Toni Kroos Receives 'State Order of Merit' As Greifswald Is Renamed 'Krooswald'
German football legend Toni Kroos received a 'State Order of Merit' in his hometown Greifswald, temporarily renamed 'Krooswald'.
German football legend Toni Kroos received a 'State Order of Merit' in his hometown Greifswald on Friday. Temporarily, the town's name was changed to 'Krooswald', with signs placed at its entrances.
According to a report from Sport1, cited by Goal.com, the ceremony took place at Volksstadion, where the now-retired 35-year-old began his youth career at the age of seven with Greifswalder FC.
Kroos retired from professional football following the Euro Championships 2024 last year, where Germany lost to eventual champions Spain in the quarterfinals. He achieved his sixth UEFA Champions League and fourth La Liga title with Real Madrid in the 2023-24 season.
Overall, Kroos won 34 major trophies in his football career and earned 114 caps for Germany. He played a crucial role in Germany's 2014 FIFA World Cup-winning team, scoring two goals.
The event was attended by his family, locals, and officials, with Minister-President Manuela Schwesig highlighting Kroos's foundation work supporting needy children and families across Germany.
Kroos made 463 appearances for Real Madrid, and his retirement last year surprised many. Although his professional career has ended, Kroos participated in the Icon League, a five-a-side tournament featuring retired players. He is expected to remain connected with football through roles in media, coaching, or as an ambassador.
Toni Kroos began his senior career at Bayern Munich, making his debut at 17 in 2007. After limited appearances, he was loaned to Bayer Leverkusen, where he impressed before returning to Bayern in 2010. At Bayern, he won three Bundesliga titles, a UEFA Champions League, two DFB-Pokal trophies, and earned three Bundesliga Team of the Season selections. In 2014, Kroos transferred to Real Madrid for €25 million.
At Real Madrid, he achieved significant success, winning 22 trophies, including four La Liga and five Champions League titles, with three consecutive European triumphs from 2016 to 2018. He was frequently included in elite teams such as the FIFA FIFPRO World 11 and UEFA Team of the Year.
Internationally, Kroos earned 114 caps for Germany, winning the 2014 World Cup and being named to multiple tournament best XI lists. A standout youth player, he retired in 2024, leaving a legacy as one of Germany's greatest midfielders.

US Open Draw Sets Up Possible Alcaraz-Djokovic Showdown
Last Updated: Carlos Alcaraz may face Novak Djokovic in the US Open semi-finals, with Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka leading the singles draws. Carlos Alcaraz was set up for a potential US Open clash with Novak Djokovic on Thursday as the draw for the men's and women's singles tournaments was unveiled. Spanish sensation Alcaraz faces a challenging path to the final, where he might face world number one Jannik Sinner at Flushing Meadows. Alcaraz could dethrone Sinner as the world number one depending on his performance in New York over the next two weeks, starting on Sunday. The Spaniard will commence his campaign against American Reilly Opelka, known for his powerful serve, in the first round. If the tournament proceeds according to seedings, the 2022 US Open champion will encounter former world number one Djokovic in the semi-finals. Djokovic, aiming for a record 25th Grand Slam title, will start his quest against Learner Tien in the first round. Seventh seed Djokovic leads Alcaraz 5-3 in previous encounters and defeated the Spaniard in four sets during the quarter-finals of the Australian Open earlier this year. However, the 38-year-old Serbian's form remains uncertain heading into the final Grand Slam of the year as he has not played since reaching the semi-finals at Wimbledon last month. The 24-year-old Italian, who retired during the first set of his Cincinnati Open final against Alcaraz earlier this week, could face Britain's Jack Draper in the quarter-finals. In the women's singles draw, world number one and defending champion Aryna Sabalenka will start her campaign against Switzerland's Rebeka Masarova, ranked 109th in the world. Second seed Iga Swiatek, the reigning Wimbledon champion and 2022 US Open winner, is in the opposite side of the draw and begins her quest for a seventh Grand Slam singles title against Colombia's Emiliana Arango. Swiatek's potential path to the final might see her face 2023 US Open champion Coco Gauff in the semi-finals. Gauff will meet Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round. Elsewhere, Venus Williams faces a tough challenge if she aims to extend what could be her farewell US Open appearance beyond the first round. The 45-year-old US tennis icon received a wild card entry into the first round of the tournament, 28 years after reaching her first US Open final as a 17-year-old in 1997. Williams will take on Czech 11th seed Karolina Muchova in the first round. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Rahul Dravid Names Australian Great As The Toughest Bowler He Faced
Last Updated: Dravid played 164 Tests, 344 ODIs and 1 T20I during his 16-year-long international career from 1996 to 2012. Rahul Dravid played 164 Tests, 344 ODIs and one T20I during his 16-year-long international career from 1996 to 2012 and scored more than 24,000 runs. During his playing days, Dravid faced many great bowlers like Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee, Muttiah Muralitharan, Shaun Pollock, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akhtar, Chaminda Vaas, Courtney Walsh, James Anderson, Stuart Board and Makhaya Ntini, among others, and enjoyed many tough battles. But during a recent appearance on Kutti Stories with Ash, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin asked him to name the toughest bowler he faced; he mentioned two names, one of which was Australian great McGrath and the other was Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan. 'As a fast bowler, it had to be Glenn McGrath. I thought McGrath was… I kind of played Wasim (Akram) and Waqar (Younis) at the back end of their careers. So it's not kind of fair… People who played Wasim earlier say that he was in a different league, and I could imagine after seeing the videos, I can imagine… And even bowling at the back end of his career, he was damn good. But I played McGrath at his peak. He was a phenomenal bowler. He challenged my off stump more than anyone ever did. Just being able to go close to the stumps, get the bounce and just the level of fitness… He was able to come at you right through the whole day. I have played faster bowlers than him, but in terms of consistency and skill, he must be the toughest bowler I've faced," Dravid said. 'As a spinner, Muralitharan was the best bowler that I played against. Great skill. He had the ability to spin the ball both ways. Especially when he came round the wicket and got the doosra away from you. So, he was someone who was never tired and bowled really long spells. He kept at you and kept at you… and he is just a phenomenal spinner," he added. McGrath played 124 Tests and 250 ODIs for Australia from 1993 to 2007 and dismissed 563 and 381 batters, respectively. He is the most successful Australian pacer in Test cricket and also holds the record for taking the most wickets in ODIs for the six-time champions. On the other hand, Muralitharan dismissed 800 batters in Tests, 534 in ODIs and 13 in T20Is. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
