Zahid: Mara will adopt girl who lost family in Sg Korok tragedy
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government, through Mara, would ensure Putri Qisya Nur Izzat Mohamad Azim Izat's welfare.
Her parents and four siblings died after the family car plunged into Sungai Korok. Their bodies were retrieved yesterday.
"I advised her to be a pious girl as the prayers of a pious child for their parents are always accepted.
"I encouraged her to recite Surah Al-Fatihah and Yasin often for her late parents and siblings," Zahid said after visiting the girl and her extended family in Jerlun today.
He said arrangements have been made for the girl to attend Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) next year.
"I told her to study hard and get good grades. Insya-Allah, MRSM is waiting.
"She has agreed and so have her grandparents, Insya-Allah. We will make every effort to ensure she gets the opportunities and support she needs."
He said Mara would ensure her welfare and academic future are taken care of.
On safety concerns at the site of the tragedy, Zahid, who is rural and regional development minister, said his ministry would consider installing guardrails and streetlights along the dark stretch of road there and nearby.
He said he would bring the matter to the attention of relevant parties to expedite action.
Six members of a family were reported missing on Saturday.
The bodies of Mohamad Azim Izat Ishak, 32, his wife Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, 31, and their four children, Putra Rayyan Nur, 9, Hawa Adriana Nur, 8, Annayla Humaira Nur, 7, and six-month-old Tuah Haydar, were found inside a Proton Iswara that sank in Sungai Korok.
Initial investigations suggest the vehicle might have skidded off the road and into the river while the family was on the way home to Jerlun from a relative's house in Taman Seri Aman, Jitra.

Keep legal, political issues separate to safeguard unity government, says Zahid
PASIR SALAK: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has advised all political leaders to distinguish between legal and political matters to preserve harmony within the unity government. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno president, said that legal action must be taken in cases of law violations, while political disputes should be resolved through proper political channels. "We do not want any incident to force a political decision to be made, as this could shake the unity among the 18 parties in the Madani Government. In my view, we must separate legal matters from political matters," he told reporters here on Sunday (Aug 17). He said this after officiating the 'Program Santunan Desa' organised by the Community Development Department (Kemas) in Perak, in collaboration with Village Development and Security Committees and Kemas communities here on Sunday. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, further urged all quarters to respect party decisions to maintain tolerance among component parties. "Do not sensationalise an issue or try to become the most popular figure, only to end up damaging good relations between party leaders and at the grassroots level," he added. – Bernama

Arrest of military officers over smuggling racket tarnishes country's image, says Zahid
PASIR SALAK: The security of the country remains intact despite the recent arrest of five military officers for their suspected involvement in a smuggling racket, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said. The arrest of the five officers from the Malaysian Defence Intelligence Organisation (MDIO), Zahid said, although damaging the nation's image, should serve as a strong warning to all enforcement agencies to avoid such misconduct. " It (security) is not compromised, but the (country's) image has been tarnished. "This must be avoided and fully understood by them," Zahid said in his speech after launching the Santunan Desa programme here today. Present were Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Rubiah Wang and Community Development Department (KEMAS) Director-General Datuk Mohd Hanafiah Man. Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, said he supported the action taken against the suspects as announced by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin. "It is not just about being an informant but being directly involved. If this is indeed the case, it must be stopped because it concerns the image of the armed forces. "More so for those of us in positions of trust, we must act responsibly and not use rank, position, or authority in a defence or security force to engage in unlawful activities," he said. It was reported that the five military officers and five civilians were recently arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) during an operation to dismantle a drug and contraband smuggling syndicate involving senior armed forces officers in the southern region.

PASIR SALAK, Aug 17 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has reminded defence and security forces personnel not to misuse their rank or position to commit unlawful acts. Ahmad Zahid said he supported Chief of Defence Force Gen Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar's stand that there would be no compromise in dealing with abuse of power. 'I agree with his statement that firm action will be taken against collusion involving military officers, not only as informants but also when directly involved,' he told reporters after officiating the Perak Community Development Department (Kemas) Santunan Desa Programme here today. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, said abuse of power must be stopped as it could tarnish the image of the country's defence and security forces. Last Wednesday, Bernama reported that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission had crippled a southern smuggling syndicate with the arrest of 10 people, including three serving and two former senior military officers.
