews and structural protection equipment as well as egress for public. 'Travelers on highway 4 please be mindful - crews and aircraft are working in the area, proceed with caution and stay focused on the road and don't stop the flow of traffic,' states BC Wildfire. Drive BC re-iterates. 'Watch for fire crews working in the area, as well as possible reduced visibility due to smoke. Highway is open,' states Drive BC in a July 31 update. BC Wildfire suspects the blaze was caused by humans, either intentionally or by accident. In June 2023, a wildfire at Cameron Bluffs closed Highway 4 for almost three weeks, with delays affecting the route for most of the summer. With August Long Weekend upon us, Kelly urged the public to recreate responsibly to prevent wildfires. She said 95 per cent of 2025 wildfires within the Coastal Fire region are suspected to be caused by people. To report smoke or fires, call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 or through the BCWS mobile app on your smart device.
