4th Test: Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar Tons Guide India To Sensational Draw Against England
A draw looked anything but likely when India collapsed to 0-2 in the opening over of their second innings on Saturday as Chris Woakes struck with successive deliveries after England had piled up a mammoth 669 in their first innings.
But Gill, in on a hat-trick, went on to score 103 in a marathon innings of some seven hours as he turned the tide during a stand of 188 with KL Rahul that ended before lunch on Sunday's last day.
Jadeja, reprieved first ball when Joe Root dropped a tough slip chance, went on to make 107 not out, his first century of the series following four fifties, with fellow spin-bowling all-rounder Sundar unbeaten on 101 -- his maiden Test hundred.
India have now scored 11 individual hundreds this series, the most by any visiting side in England, and such was their eventual dominance Sunday they had no need to worry about whether to send Rishabh Pant out to bat following the severe foot injury he suffered in the first innings.
Sundar and Jadeja's unbroken partnership of 203 on a largely docile pitch frustrated a toiling and increasingly fractious England, despite the best efforts of inspirational captain Ben Stokes.
Personal triumph for Stokes
This match was a personal triumph for Stokes as he became just the fourth England cricketer to score a hundred and take five wickets in the same Test, his 141 on Saturday following a haul of 5-72 in India's first-innings 358.
But it appeared to come at some cost with Stokes, who suffered from cramp while batting, not bowling at all on Saturday and repeatedly clutching the top of his leg.
And his efforts to defy history by winning the toss and bowling proved unsuccessful.
No team winning the toss and bowling first has ever won a Test at Old Trafford and this match was only the second draw of Stokes' reign following a rain-affected Ashes clash at the Manchester ground two years ago.
India resumed on 174-2 with KL Rahul 87 not out and Gill 78 not out
Stokes, already the leading bowler on either side this series with 16 wickets at 24.75, brought himself on at the start of Sunday's play and almost had Gill caught for 81 by a leaping Ollie Pope at short cover.
But Stokes did have obdurate opener Rahul, in sight of his third century of the series, plumb lbw for 90 to a nip-back ball that kept a touch low.
Stokes bowled an unchanged spell of 1-12 in eight overs until Woakes took the ball -- although that did not stop Gill completing a 228-ball century.
Gill was out in surprisingly careless fashion when caught behind flicking at a Jofra Archer ball outside off stump to end a marathon innings of some seven hours, with India now 222-4.
The 25-year-old Gill, in his first campaign as captain, has now scored 722 runs this series -- a record for an India batsman in a series against England, surpassing team-mate Yashasvi Jaiswal's 712 in 2023/34
Sundar and Jadeja, after his first ball reprieve, were largely untroubled.
And even when Stokes put himself through the pain barrier again, Sundar pulled the England skipper for a six and a four off successive balls to complete a 117-ball fifty.
Sunday's closing stages simply became a question of whether either Sundar or Jadeja would reach a hundred after Gill declined to take a draw immediately at the start of the last hour.
The match ended in slightly farcical circumstances when batsman Harry Brook came on to bowl.
Jadeja smashed a woeful Brook delivery for six to complete a 182-ball century before Gill's two off the Yorkshireman took him to a 206-ball hundred.

Having achieved some incredible success—home and away—over the past decade, the Indian team was hit by the sudden retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin. Transitions are an inevitable part of sport, but when three big superstars bid adieu around the same time, especially after lifting a team to rarefied heights, it's an extremely challenging affair. It's what new captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir, who took charge from Rahul Dravid after the T20 World Cup a year ago, were tasked with — and to be fair, they've come out with flying colours. The biggest concern for the Indians before arriving here was on the batting front. Among the top order batters, only KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant had previous experience of playing a full series in England. Skipper Gill's form outside the subcontinent too was very average. Can this young crop deliver in a country where sound technique is of utmost importance? Yes, they did — with Gill leading from the front with a jaw-dropping 754 runs that included a career-best 269. Rahul scored 532 runs with two centuries and an equal number of half-centuries, his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal hit 411, starting and ending the series with a ton each, while vice-captain Pant was in elements, amassing 479 runs with two centuries and three fifties and earning a lot of praise for batting with a fractured foot. On the batting front, the find of the series was Washington Sundar. The Tamil Nadu off-spinning all-rounder scored a career-defining 101 not out to help India pull off a remarkable draw against all odds in the fourth Test in Manchester that ensured the series was still alive in the fifth. He was backed to the hilt by captain Gill, whose decision to play him instead of attacking spinner Kuldeep Yadav was pilloried by many critics — but Sundar repaid all that faith with performances on the field. No praise can be too high for Ravindra Jadeja, who yet again proved why he's the Most Valuable Player in the team still. One of the remnants of the old guard, the 36-year-old all-rounder brought his A-game in exceptional fashion, amassing 516 runs with one century and five half-centuries, playing several game-changing knocks. On the bowling front too, the southpaw didn't disappoint, bagging seven wickets. With regards to Gill's captaincy, the 25-year-old marshalled his resources incredibly well. He faced numerous challenges, especially in terms of fielding a settled bowling unit because of Jasprit Bumrah's 3-match availability 'clause', but he did a job with whatever he had. He made some bold calls in backing Sundar instead of Kuldeep because of the former's superior batting abilities and stood firm by his decision despite a lot of outside noise. There have been times when he has looked clueless and turned defensive when England batters were on the assault, but like he said, there are lessons to be learnt and he's willing to incorporate them in future assignments. On the bowling front, this tour has been Mohammed Siraj's. The Hyderabadi bowled with a lion's heart, sending down 185.3 overs with barely a dip in intensity. The spotlight was on Bumrah but Siraj deservedly stole the limelight with a mesmerising performance at The Oval. Prasidh Krishna and Akash Deep fared decently as understudies but it's the back-ups where India have a problem with. During Kohli's reign they had a wealth of resources on the fast bowling front — but suddenly the barrel appears a little dry. It's something that needs serious addressing if India are to continue dominating.

