Lowe's employee reported coworker to HR before deadly PA shooting, sister says

Miami Herald18-06-2025
A Lowe's employee was shot three times, including twice in the head, during the culmination of an ongoing feud with a coworker, Pennsylvania authorities say.
Christopher Wasnetsky, 36, has now been charged with murder following the June 14 fatal shooting at a Lowe's store, according to the Scranton Police Department.
He reportedly said the victim in the shooting, Jeffrey Moeller, was harassing him for months before he was accused of shooting him. Moeller's sister, however, refutes his claim.
Christina Moeller said her brother had reported Wasnetsky to the Lowe's human resources office multiple times 'due to ongoing concerns.' 'To our knowledge, the individual had been making troubling comments directed at Jeffrey,' she said in a GoFundMe. 'Despite Jeffrey's repeated reports, nothing was done.'
Wasnetsky is accused of shooting Moeller in an unprovoked attack as the victim operated machinery, according to a criminal complaint obtained by The Times-Tribune.
Police said Moeller asked for help when he fell to the ground, so Wasnetsky shot him two more times 'so he wouldn't suffer,' WVIA reported.
Moeller was shot once in his back and twice in the head, according to a coroner's report obtained by WNEP.
'There was no altercation. No argument. Jeffrey was simply doing his job — the job he loved — and his life was stolen from him,' the victim's sister said in the GoFundMe.
Wasnetsky turned himself in after he called 911 to report the shooting, according to WNEP.
'I'd like to report a shooting at Dickson City Lowe's,' he said during his 911 call, the news outlet reported. 'I was the person that did it.'
Police said Moeller, who was found 'in a large pool of blood,' was pronounced dead in a hospital, according to WOLF.
Wasnetsky told officers he had filed complaints of harassment against Moeller, but those claims were unfounded, according to the news outlet.
Originally charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault, Wasnetsky now faces upgraded charges of first- and third-degree murder, police said. He was jailed in Lackawanna County without bail.
Moeller was a father to three daughters, according to his sister, who called him a 'devoted' dad.
'Once they were all in school, he took on night shifts at Lowe's so he could still be present with his girls during the day,' his sister said on GoFundMe. 'That's just the kind of man he was — loyal, dedicated, and full of love for his family.'
Scranton is about a 125-mile drive northwest from Philadelphia.

15-year-old student athlete ID'd as victim of gang-related stabbing in Costa Mesa

Authorities have identified a victim of a fatal stabbing in Costa Mesa Saturday as a 15-year-old Newport-Mesa Unified student whom social media reports describe as an up-and-coming soccer player killed in an incident being investigated as a gang-related attack. Allison Castillo — a student athlete who was recently invited to play soccer in Spain — was identified by the county coroner's office Monday as the teenager found collapsed in an outside courtyard on the 700 block of Shalimar Drive by police. First responders were contacted Saturday at 12:30 p.m. regarding a stabbing and arrived to find the teen suffering from a life-threatening wound, according to a Costa Mesa Police Department release issued Sunday. Officers and paramedics performed CPR at the scene and eventually transported the victim to a nearby hospital, where she died of her injuries a few hours later, the release stated. Although CMPD spokeswoman Roxi Fyad declined to release Castillo's identity to the public, Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Gerard McCann confirmed Monday coroner officials had identified the victim as Castillo, a resident of Costa Mesa. During their investigation of the incident, police detectives determined the stabbing may have involved a suspect with known gang ties, at which point investigators from CMPD's Gang Unit were called to the scene. 'The suspect was known to law enforcement as a known participant in illegal criminal gang activity,' Fyad said Monday. That individual — Matthew Juarez, 31, of Anaheim — was quickly traced to a residence in the city of Anaheim, where he was detained without incident. Juarez was booked into the county's intake release center on Sunday and is awaiting charges from the district attorney's office. Newport-Mesa Unified School District officials acknowledged Castillo was a student of the district, although a spokesperson did not indicate which school the student attended. 'She was a student in our district, and we are saddened by her passing,' the spokesperson said in a statement to media, declining to share further out of respect for the victim's family. 'Counseling and support services are available for our school community.' Castillo reportedly played soccer for two years with So Cal Select, an independent scouting program that prepares young athletes to play in college- and professional-level international tournaments, according to the organization's Instagram page. An online GoFundMe account established on behalf of Castillo's family recalled the youth as 'the life of the party, always bringing joy, laughter and warmth to everyone around her.' 'Her kindness, her ability to inspire, and her loving nature changed lives,' the page read. 'She was a kind soul who didn't deserve what happened to her. We demand justice for Allison, and we will not stop until those responsible are held accountable.' Costa Mesa police detectives are asking anyone who may have information about Saturday's incident to contact Det. Eloisa Peralta at (714) 754-5039 or Investigator Eric Molina at (714) 754-5694.

