Sean ‘Diddy' Combs' lawyers seek unbiased jurors amid media frenzy before trial

Malay Mail28-04-2025
NEW YORK, April 28 — For the past year-and-a-half, allegations of sexual misconduct against rapper Sean 'Diddy' Combs have attracted widespread media attention, including several documentaries and podcasts, sullying the reputation of the mogul once known for his rags-to-riches life story and for elevating hip-hop in American culture.
On Monday, with his criminal trial on sex trafficking charges just weeks away, Combs' lawyers will start their search for jurors who have not yet made up their minds about the artist and entrepreneur once known as 'Puff Daddy.'
Hundreds of New York residents who have been summoned for jury duty will arrive at the federal courthouse in Lower Manhattan this week to fill out questionnaires asking them what they already know about the case. It is the first step toward seating a panel of 12 jurors and six alternates that will determine Combs' fate after a trial expected to last eight to 10 weeks.
While the judge and lawyers for both sides will know the jurors' names, their identities will not be disclosed to the public. Anonymous juries are not the default in the US criminal justice system, but they are frequently used in high-profile trials to protect jurors from potential harassment or threats.
Combs is accused of forcing women to take part in elaborate sex performances with male sex workers called 'freak-offs' over two decades. He has pleaded not guilty, and his lawyers have argued that the sex acts prosecutors described were consensual.
Combs has been in the public eye for decades and is known for founding Bad Boy Records, turning musical artists such as Notorious B.I.G. and Usher into stars, and living a lavish lifestyle befitting a celebrity whose net worth Forbes estimated at more than US$1 billion in 2022.
His downfall since he was indicted last September has been widely documented, including in several documentaries and podcasts such as the Max miniseries The Fall of Diddy and the Daily Mail's podcast The Trial of Diddy.
The media saturation could leave many prospective jurors with the impression that he is likely guilty, said Christina Marinakis, a jury consultant.
'As a defence side, you're really wanting to get jurors that have not heard anything about this case or know very, very little about it, so they come in with a truly blank slate,' said Marinakis, the CEO of Immersion Legal Jury.
Voir dire
After prospective jurors fill out questionnaires, defence lawyers and prosecutors will submit a list to US District Judge Arun Subramanian of those the two sides agree should move forward in the selection process, as well as who should be excused and those about whom they cannot agree. The judge may hold a hearing to resolve any disputes.
Starting May 5, Subramanian will question the remaining prospective jurors in person, a process known as voir dire designed to elicit signs of potential bias. Subramanian will dismiss those he finds would not be able to be fair and impartial. The prosecution and the defense will then be able to dismiss a limited number of jurors without articulating a reason, known as peremptory strikes.
The process is not foolproof. British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell unsuccessfully sought to have her sex trafficking conviction overturned after a juror who had checked 'no' when asked in a pretrial questionnaire whether he had been a victim of sexual abuse, said in media interviews after the trial that he had been sexually abused as a child.
Both the defence lawyers and the prosecutors are likely to review prospective jurors' social media accounts to see if they have expressed opinions about the case or on other matters that could indicate bias, Marinakis said.
Zachary Margulis-Ohnuma, a New York-based defence lawyer, said Combs' panel would likely consist ultimately of people without firm convictions about issues of consent and sexual abuse.
'One side or the other will figure out a way to get rid of the ones who do have strong opinions,' Margulis-Ohnuma said. — Reuters

Their courageous service laid the foundation for the eventual desegregation of the U.S. Armed Forces and helped transform the landscape of American civil rights. About the National Montford Point Marine Association, Inc.: Founded in 1965, the National Montford Point Marine Association is a nonprofit veteran organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of the original Montford Point Marines. Through education, outreach, and advocacy, the Association ensures that the sacrifices and triumphs of these Marines are never forgotten. It was definitely worth the wait. The highly-anticipated romantic comedy Worth The Wait opened in more than 30 cinemas nationwide over the weekend, and we were first in line, with popcorn barrels in hand. Aptly timed with the Merdeka month celebrations, the heartfelt film, which was partly shot in Malaysia, has already won over American viewers on Fox's streaming channel Tubi. The four-story plot feature film is applauded for its emotional depth, and universal themes of love, hope and redemption. The star-studded all-Asian cast includes Ross Butler (13 Reasons Why), Lana Condor (To All The Boys I've Loved Before Franchise), Andrew Koji (Black Doves), Sung Kang (Fast and The Furious Franchise), Elodie Yung (The Cleaning Lady), Karena Ka-Yan Lam (multiple Golden Horse Award winning Hong Kong and Taiwan actress in her U.S. and English language debut), Osric Chau (Supernatural), Kheng Hua Tan (Crazy Rich Asians), and Yu-Beng Lim (Rebel Moon). Meanwhile, acclaimed Taiwanese director, Tom Shu-Yu Lin – the eight-time Golden Horse nominee – makes his English-language debut with Worth The Wait. With at least 10 scenes filmed in Malaysia, the 1 hour 42 minute family-friendly movie highlights Malaysia's natural beauty, vibrant local heritage, food and warm hospitality. Rachel Tan, former Miss Malaysia and producer of the film said, 'Worth The Wait is not just entertainment, but also a reflection on love, faith and hope,' adding that the film is loosely based on her personal love story which blossomed through a long distance relationship between Malaysia and the United States. 'Dan and I wanted to create something that celebrates our Asian identity while also speaking to audiences around the world – and the response so far has been incredibly encouraging.' Dan Mark, one of the film's producers said, 'We encourage Malaysian audiences to come out to support the film which contributes towards putting the country on the world stage as a destination of choice for film makers.' Worth The Wait has earned praise from audiences and critics for its authentic narratives, heart-warming scenes and cross-cultural representation. In addition to the U.S., the film will also be released in Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United Kingdom, the Middle East and Taiwan. It is distributed in Malaysia by Astro Shaw. Taylor Swift announces 12th studio album The Life of a Showgirl

US popstar Taylor Swift announced her 12th album, titled The Life of a Showgirl, for 'pre pre-order' just after midnight Tuesday in posts on her website. Her official website displayed blurred images of a record, CD and cassette tape overlaid with a glittery orange lock, explaining the album artwork would be 'revealed at a later date'. A disclaimer also notes that the release date has not yet been announced, and the album will ship before Oct 13. 'So I wanted to show you something,' the singer says in a video clip posted to her Instagram as she holds up a vinyl album, its cover completely blurred. 'This is my brand new album The Life of a Show Girl,' she says in the clip from the New Heights podcast, hosted by her boyfriend, American football player Travis Kelce, and his brother, ex-NFL player Jason Kelce. The Life of a Showgirl is the follow-up to Swift's last studio album The Tortured Poets Department, which was released last year and sold 1.4 million copies the first day. Since 2021, she has been making good on her vow to re-record her first six studio records in a bid to own the rights to them. This move has actively devalued her album masters as Swifties (Swift's fandom name) only streamed and bought Taylor Versions – thus increasing value of the re-recorded albums. Then in May this year, the 14-time Grammy Award winner, who was locked in a feud with record executives since 2019 over the ownership of her music, shared she had bought back the rights to her entire back catalog for an undisclosed sum. The 35-year-old songwriting sensation has also shattered records with her nearly two-year-long Eras tour that ended last year. It raked in $2 billion over 149 shows around the world, making it the most lucrative tour in music history.