Shubman Gill to compete with Ben Stokes, Wiaan Mulder for ICC Player of the Month
India captain Shubman Gill was on Wednesday named among the three nominees for ICC's Player of the Month award for July along with South Africa's Wiaan Mulder and England skipper Ben Stokes. Gill led India remarkably in the recently-concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England as his young side emerged with a hard-fought 2-2 draw, a series in which the 25-year-old rewrote batting records. Gill scored 754 runs in the series against England with four centuries, including a double ton at 75.40 to break legendary Sunil Gavaskar's record (732) for the highest run tally for an Indian captain in a five-Test series. Gill's returns are now also the second-best behind Sir Donald Bradman (810 runs) in the all-time list for captains. 'Shubman Gill had a sensational month, amassing 567 runs at an impeccable average of 94.50 in three Tests during India's gripping series in England,' the ICC wrote on its website. 'He played a starring role in India's record-breaking win at Edgbaston, where he scored a monumental 269 in the first innings followed by 161 in the second. His combined 430 runs across the two innings is the second highest tally, next only to Graham Gooch's 456,' it added. The ICC said Gill carried the baton from 'all-time great' Virat Kohli at No.4. 'His consistency at No. 4, carrying on the baton from all-time great Virat Kohli, provided stability and flair in equal measure, and combined with his extraordinary captaincy in his debut series,' it said. In his maiden outing as South Africa captain, Mulder struck a mammoth 367 not out against Zimbabwe but declared his team's innings when he could have broken legendary Brian Lara's record for highest individual total of 400 not out against England in 2004. The ICC said, 'He scored 531 runs across the two matches at an astonishing average of 265.50, including a composed 147 in the second innings of the first Test.' 'However, his standout act came in the second Test at Bulawayo, where he smashed an unbeaten 367 in his maiden outing as South Africa's Test skipper — the highest individual score in South African Test history.' 'Mulder also chipped in with the ball, claiming seven wickets at just 15.28 apiece, including a four-wicket haul in the first Test,' it added. The ICC lauded Stokes for his all-round show against India saying, 'He scored 251 runs at an average of 50.20 and took 12 wickets at 26.33, delivering in high-pressure situations with both bat and ball.' ‘Shubman Gill was a huge positive for India in England': Sanjay Bangar on new Test captain in Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy
Shubman Gill's emergence in England as the deserving candidate for being India's next long-term Test captain and of a reliable performer at the top of the order is a huge positive for India, former batting coach Sanjay Bangar has said. The gruelling five-match Test series in England was Gill's first assignment as India's captain in the longest format. The series itself was epic with every game going into the fifth day and it all ended with India managing to draw it 2-2 with a win that looked improbable for much of the penultimate day. Gill himself was in record-breaking form throughout the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy scoring 754 runs runs at an average of 75.40 and with one double hundred and three hundreds under his belt in the series. It is the second highest tally of runs by a Test captain in a series, only behind Don Bradman's tally of 810 runs as Australian captain in The Ashes in 1936-1937. 'I think this was also the first instance when he was getting a full series in England and that helps as a batter,' said Bangar on ESPNCricinfo. 'If you have a great start at Headingley itself, then it sort of quite down all the nerves. Because India started so well, the number of batsmen who got runs in the very first Test match is extremely critical. Because you know scoring runs in England is very very valuable and if it comes right at the start of the series with 2 or 3 batsmen getting big scores means that the series is getting beautifully build up and that's where Shubman getting those big knocks in the first four innings of the series itself meant that entire questions marks about his captaincy affecting his batsmanship just vapourised out of thin air and he also became far far confident as a leader. 'Because if you look at his leadership in the first test match and right up to the day five of the last Test match, there was a huge improvement. So clearly Shubman Gill (as a captain) was a huge positive for the Indian team.' With a total of 430 runs scored in the Edgbaston Test alone Gill had posted the second-highest aggregate in a match, behind England batsman Graham Gooch's aggregate of 456 runs against India in 1990. His haul at Edgbaston Test was also the highest by an away batsman in a Test match in England. Gill finished the series with four hundreds in five Test matches and it also meant that he became the first batsman from Asia to score 700 runs in a Test series played in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries. When asked about the earlier doubts about Gill's captaincy prior to the series, Bangar was of the view that Gill will evolve with time. 'You think two things. Number one was basically about the combinations that he would have wanted to play. Now the thought process seems to be that they wanted batting depth all the time. And that is the theme that they persisted throughout out the series. So will he emulate that. I think only time will tell Only the second question mark comes: where can he use the spinners better? When can he use the spinners better? So there was a case where I believe on day four when Brook and Root were going very very strongly in pursuit of the chase, I think there was a place where spinners could have used for a slightly extended spell. I think usage of spin in overseas conditions , how smartly he can do that is going to be the thing wherein he will evolve, Overall in terms of his mannerism, how he dealt with the defeats and victories, I felt he seemed very very confident. He has shown those signs of improvement which one wants to see in a young leader,' shared Bangar. When asked about his batting form post the win at The Oval, Gill had shared how he sees his batting as 'very rewarding' in the series. 'Very rewarding, my aim was to be the best batter in this series and getting there is very satisfying. It's always a matter of sorting things out technically and mentally, they are correlated,' Gill had told Sky Sports.