Parents of Bad Bunny fan killed in Puerto Rico seek answers: ‘We want justice'

New York City native Kevin Mares was killed Sunday in the La Perla neigborhood of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The 25-year-old was visiting the island to see a Bad Bunny concert. Mares was fatally shot in the early morning hours, outside of a nightclub called Shelter for Mistreated Men. The shooting took place when several people near Mares began arguing and one pulled out a gun and shot at least three people, the Associated Press reported. Homicide detective Sgt. Arnaldo Ruiz told the AP that Mares was an innocent bystander in the situation and that a pair of siblings from La Perla remain hospitalized after being shot. No arrests have yet been made. Mares was joined by his girlfriend and two friends in Puerto Rico. It was his partner who ended up delivering the news of his death to Mares' parents. 'I said, 'What happened?' She said, 'I'm sorry. We lost him,' ' Hector Mares, Kevin's father, told CBS News New York. 'Whoever did this, took from us a piece of us, you know?' Kevin's mother, Sandra Mares, added. A longtime Bad Bunny fan, Mares and his friends were consistently in attendance of the 'La Mudanza' singer's concerts and had been prepping for their San Juan trip for months. 'Every time Bad Bunny comes here, they go to most all of his concerts,' Sandra Mares said. Mares — whose parents are originally from Mexico — was born and raised in the East Elmhurst neighborhood of Queens and was studying to be a veterinarian at LaGuardia Community College. 'He got a lot of dreams. He was working as a vet technician. And at the same time he was studying,' his father told ABC 7 New York. 'He was about to propose to [his girlfriend] this fall. Yeah. He wanted to do something special. He shared that with us,' his mother added. 'He was a lovely son. He cared about all of us, his family, friends. He has a lot of friends who's really going to miss him, too.' Now, the Mares family is asking for anyone with information about the shooter and more specifics about the incident to please step forward. 'What we're asking the people is, if anybody knows what happened, who did this, [to say something],' his mother told CBS. 'We don't know [anything]. We want justice.' The family is currently making efforts toward having Mares' body returned home, but it remains in Puerto Rico as the investigation into his death is still ongoing. Kevin's father started a GoFundMe to raise enough money — the campaign's target is currently $50,000 — to plan Kevin's funeral arrangements. 'Kevin Mares was a deeply loved son, devoted friend, and a source of inspiration to everyone who knew him. His wholehearted kindness, adventurous spirit, and unwavering commitment to family made him a pillar of strength for his loved ones,' the GofundMe page states. 'Family was at the center of everything he did, and his sudden passing has left an unfillable void in our lives. ... Your support will help us honor Kevin's memory and give him the farewell he deserves.'

Stray bullet kills N.Y. man in Puerto Rico for Bad Bunny concert

Aug. 11 (UPI) -- A 25-year-old New York man shot and killed in Puerto Rico while attending a Bad Bunny concert. Queens resident Kevin Mares was fatally shot Sunday night at a San Juan nightclub in the La Perla neighborhood of the commonwealth U.S. island's capital city a little after 4 a.m. local time, according to police. Officials said the East Elmhurst man was an innocent bystander when gunfire erupted. A 46-year-old local man and his sister, 45, were both injured but survived. The incident took place at the nightclub Refugio de Hombres Maltratados in the La Perla neighborhood, an area known for crime in the coastal town. Investigators said an argument broke out and a person pulled out a gun and started shooting. "They were standing in the wrong place at the wrong time," Claudia Saenz, a family friend, told the Daily News. Meanwhile, no arrests have been made and no suspects named. Local police, according to Det. Arnaldo Ruiz, were working with "very little" information about the incident. In a statement posted to social media, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said he was heartbroken that his life was "tragically ripped away due to gun violence in Puerto Rico." "Condolences and prayers are with all of Kevin's loved ones grieving this unimaginable loss," stated the embattled Democrat-turned-Independent mayor currently up for re-election in a hotly contested mayoral race. According to witnesses in recorded reports, Mares attended Saturday night's Bad Bunny concert in San Juan with his girlfriend and friends. According to Mare's mother, he was planning to propose marriage in the fall to his girlfriend of seven years. The family, meanwhile, is working with Puerto Rican authorities to return Mare's remains part of an active investigation in America's island territory, which is reportedly estimated to cost the grieving family at least $23,000 with a GoFundMe page setup to aid in the process.
